I wanted to review this product for those who were mainly concerned about the amount of power this amazing electric heater draws. Another reviewer stated use of this product blew fuses in his abode repetitively; I too can confirm that behaviour... and you'll soon understand why.

The unit itself is sturdy and quiet. Oscillation is smooth, and the fan (whether being used to blow heated or non-heated air) emits a "whooshing" noise rather than a whine. The fan makes an acceptable level of background noise (I was able to sleep without any problems, and found it relaxing). The unit has 3 modes of operation, controlled by a dial: fan only (no heater), fan and heater (level 1), and fan and heater (level 2). Oscillation is controlled via a separate button, as is temperature controlled via a separate dial. The amount of heat this unit can put out -despite being adjustable -is excellent. The power cord has a 2-prong connector.

But as previously mentioned, the power draw is downright unreasonable. The specifications claim a maximum of 1500W, but the unit absolutely will draw a lot more than that at times. Below are the readings (using a Kill-a-Watt metre, measuring amperage and wattage at 120V) and what features/adjustments were set to. This will surely shock many readers.

Fan only operation: 0.20 to 0.25 amps, 14 to 17 watts

Fan and heater (level 1): 7.4 to 8.0 amps, 750 to 830 watts

Fan and heater (level 2): 14.3 to 14.75 amps, 1450 to 1610 watts

Oscillation added approximately 0.02 amps and an additional 3 watts no matter what mode the unit was set to.

These numbers are accurate, and "double confirmed" by blowing fuses in my apartment numerous times. I even lost a generic (low-grade) power strip as a result. Readers should be aware that in most homes, a single power circuit (not outlet!) is usually 15 amps, so the chance of a fuse blowing as a result of this unit being used is quite high assuming other electronics (computers, etc.) are on the same circuit.

Furthermore, when considering the wattage drawn, think for a moment of your electric bill.

If your home has numerous dedicated 15 or 20 amp circuits, this product is definitely for you and will keep you extremely warm. If you rent an older flat like I do, expect there to be limited/shared circuits with 15 amps maximum, which means you should probably be looking for a unit that draws less power. Yes, you could run the unit at "level 1", but it's significantly warmer and more effective at "level 2".

I'm giving this product 3/5 stars given its decent build quality, silent operation, and effectiveness (I would give it 3.5 if Amazon supported half-star ratings). I'm docking stars due to the absurd power requirements given that most US abodes use 15 amp circuits, with newer homes using 20 amp.

I really like this heater. Got one for Christmas, to replace my office space heater which had just burnt out;however, my office doesn't open until after New Years Day, so we used it at the house, as the weather turned cold. It worked WONDERFULLY, better than I expected! And the oscillating feature is a MUST what I used to hate about my old heater was that it always projected heat in the same, small area and I was forever moving it around to avoid getting one spot too hot this heater doesn't have that problem. It works great!

Rec'd product promptly and in good condition. It's the perfect size for my bedroom, with a slim profile and hi-tech look. Tested the heater on a cold night and it warmed up my room in no time. The fan was quiet and the oscillating tower was good at spreading the heat around. Overall, a good little heater for the price!

Honest reviews on Lasko 5367 Oscillating Ceramic Tower Heater

I purchased two of these heaters this winter. They have worked great. They may not be 100% silent, but they are about as quiet as you can get for a space heater with a fan. I use one on the low setting in my two stall detached garage to keep it at about 45 degrees. I use the other in a 21' x 11' room in the house. It easily and quickly warms this room. I only have a couple of little complaints. The oscillating feature is nice for heat distribution, but the arc range that it sweeps could be greater. Also, it doesn't have tip over safety protection. It only has overheat protection. These cons are not enough to drop it from 5 to 4 stars, though.

I have tried a couple of different space heaters over the years. I had some digital resistive element Vornados. They heated the room and moved the air nice, but they all just up and died. Too bad too, because they were not cheap. I had a digital Holmes that worked like and had all the same features as the Vornados, but it too died. I have a Pelonis Safe-T ceramic heater. It still functions and puts out good heat, but it is pretty loud. When it comes to space heaters, what I have concluded is that digitally controlled heaters are not reliable. I think the circuitry just can't handle the elevated case temperatures. Since I haven't had the Laskos very long, I can't speak for their durability, but I think the manual thermostat will mean longer life. Overall, these Lasko heaters do it all at a good price. And, I won't feel as sick if they fail as I did with the Vornados.

This is my 2nd Lasko 5367 after trying several lower cost space heaters that all broke. My first one held up for 3 & 1/2 years in near constant 'on-high' and just gave out earlier in this year.

The size is great, reaching close enough to the floor to keep your feet warm. The oscillating button on top w/ the controls make adjusting the temperature easy to reach.

The fan feature is great for cooling down a room and takes about a minute to feel the cooler temp if you've been running it on the heating settings.

Easily warms up a small to med size chilly room very quickly and is very quiet.

I would suggest using this product with a grounding outlet on a different fuse from any high power electronic because it packs a lot of power for its size.

There are ventilation slots on the back that are easy to clean but, I don't recommend using it in a bathroom, unless you remove it before running a shower to protect it from steam.

Obviously, you should keep children and pets away from it, but at the same time, it's a rather no-worry, very solid and extremely difficult to tip over product with a heat overload protection built in.

I just got my new one and if it holds up like my 1st, I can't think of a thing that makes this product not worth the price, especially w/a 3-yr manufacturer's warranty.

Best Air Vent Filters 1 Pack of 12- 4x12 (Register Vent Filters) Deals

Air Vent Filters 1 Pack of 12- 4x12 - by Nordic Pure

We have a forced air heating system which makes for a dusty home. I purchased these vent filters in hopes they would reduce the dust flying around and settling on furniture. We installed them a month ago and I really notice the difference in the amount of dust on shelves, dressers, etc. Before the filters I needed to dust every day (which I couldn't do) to keep stuff from looking dusty. Now I can do a normal once a week dusting and even then there's not much dust. These filters work.

We recently had a new baby so I wanted to find something that would filter any lingering dust in the vents in the house. My husband was really skeptical, but after a little persuasion (aka nagging) he put them in the registers. The first thing we noticed is that it decreases the amount of heat coming into the room so we had to adjust the thermostat to maintain the 72 degrees we're used to. After three months my husband went to change the filters as well as the furnace filter and was no longer a skeptic. It was amazing how much dust these filters had trapped. We now change these every three months and every one breathes a little better without the extra dust lingering in the air. I highly recommend this product especially to anyone who is waking up a little congested as it defintely helps!

Exactly what I wanted and the advertisement is exact. All you will need is something to secure them to any vent or where ever you will be using them. I haven't had to rinse them yet but it is doing its job. My daughter is not having her allergy attacks anymore so I am loving this

Honest reviews on Air Vent Filters 1 Pack of 12- 4x12 (Register Vent Filters)

Just another way to add protection. Also great for renters. Moving into a new place usually the maintenance crew doesnt care about the place since they dont own it. They let all sort of junk fall into the vents. Then you move in and the air is push up right through all the junk. I say a must have for clean living.

I got the product very quickly. They fit well in the vents after a little bit of trimming (just off the end), have one in every vent in the house.

I've had mine about a week. Initial impressions so far are all very positive! This model is yet another 1500 watt ceramic heater and there is no shortage of them from several makers. Initially I set out to buy one of those fake portable fireplaces or wood-stoves with the visible fake fire inside. Reading all the specs and user reviews I could find on every one of those fireplaces and stoves it seems the maximum heat they put out is exactly the same as this far more compact and much less costly Lasko heater. About 1,500 watt power consumption and approximately 5,100 BTU heat output is the most you'll find in a portable room heater for home use. I settled on the ceramic type because of the rapid heating since I am only going to run it when I'm in the area where it is located. Ultimately since I only need an auxiliary heater a few months out of the year I decided that I really didn't want a fake fireplace or wood stove collecting dust the other 8 months of the year when I didn't actually need to use it. The Lasko is very compact stowing under the bed out of the way when not needed and is easily portable with a built in recess to use as a carry handle in the top back of the unit. I also read reviews about how the fans in some of the portable fireplaces/wood stoves were very noisy which next sent me looking for a very quiet ceramic heater. The word QUIET kept coming up in reviews of this Lasko heater and mine in fact makes hardly any sound at all! You do hear a low hum but that is all the sound mine has made so far and it does not interfere with TV or music enjoyment. The cable is 6 feet long.

I compared numerous brands of ceramic heaters with built in fans including Bionaire, Sunbeam, Honeywell and others. The Lasko warranty is 3 years which is the second longest warranty out there as the Bionaire has a 5 year warranty. The Lasko oscillates, it is very compact and is stylish looking more like a stereo speaker than a room heater. I also own a Lasko high velocity utility fan that continues to serve me well. Collectively those were the deciding factors in choosing the Lasko brand. Bionaire makes a good product as evidenced by their longer warranty, but their user reviews were not as strong regarding reliability on similarly priced Bionaire models.

The Lasko oscillation function was difficult to visualize before plugging it in, but how it works is that the entire unit except the small black base pivots silently left to right then right to left in a travel arc of about 45 degrees when you press the silver OSCILLATION bar on the control panel. Press the oscillation bar again and it stops moving immediately wherever it is at that moment. Now that I've used it the oscillation does actually seem to speed warming of the entire room and is a worthwhile feature I would definitely want again.

After looking for a space heater with a UL Seal I could not find one! I also looked for a heater made in the USA or at least North America and could not find one of those either. While made in China like the others and there is no UL seal, this one seems well made, sturdy and works perfectly. This heater is not easily knocked over, has an overheating safety shutdown, and is safe around pets or small children as it only gets warm to the touch. It has a red LED power light that is always on when the unit is plugged in whether turned on or not.

I would not hesitate recommending this Lasko portable ceramic room heater to a friend but encourage you to shop around as your needs might be different from mine. For example, an oil filler radiator type heater makes more sense if you plan to run it about all the time. If you need quick heat in a small to medium sized room for a few hours per day then a ceramic is probably better for your needs than the oil filled radiator type you run about all the time.

There are 4 settings on the operation switch which are OFF, Fan Only, 1 for Low Heat and 2 for High Heat. On high heat it consumes 1,500 watts, on low heat about 900 watts. The fan is always on when the heater is actually heating and cycles off when the thermostat turns off the heating element. The fan only has one speed but it is adequate enough to double as a small personal fan in hot weather making this unit more versatile than I expected when I bought it. The "fan only" feature may keep it out from under the bed in the summer but it won't replace the high velocity Lasko utility fan I own that moves a ton of air.

This unit's thermostat is easy to use. Once the room is at the temperature you like, slowly rotate the thermostat left until the unit cycles off and it will then cycle on and off to maintain a comfort level that is in the same ballpark.

I have turned down the thermostat on the main heat to 60 degrees and using this unit for the small area where I spend most of my awake time to make it more comfortable. Hopefully it will save money by not heating the entire place to 70 degrees. All on it's own it will heat up about 150 Sq Ft. to 70 degrees on high setting in 30 to 60 minutes, then cut it to low and it will maintain room comfort indefinitely. If you use a 15,000 BTU AC unit to cool an area, you can not reasonably expect one 5,100 BTU portable heater alone to heat the same area unaided, because you probably would need three of these units. When using in an area much larger than about 150 sq. ft. you may find you have to run it on high all the time to get much benefit. In order to get the maximum economy a space heater like this should be ran on high for about an hour at the most to warm up the room then reduced to low to maintain the temperature. If you find it is running on high all the time without warming the room enough so that you can turn it down or have the thermostat cycle off then you probably need to add a second or even a third one. The 150 Sq. Ft. rule seems to apply to all these 1,500 watt room heaters. This unit is not intended to heat an entire home, floor or even apartment unaided. Think of this as a whole-room heater, not a whole-house heater.

There is no remote control or digital thermostat control on this unit, but those features add a substantial amount to the price and I don't mind manually setting the thermostat. Other Lasko models are available with those extra features if you need them. I only use it when I'm up and around so I don't mind turning it on and off, changing the power setting or setting the thermostat manually. The last thing I need is yet another remote control to buy batteries for and lose in the sofa cushions.

So far as operational cost in concerned, it is easy to calculate based on your cost per kilowatt Hour for power. On high any 1500 watt heater like this one uses 1.5 KW per hour when actually heating. Here I pay 13.9 cents per KWH so it costs me about 21 cents per hour when heating on high setting in constant use. On low setting when heating it uses about 0.9 KW per hour so that costs me about 12.5 cents per hour of constant use. Your cost per KW Hour may be lower or higher so you'll have to do your own math. I run mine on low except for the first 30 minutes or so. If I ran it on high constantly heating for 24 hours it would cost me about $5, on low it would cost me about $3 for 24 hours of constant heating. I only run it about 8 hours per day and mostly that is on low, so the most it will cost is about 30 dollars per month, but that is not counting what I save by cutting down the thermostat on the whole house. The Lasko doesn't run continuously and it cycles on and off maybe running about 60% of the time on an average day here which is about 50 degrees outside for a high temperature and 30 for a low. It should save me some money over heating the entire house to 70 degrees, but I'm not sure exactly how much yet. I do know I am warm in this room and the main heat isn't running nearly as often or running quite as long when it does run.

I was very reluctant to purchase this heater and did so based on the only 3 reviews I could find. I have a basement room in my house that can get pretty chilly during the midwest winters (approx. 20 degrees outside = 55-60 degrees inside).

I thought about the infrared cabinet heaters that have become so popular but didn't have the $175-$300 to pay for one at the time. I have to say, I am extremely impressed with not only the quality of this little heater (the size of a surround sound stereo speaker) but with the effectiveness at heating the room (approximately 400 sq. ft).

Very pleased... I think you will be too.

I have the "designer" version from this maker and wanted another for the bath downstairs so took a chance on this one. It is a different style but basically the same quality. Was not disapointed, it is just as well made and trouble free as the designer one and heats up my bath very nicely. Also it has a nice long electrical cord which makes it easy to place where you need it. I expect to use them both for years to come.

Honest reviews on Lasko 5307 Oscillating Ceramic Tower Heater, 16-Inch

I live in a 40 foot, 1 bedroom trailer. I need a safe way to heat during the winter months. I have 3 tiny dogs and 2 cats inside. It worries me that they would knock papers off of the computer desk, catch fire, and burn the place down! At first I bought one heater and I love it! Very quiet, warms up quickly, no extremely hot surface to catch paper on fire! I liked the first so much I bought a second for the bathroom/bedroom end of the trailer. I can't tell you how awesome these heaters are! For the first time since I have lived here, I have quiet, consistent heat and the front end is as warm as the back end! When the temperature is right, I click the dial and it keeps the room that very temperature! Note: Walmart sells these heaters for $32.97 each.

I have owned other Lasko heaters in the past and I always find them to be better than other brands out there such as Honeywell, Delongi etc. This little heater warms my 400 sq ft living room to a very comfortable temperature. I only normally keep it set to low and never need high except on the coldest of days in which I will turn it to high for about an hour and then down to low the rest of the day. I highly recommend this heater, it get's the job done!

2 1/2 Year Update (as of 3/2013): We've been using this kettle at least twice a day and it works and looks like new. The only maintenance we do is every six months heat up a one-to-one mix of water and vinegar to clean any build-up. Now, back to the original review...

There are lots of pluses... The double insulation keeps the outside less than dangerously hot. It also means the water will heat up a tiny bit faster and stays hot a lot longer than uninsulated kettles.

The water almost never touches plastic; an important consideration to some. The underside of the lid is plastic and so is the frame around the scale filter. Still, the contact is minimal. The tall, thin design means it take up less counter space than other models.

The surprising (to me anyway) "minus" is that when you take this pot off its base the switch stays in the on position. All the other cordless electric kettles I've used shut off when you lift them up. The result is that the only two ways to turn this off are to remember to flip the switch or count on the kettle to turn itself off when the remaining water boils or the pot runs dry. It's not a big deal but for the price Hamilton Beach could have included an interlock (like they do on other kettles they make).

BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. I've always appreciated the help I've gotten from other reviewers and continue to return the favor as best as I can. If you thought this review was helpful please let me know by clicking on "Yes" button where it asks. If there was anything you thought was lacking or unclear leave a comment and I'll do what I can to fix it.

Most importantly, my wife loves it, and she is a gadget-phobe. I just bought a second one for my mother.

We have been using it for two months now, and no problems so far.

After my usual exhaustive search, I selected this tea kettle because it had the best combination of features.

PRO:

All metal: stainless steel liner and no exposed heating element to accumulate scale buildup. The lid is plastic but it doesn't come into contact with the water. I really didn't like the idea of boiling water in contact with plastic.

Cool touch exterior for safety and also it insulates the water inside, keeping it hotter after the kettle shuts off upon boiling.

Nice balance for the handle I find the electric kettles with the handle on the top to be much more difficult to lift and pour. This one has the handle on the side much better.

Wide mouth top is easy to fill and clean. The lid pivots in the middle too hard to describe so I added a clip from the user manual. Easy to remove lid to clean, though as others mentioned it does get in the way a bit when you're filling the kettle.

As with many other kettles, it is cordless -the kettle lifts easily off and on from the corded base, and you can hide any extra power cord inside the base.

CON (none of these matter to me or my wife):

No water level indication, but then if there were you would probably have connections that could leak over time and potentially plastic parts in contact with water.

Water temperature is not adjustable.

I've had the Hamilton Beach Cool Touch Tea Kettle for two years and I've had no problems with it. I love it for the following features:

Pros

----

Stainless Steel

The most important reason I got this kettle is that its interior is made of stainless steel, not plastic. Boiling water in plastic just doesn't sit well with me what with the talk about the health hazards from harmful chemicals (e.g. BPA, DEHA) in plastic leaching into food and drinks.

Seamless Metal

Inside and out, I simply can't find a a metal seam the kettle is a one-piece stainless steel construction and have absolutely no joints where pieces of stainless steel are welded together. There is, therefore, no need to worry about the water being contaminated by lead from solder.

Quick Boil

It boils 40 oz of water, the maximum capacity, in 4 minutes. (I actually timed it. Boil times will of course vary depending on altitude and the initial temperature of the water.)

"Cool" Touch

When boiling water in the kettle, the exterior of the kettle is warm, not hot, so you don't risk getting burned.

Wide Opening

The wide opening makes it easy to fill it with water and to clean.

Easy Plug In and Plug Out

To "plug in" the kettle to the power supply, simply sit the kettle on the base unit. Similarly, simply lift the kettle to "unplug" it. It's a one-handed operation, and there's no cords or plugs to mess with.

Spring-Loaded Lid

The spring-loaded lid flips open with the press of a button on the handle. The lid can also be easily detached by pressing a button on it to release a catch.

Auto Shutoff

When the water starts to boil, the power button pops up, the green LED indicator turns off, and the kettle automatically shuts off. There is also an audible "click" as the power button pops up.

Looks

The kettle looks attractive with its simple curves and brushed stainless steel finish.

As for Cons, there's just one for me:

Con

---

Hard-To-See "Max" Water Fill Mark

The interior has a "Max" mark to indicate the maximum water level but it's not easy to see it. Work-around: The lid is hinged in the middle, so when it is flipped open, the bottom half of extends below the rim of the kettle. It so happens that the bottom of the lid lines up with the "Max" mark, so you can use the lid as a marker for gauging when the water level reaches the mark.

Conclusion

----------

The Hamilton Beach Cool Touch Tea Kettle is attractive, easy to use, and boils water quickly. I don't think you can go wrong with this one.

[Update June 9, 2011]

I'm really pleased with how durable this product is -I've been using this electric kettle for well over 4 years now, and I've had no problems with it. I hope to enjoy using it for many more years to come!

Honest reviews on Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch 8-Cup Cordless Electric Kettle

I bought this kettle a month or so ago. I agree with other reviewers that it's a well built appliance that boils quickly and doesn't impart any taste to the water (that I can detect). I chose it because of it's steel container, having read too much about chemicals leaching out of plastics. But it won't pour! The darned thing must have been designed by an industrial artist to look cool, and I bet they didn't build a prototype and check it out before launching into production. I've tried everything to get it to pour cleanly, but it always trickles water back down the outside of the canister and all over the counter or table top. I've tried removing the plastic filter, pouring quickly, slowly, etc, but nothing prevents a pool of hot water that has to be wiped up afterwards. It seems to be inherent in the shape of the lip. The only thing that minimizes(but doesn't prevent) the problem is to open the lid and pour extremely slowly. It's really a major irritation with an otherwise pleasing product.

One of the best features about this kettle is that the all metal interior is seamless! No metal stamped or welded together unlike other stainless steel kettles out there. Guarantees me of no leaking and no grooves to corrode or collect junk. The other great feature is that the entire lid can be removed leaving you the ability to insert your whole hand in to clean the interior. There are no sharp edges either! The flip open lid allows easy filling. I've been searching and researching for a long time, and this was the best $40 spent! My old stove top kettle is out in the recycling bin!

I bought this for a cat bed for an outside feral cat that has adopted me. She sleeps in the garage and I put this in her bed when it gets cold out. It warms up nicely and does get soft when it's warm. I don't think it really stays warm for 12 hours. Usually I check on her around 6:00 in the morning and it's already started to firm up again and is only slightly warm, but that could be from her sleeping on it. That's the only disappointment I have with this product, is that it really doesn't stay warmer longer. However, it is definitely better than that round microwavable disc that I bought last year. The cover is tough and easy to clean. As an inexpensive bed warmer, that doesn't require any electricity, I do recommend it.

I purchased this for our new cat to keep her warm during the winter nights but I don't think it's what I was looking for. It just doesn't hold heat long enough. I warmed it up at about 9:30 pm (it doesn't get squishy, the stuff inside goes form rock hard to liquid, nothing in between)and placed it under a towel that was folded into fourths length-wise in the hope that it would be more comfortable and maybe stay warm and soft a little longer. At 7:00 in the morning it had hardened and I could just barely feel the slightest amount of heat when I put my hand directly on it. The cat loves it when it's warm, I just wish it had lasted longer. It's also not big enough, you'd need two to make a full platform for the cat.

I bought these because I have a feral cat colony. I have used the round hard disk ones for a couple of years and just love them but thought these might be more comfortable.

They do not hold the warmth for more than about 3 hours. The other ones hold it all night. Really a waste of money if you are going to use them for longer periods of heat. I tried heating them for 8 minutes which is double the average time and still they just don't hold the heat for long. I will buy more of the original ones.

After one month they are leaking around the seams. I do not know if that stuff is poison or not but I feel it is not safe. They are going in the garbage and I can't get a refund according to the refund policy.

Honest reviews on K&H Microwavable Pet Bed Warmer, 9-Inch x 9-Inch

I purchased this product about a month ago. Following the instructions, I heated it by minute increments to get the proper amount of time to get it squishy and warm. On my microwave it was 8 minutes. It feels like a liquid gel on the inside. There is a slight plastic smell on it but it goes away after a few days.

I bought two, one for each of my cats. One really is too small for a normal sized cat to lay on, maybe just one half of their body. At first my cats were hesitant because of the water sloshing sound and the smell of it but now they are used to it. My cats sleep with me, so I just tucked it under the comforter where they laid by my feet and they snuggled up on it. Like other reviewers have noted, it doesn't retain heat for 12 hours as advertised. In fact, it starts to cool within two hours and hardens into a brick by morning. I swear you can whack someone with it, how hard it is, haha. Anywho, it was a decent enough product in my eyes, until it started leaking. I'm not talking burst open and flooded out the contents or anything, but a slow ooze that shows up as a ring around the edges. At first I thought maybe I put it on a wet plate in the microwave, but not true since it didn't feel damp. I changed the bed sheets a couple of times and each time I noticed a greasy square shaped stain from where the warmer was. Gross. Luckily it seems to wash out in the laundry, but stillI paid over $50 for the two of them and shouldn't have to deal with a greasy heating pad. Too bad I just missed the return deadline. :(

I purchased this for our adopted feral at my office. Even though we are in Florida it has been really cold, so I thought this would be perfect for her outdoor shelter. So glad I tested it first. Followed the instructions and it only stayed warm for 2-3 hours, tested it again same result. BTY, I tested it indoors, so outside it would not have stayed warm even that long.

I purchased this product at Christmas and my husband and I have enjoyed it very much so far. It throws off just enough extra heat to keep our living room warm so that we don't have to turn up our electric heat during these cold nights. I also love the ambiance it creates. I am very happy with the product so far.

Great Little Fireplace. We love the look of the warm fire through the glass. It can be used just to look at the fire light or with the heater feature on. We use ours year round-even in the summer evenings with the heat feature off.

I ordered this faux fireplace heater for my son's room. The reviews were solid, and the heating system was fire safe.

However, they fail to mention that the "oak finish" is cheap veneer, not oak.

And NO ONE mentioned anywhere in the advertisement here that the unit arrives UNASSEMBLED!!!!

I am concerned because the unit I bought two years ago from AMAZON was solid oak (not a cheap finish), and it came fully assembled.

I cannot yet comment on the heater itself, but I did want to warn prospective buyers that the quality of "oak finish" has been downgraded without clarification or any change in the language.

I will add an update in a few days after we have had a chance to use it.

***********************************************************************************

I have now had a chance to assemble the device, and to use it in my son's room for more than a week of cool weather.

First, the assembly is not easy. There are 80 pieces in the box, mainly screws (55 main screws, + 3 smaller ones), so be prepared to dedicate at least an hour to the work.

I was not impressed with the durability of the heater once constructed. It is heavy, and it is not designed for major relocations once it is constructed.

On the other hand, and despite the faux oak finish, it really is a beautiful addition to my son's room. He LOVES it--and uses the false flame as a night light to hypnotize him to sleep. It is quite nice to sit in a darkened room and stair at the "fire." The heater and thermostat also work well. My ten-year-old was able to operate the controls out of the box. Another plus.

As a result, I have raised the review from 2 stars to 4 stars. I still take off some credit for the faux finish, the lack of warning about assembly required. But the product does overall deliver the quality you hope and expect.

This unit is very sturdy and beautiful... but you better be prepared to turn up the television! The heater is quite loud. I owned another brand unit for years it was not nearly as loud. I am keeping it because it is so attractive.

If you can figure out the thermostat dial for the automatic shut-on/shut-off, this product can make the affected room two degrees cooler (although it remains two degrees warmer than the rest of the house). Initially we got it figured out and were pleased, then it got knocked out of whack and took some tinkering to get it set properly again. Now it seems to be working its two-degree magic again. The key is to get it set so that it sucks in the cool air when the A/C is running, but does not suck in the warm air after the A/C stops running.

As for noise, it really is not bad. Even on the High setting, it probably is less noisy than the oscillating fan we already use.

Finally, it's not as ugly as I thought it would be, but it has a VERY bright blue light on it that you may want to cover with tape.

First and foremost, I want everyone to understand that this is NOT an air conditioner or furnace, nor does it create colder or warmer air. All it does (and claims to do) is move a little more air out of a weak register. Another thing...do NOT expect this unit to be as quiet as your old register. Your old register didn't have 2 fans running...this register will. Anyone expecting to spend $35 and solve an entire room's HVAC problems has extremely unrealistic expectations.

That said, this unit has worked decently for my HVAC needs. I live in a 3-level condo, where the bottom floor will normally have a 10-degree difference from the top. Unfortunately, the top floor happens to be the bedroom, the one room that temperature actually matters. Rather than do some extensive modifications to the house, I figured I'd give this unit a shot.

It's a pretty cut and dry operation, with an on, off, auto-heat and auto-cool setting. The latter 3 settings all have low-medium-high fan settings. From the way some people were talking, I was expecting this thing to possibly sound like a box fan, though I was relieved to find it to be much quieter than that. It was, however, still noticeable when it was on. Airflow was maybe 50% better than without, although it didn't quite seem as powerful as I was hoping. I'm almost positive that these fans are almost interchangeable parts with a computer CPU fan. The Auto Heat/Cool functions are nice, but take a good amount of tweaking before you get them in the right place. Be prepared to have to make at least 3-4 adjustments, minimum.

After doing some other research, I found that many people have come up with an answer to the semi-noisy fans, and I figured that I would try it myself. If you turn the register over and cut the air grates off the backside, it will make a drastic improvement on noise. (See attached picture) I would go as far as to say it's a 50-75% improvement of overall noise. People also claimed a 50% improvement on airflow, although I personally found it to be maybe 25% better, if that. I would, however, HIGHLY recommend this modification if your primary complaint about the register is how much noise it makes. One word of caution though...this modification will likely void your warranty, and you will NOT be able to return the item. Choose wisely.

Lastly, I bought this as an open-box item and got it quite a bit less from Smarthome. When it showed up, I couldn't even tell it had been opened. It was probably from someone who didn't care for the noise and was a like-new return. If I were looking to pick up one of these, I would strongly consider an open box item.

Summary:

PROS:

-Works fairly well (4-6 degree difference on 3rd floor home)

-Quiet after modification

-Good value given other expensive options

-Auto Heat/Cool functions

CONS:

-Semi-noisy fans if left unmodded

-Somewhat short cord

-AC adaptor gets pretty warm

-Auto Heat/Cool takes some tweaking

Final Thoughts:

I would definitely recommend this for around $30. If you pay $50, it's getting a little steep. If you're afraid to cut off the rear air grates, you may not care as much for this product, as it yields a drastic difference in the noise level.

This unit is very effective. I have it in a room that is the fartherest from the furnace/air-conditioning. It has made a noteworthy diffrence in the temperature of the room. The fan cycles with the flow of air very nicely and the noise level is not annoying. This unit was a great purcase and has performed better than I expected.

Honest reviews on Suncourt HC500-B Flush Fit Brown Register Booster

I put this in my daughters room upstairs which typically reads about 5 degrees cooler in the winter than the rest of the house. On the low setting this really didn't make a difference, temp difference was less than 1 degree. When I put it on the medium fan setting though we were able to feel a difference it seemed. According to our portable thermostat the room was reading about 2-3 degrees hotter than it was before. I was really impressed it delivered that much, seeing how it doesn't create the heat, it just tries to pull it through the vent. Plus in a 2 story home, the upstairs typically is always colder anyways.

The only down side to this unit is the fan noise. If they put in quieter fans in this this would be awesome. Other than that, really I can't imagine anyone would use this higher than the medium fan speed because medium is not quite at all and high is just too loud for my comfort.

I bought this item on May 4, 2010 to pull some extra air into a small bedroom without a return vent. It definitely improved the situation, particularly when used on the high setting with the door open. Unfortunately, the high setting is also rather loud, much more so than it could be if better parts were used.

The biggest problem, however, is that, today, after two years of use, the unit caught fire. I noticed a burned wire smell coming from somewhere in the house and just made it into the room in time to see it spark and ignite. I yanked the plug out of the wall (which was extremely hot) and covered the fan with a blanket until it went out, leaving a black mark on the carpet. Needless to say, I would not recommend using this unit.

We've used this space heater for a little over a year to heat our girls' bedroom at night. I was really pleased with it the first year, but noticed recently that it never seemed to switch off, even though we would put it at the same temperature setting as we always had. So I tested it in my office during the day, so I could be sure to notice if it ever switch off. I ran it for about 5 hours in my office, and even though the office became quite warm, the heater never kicked off.

It still works well as far as putting out heat and everything, but I would not have purchased it originally if it didn't have a thermostat, which now doesn't seem to be working.
