I ordered this unit thinking it was what I wanted for my upstairs bedroom because I wouldn't have to give up one of the two windows and then could move it to the extra room while sewing. I live in MA and it worked fine the end of June, beginning of July. It cooled the room in no time at all. We then had a cold spell and didn't use it til August when it became brutally humid. I woke up after 2 hours of use and it shut itself down. Found out that the reservoir filled up. I drained it (which isn't easy since the drainage hole is very close to the floor) it turned on by itself and then in 2 more hours did the same thing. I contacted the company.

This is what they said: "Thank you for your purchase of the Whynter SNO ARC-13W portable air conditioner. Can you please put a pan under the drain plug of the air conditioner and remove the drain plug at the back of the unit? Once all water is drained out, the air conditioner should come on automatically.

Please make sure that the exhaust hose is not blocked or bent and able to vent the hot air with moisture to the outside. It is common that the unit is not able to exhaust the moisture collected if your room temperature is low or if the outside is raining or extremely humid. Also, sometimes when you first start running an air conditioner, the self evaporating system may not function in full capacity.

Also, you may want to set up the air conditioner to have continuous drainage by inserting a drain hose to the drain spout if you live in a humid location."

In order to put a pan under it, I had to elevate it on blocks. The pan filled up every three hours so I had to set my alarm to empty the pan.

The company offered a drainage hose but because it doesn't have the capability of pushing out the water, I would have to elevate the unit above the bottom of my window as to put the hose out the window. I contacted them again.

This is what they said: "Thank you for your reply. In order to set up continuous drainage, we recommend to elevate the air conditioner. We can send you a continuous drainage hose which you can connect to the drain plug of the air conditioner. to drain out the moisture continuously."

That defeats the purpose of "portable" so I guess if you live somewhere where it is very humid, this may not be the unit for you.

I've owned and used several portable air conditioners over the years and I'm truly surprised at the speed of innovation over the last several years. Now it has come to a point where portable units have moved beyond your functional clunky beige contraption to something that has been designed to subtly blend into the surroundings. After deciding between this and a Delonghi (yes, I've finally arrived now that I can afford high-end appliances!) I decided to go with the more compact unit that was at a more affordable price point. I've been using this for about a month now and have been completely satisfied with nearly all aspects. One little gripe that I have, is the absence of handles on the side, it definitely is heavy too. It does however churn out very very cold air, look extremely slick and is a snap to use. The remote control has a myriad of functions that I will eventually use one day but for now, I just need the icey relief from a hot spring day.

Great unit, I bought it to cool off the upstairs hallway and bathroom. It actually cools off the whole second floor of my home which keeps the downstairs cooler. Most portables have to be emptied everyday but this unit doesnt need to be emptied for at least a week (I know hard to believe). I like that it has two intakes on both sides and they are easy to clean. It isnt as heavy as my other portable units. I didnt have any problems with shipping. I am really happy with the unit, as a matter of fact, I am buying another one today and throwing out the old one that leaks all over my floor!

Honest reviews on Whynter SNO ECO-FRIENDLY 13000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner

This is a great little air conditioner. I was skeptical about buying a portable A/C due to the many complaints I've read about them, but due to the restrictions in my NYC co-op prohibiting window air conditioners, a portable was my only choice. I bought this to supplement the mediocre central air in my apartment, which is both too weak for the space it's supposed to cool, and not activated in time for the season's first heat wave. This usually happens in late April or early May and forces me out of my un-air-conditioned apartment for a few days.

I was able to hook this unit up quickly. I had to cut the plastic window assembly, which was too long for the width of my window, which was easy to do with a metal ruler and a utility knife. I also had to seal up the edges where the assembly meets the window frame, which I did by cutting some foamcore strips to the right width, covering them in black duct tape, taping them to the top and bottom of the plastic window assembly, placing the assembly in the window, and sealing the joins with more black duct tape. Using duct tape that matched the black window frame made it look neat and seamless. Aside from buying the materials, it took around 30 minutes total to get this out of the box, hooked up and working.

This unit emits a steady stream of freezing cold air, taking my apartment down from the 73-76 degrees provided by the building's unit to around 65-68, which I find much more comfortable. So far I've left it on most of the last 3 weeks and haven't had to empty it yet. The cooling is most effective near the unit, which I keep near my desk and bed, and less effective across the apartment in the kitchen, which is closed off allowing less circulation, and has a refrigerator emitting heat into the room.

The unit emits about the same amount of noise as a large fan. I find this easy to sleep to. Whether or not the compressor is on or off, the noise level is about the same. This unit is one of the smaller portable air conditioners I've encountered, which should make it easy to store in the winter.

Much can be said about this unit but I will keep it short.

It does what it's supposed to. There are plenty of features on it.

The weight is impressive. I read that it was heavy but for it's size, it's...heavy.

I was lucky that the unit arrived in good condition. Due to the weight, I believe it could be shipped with more protection and I can see how others received broken units.

This thing runs constantly. I live in a dry climate so I don't have to empty any reservoirs. It's still keeping things cool. The filters are easy to get to and clean.

This heater based on it's btu's immedately heats a 2 car garage. Within 8 minutes of ignition you can be comfortable with a sweatshirt or long sleeve flannel. The standard gas grill (20lb) tank lasts me about a week and a half if I am out there for 3 or 4 hrs a night 6 nights a week. You do turn it off and on intermittently about every 30 minutes if you have drafts like I do but that's not too bad. I would prefer permanent heat but for someone on a budget for the heater and the fuel it's a great alternative to permanent heat. Plus you can bring it to a jobsite if needed. I have heated a 2000 sq ft 2 story house during rehab processs comfortably with this heater. Almost too small for that but plenty good for the conditons there and at home. Happy with the heater and it only costs 15 bucks to fill the tank.

Heats well but not good for a shop with metal shop tools. Too much moisture in the Propane for un-vented heater. Doesn't take long for rust to appear on the tool surfaces. This would be true for any un-vented heater running on Propane.

I used this heater outside for 7 hours straight and I pretty much burned thru the entire 20# tank at full throttle. It did a great job. I did notice that at full power, the tank really iced up and seemed to reduce the heat output as the fuel level dropped. The height adjustment setting is convenient too. It held up fine in a breezy conditions. It was raining heavily and I operated under an EZ up awning. The heater got pretty wet from indirect rain. After two days of these conditions, I did notice that several of the exterior screws that are also painted black showed signs of rust. The manual did say to not let it get wet while it was operating. The ambient air temp was between 45 and 50 and while others around me were in jackets, I wore a t shirt.

I have a partially insulated two car garage in Colorado. With the outdoor temp. showing at 19 deg. my garage went from 38 to 60 in about 30 minutes. It's a great little heater and easy to store. I like the fact the housing stays cool to the touch even after long operation. On the low setting it just sips propane and that's also a huge plus. I'm very satisfied with this purchase!!!!!

I have owned Mr. Heater products for years. I still use the single tank Mr. Heater that I have had for 20+ years without no problems. This forced-air heater is used in my 24x26 detached garage. It brings the temperature up 20-25 degrees in less than 30 minutes on the low setting which sipps the fuel at a lower rate. I then turn it off and turn it back on when the temperature starts to dip. Amazon shipped my product to me in a couple of days after ordering. Super fast shipping plus great price.

I would definitely recommend buying this product.

This heater seems to have been cranked out to take advantage of the popularity of the new Micathermic technology. This new heating technology heats up the panel very quickly, but takes as long as the oil heaters to heat the room. This is to be expected. With out a fan, the speed of heating is determined by the size of the heating surface. Which in this case is around 30" X 30". This technology is completely silent, compared to the bubbling noise of the oil radiators.

Ok, the mistakes Soleus made. The digital thermostat is somewhat for show. In my 10' X 10' room the heater is set for 77 but the room never reaches 70 degrees. The heater turns off making you think it has reached it's goal. Same room, I put in another Soleus heater. I initially left this heater at the default 68 degrees that is displayed when the unit first comes on. Now the room stays above 78 degrees. After much experimentation and repositioning of heaters, I've discovered a trend. Each heater has a fixed error in their temp sensor. For instance the previous mentioned heater is exactly ten degrees off. You set it for 68, it tries to keep the room at 78. This error is different for each heater. In addition these heaters have roughly a five degree response range. In other words it may keep heating for an addtional five degrees past the target setting and after turning off may not start again until it's more than five degrees below the target setting.

Soleus did a great job at making a silent technology noisy. The single Micathermic panel heats up very quickly, so it expands quickly. Initially you'll hear these little creaking pops as the housing mount points are trying to hang on to the panel as it expands. Then you'll hear a gong as the panel bows out under pressure. These sounds aren't loud, but in a quiet room in the middle of the night, it wakes me up. Smaller multiple panels might reduce this noise problem.

As far as the smell, hang in there. It takes awhile, but it eventually goes away.

I gave this heater three stars because the problems I pointed out are pretty much the norm for most portable heaters I've used. Micathermic technology is great, someone just needs to put it in a quality device.

First unit dead after 6 months (lights come on no heat)

replacement huge dent in back panel on arrival (box perfect... they sent it that way!)

second replacement OK for a few months. Tried it as the weather got colder this month. Worked once, now won't heat up.

Customer service says the warranty starts (and ends) based on the original purchase date, so I'm out of luck.

We are currently living in a small house with no central heat or air while we save for a new house. Because of this, we have had an opportunity to try several types of portable heaters. This heater is by far my favorite. Last year it kept my bedroom very warm. The heat radiates out more slowly than many of the heaters we have tried and it really warms up the room instead of just racing to the ceiling. I never thought about that before, but we are very happy with the results. We are just starting our second year with this heater and have ordered three more just like it. I have read several reviews on heaters and it is weird how some people will love a heater while others hate the same heater. All I can say is that we are using it as a primary source of heat in about 150 square feet where temperatures frequently get in the teens and it seems to do the job well.

Honest reviews on Soleus Air HGW-308R Flat Panel Micathermic Radiator Heater

This space heater worked fine for about 6 months, then suddenly stopped working. For this price, I expect a product to function correctly and reliably. Less expensive space heaters I have purchased have worked beautifully for much much longer.

Customer service was not helpful. Do not buy this product.

I've just had this a short time and have been testing it out, so I can't speak to the reliability issues that some have raises. I do think that problem units tend to make it into these reviews more than the trouble free ones. After all, if you get a lemon you are highly motivated to tell the world.

This unit heats my room up much faster than the 1500w Deloughi oil unit that I tried. It is much quieter than the Sunbeam quartz unit that I tried. There is a slight hum when it is heating, but not at all objectionable. There is definitely some radiant effect that you can feel several feet away so it can be used as an instant-heat, personal heater. I find the thermostat to be fairly accurate. The room has been running 1 or 2 degrees hotter than the setting. Room is 180 sq. ft.

I am concerned about EMF radiation, so I tested it with a gauss meter. It gets into the "safe" range at about 32" (2 gauss). The reading is negligible at about 52" (.01 gauss). If you don't know what I am talking about, you should do some research if you want to avoid cancer. Most heaters are a little less, but I find this acceptable in the room I am using.

I like the remote because I do healing work in this room and I can adjust the temp without getting up from massage table. Back to reliability: I can't say for this unit, but I have used a Soleus dehumidifier for two summers and it is an outstanding machine. I give this unit a 4 because of others reliability experiences and the slightly higher EMF. As far as performance is concerned, I am thrilled. I needed a machine that was efficient and quiet and this fills the bill. Oil and quartz fell short of the mark. I had planned to get a mechanical thermostat model but they were out. I spent $10 more for the digital and like the way it works and the remote, I think the mechanical would have been more reliable in the long run however. When a digital unit dies it is usually the electronics that fail. (I am a former repairman)

Addendum: Still works fine in spring of 2013. I love this heater--heats room fast and quiet.

Given my past experiences with Frigidaire and Amazon (I had received two broken dehumidifiers, the second one being a replacement for the first one), I was a little skeptical of this. However I needed this because I must have a completely climate controlled room at a constant temperature and humidity level. Needless to say, I do not use this for the de-humidifier function. I run two separate humidifiers to keep the room between 50~65% relative humidity. However we can set this to the "auto" function and put it on 26-degrees Celsius and forget about it. I also have it on a timer, so we're not running it overnight and wasting electricity. When the timer shuts off, the settings are stored in the unit so when the timer turns back on, it will start off where it left off. Excellent all-around product.

Best Deals on Frigidaire FRA09EPT1 4100 BTUHeat/9000 BTU Cool Portable Air

I bought the FRA09EPT1 during the winter. I decided to buy the FRA09EPT1 for the following reasons: 1) Had heat and cool (did not want a separate heater for the winter); 2) could be installed in a room that did not have a standard-sized window; 3) did not need to make accommodations for a drip-line.

The unit was delivered in good packaging; and performed well in the winter. I installed the unit in a 12'x12' (~144sqft) shed-turned-office. Although the blowers that engage during heating are not that disruptive, it is not possible to talk on the phone in the office with the cooling compressor and hot-air exhaust blower running-that is, in cooling mode. The manufacturer lists the AC high-cooling noise at 55dB.

One thing to note about this style of air conditioner: since hot air is used to re-evaporate the condensate and exhaust it outside, there is a constant flow of air from outside in to the room. The unit exhausts a lot of air outside, pulling a vacuum on the room; this can make it difficult to open the door to the room in which this unit is installed. In Dallas, we frequently have 60%-80% humidity at 95-105 degF. This means that a lot of hot, humid air is coming back into replace the exhausted air. Although the unit was able to cool my office effectively, the humidity continues to remain very high. For these reasons, I am looking to replace this unit with a window unit (a ductless AC unit would also work well, but requires professional installation) which will not need to exhaust air outside the cooling envelope. It is bad enough that I am now willing to take on the small re-framing job to create a space in the wall for a window unit.

Honest reviews on Frigidaire FRA09EPT1 4100 BTUHeat/9000 BTU Cool Portable Air

I love this product. With Winter approaching the heater feature has actually kept my bedroom warm and I'm not freezing "to death" as I had been previous years. The AC portion is slightly disappointing as I didn't realize I would have have the hose directed outside so to use it I have to use my patio door because of the location and size of my window (my bedroom window is beyond huge). But it is a great product and works as it should. I'm happy I purchased this.

I researched for a long time before purchasing this Lasko heater last winter. I bought one and ran a test for a month to see if A)the heater would heat up a rather large living room, and B)whether my electric bill would go down. So, with my heat pump thermostat set on 65, we used this unit in our living area all last winter. Our electric bill was drastically lower! In fact, I liked the heater so much that I bought my daughter one, just to help her save money too.

Best points on the heater are the remote control, the oscillation, and the pedestal which better evenly distributes the heat. We bought 2 more smaller Lasko heaters from Amazon to basically heat up every room where we need heat this winter...and I guarantee that our electric bill will still be lower than merely using the heat pump alone. I had no idea that the heat pump ate up so much power.

Great heater!

This is a really nice and quiet fan, with 3 speeds, and an oscillation setting. It is great for sitting in a hot office, where you just want to cool yourself, without worrying about cooling the entire room. It works well where you already have air conditioning, but you want to save money on electricity by setting the thermostat a couple of degrees higher than normal.

Best Deals on Seville Classics UltraSlimline EHF10190B 12-Inch Personal Tower Fan

We love the size of this fan and it's portability BUT when it rotates it makes a squeak! We're using it in the bedroom at night so it doesn't make for a good night's sleep. Good price and we like it otherwise.

Honest reviews on Seville Classics UltraSlimline EHF10190B 12-Inch Personal Tower Fan

In a sense, it is louder than I thought "whisper quiet" should be. It's more of a loud whisper. I think what they mean is that the motor is "whisper quiet" so all you hear is the sound of rushing air rather than the buzz of the motor. In that sense, it is a quiet fan.

I'm using it in the bedroom. I placed a folded-up cloth underneath it to reduce any noise from the fan vibrating on the table. The fan is located on the opposite side of the room by the foot of the bed, with the air flow pointed toward the head of the bed. I don't mind the "white noise" of the sound of the rushing air from the far side of the room. Even on low speed, it creates enough air movement that, while it isn't blowing directly on me, I can feel the air moving around.

Unlike a one-star review for this product, mine does not click or make noise when oscillating. That reviewer must have gotten a defective item.

If you need absolute silence to sleep, this fan is not for you. If you don't mind white noise, I say give it a try.

I've had about three of these and they all end up with the same issue. They start out quiet, then slowly over time, get noisier, mainly an irritating rattle the source of which I suspect is the mountings for the cheap vertical plastic vane. This happens whether its oscillating or not although the oscillation mechanism ends up with its own particular noise.

Performed as advertised. Was fairly easy to install into an existing wall. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. The heater does make a little bit of an annoying whining noise when it runs, but you get used to it quickly, I only notice it if it runs at night when everything else is quite. Puts out more than enough heat for the average sized full bath.

This was a replacement for a similar model installed during a bath remodel 10 years ago. This was the right model...as confirmed on phone with Qmark before I ordered it. (The grill looked slightly different, as well as model number.) Best of all, I saved an electrician's bill by installing myself. First attempt...it went on....then an hour later wasn't working. Connections looked correct....but I disassembled the two wires and reconnected...and it's perfect. (Wires somehow got loose in the connectors on my first attempt.) Good product...best price.

I bought this model from Home Depot on clearance to warm up my basement last winter. It was a very long winter, and I ended up keeping it on 24/7 for almost 8 months. There was an immediate improvement even in the chilliest corner as soon as I switched it on, and the thermostat option was very helpful. Just recently the power light started flickering, and after that the overheat alarm started going off. I feel I got more than I paid for and so I hunted down the same model again for this winter!

Bought one of these about 2 weeks ago, seemed to work well at first. A few hours later the fan was making an annoying chirping noise off and on.

Fast forward 2 weeks, and I smell a burning electronic smell but can't tell where it's coming from. A few minutes pass and suddenly I see my shiny new space heater shooting sparks like crazy. Luckily I was across the room, and quickly unplugged it, otherwise it likely would have started a fire.

I bought a cheap one under the assumption they're pretty simple products, and anything should do the trick, but apparently "not burning your house down" is something you have to pay a little extra for.

I have been using one of these for seven (yes, 7) years at work and it's showing no signs of giving up the ghost. It runs almost all day every day including summer because the AC at work is too cold for me. I actually have another one waiting in the wings in case this does finally quit and am now buying one to replace a 9-year-old old Maxi-Heat in my bathroom. To those who let heaters run unattended (as in when you're sleeping)... you just shouldn't. If you must, get an oil-filled radiator type they're much safer to leave unattended

0 stars, unit needs to be retested by UL.

Well last night I woke up and felt cold. But the heater was still making noise. I got up and all the elements were off, there was a funny smell but the fan was still blowing cool air out. I toggled the switch and nothing would work.

So, I unplugged the heater, got my flashlight and screwdriver and looked inside. I took it apart(fan side) and the wire connected to the element had literally melted through the connection point and there were signs of burnt plastic on the wire and the connection point.

Basically there was a mini fire inside the unit while I was SLEEPING.I cannot explain how uncomfortable this knowledge made me feel today. I got lucky, but someone else might not.Someones kids may not, please avoid this product. I would never recommend this unit to anyone. Please don't buy this unit it quite literally could burn your house down while you sleep. Btw, the overheat alarm never went off, I don't understand how this unit is still on the market.

I am currently sitting in a cold room tonight because I have no heater down here atm. I need to get one tomorrow. If you have any question I will try to answer them.

As soon as I figure out how I will be reporting this to UL and see what they have to say, I have seen a few other negative fire related reviews about this product online.

Our fireplace is wood-burning/propane. We can't use wood due to allergies and found out that the propane was not properly run so that left us with an unusable fireplace due to its small and odd shape. We found this insert and purchased it hoping that our measurement were correct. It fits well, is lovely to look at, and does a very good heating the room. Very happy with our purchase.

After going through the specs, I felt that this insert would work with my new Equinox 18MM3207-M250 stand that I got at a great price. I received it quickly and it went right in with no problems at all and works like a champ. I can hear a slight buzz without the heat being on and it gets a bit louder with the heat. But overall I am very happy with this choice and glad that I got it. I hope it will give us many years of service. It certainly makes an already great piece of furniture even better.

AFTER YEARS OF BURNING WOOD WITH ALL THE DIRT AND SMOKE. THEN CONVERTING TO GAS LOGS WITH THE SMELL AND DUST WE FINALLY GOT SMART AND PURCHASED THIS UNIT. WE COULDN'T BE MORE SATISFIED. IT'S PERFECT. IT HEATS AND PRESENTS A VERY REALISTIC FIRE. OR, FIRE ALONE. SOOTHING TO WATCH WITH OUT THE PROBLEMS OF A WOOD FIRE OR GAS LOGS. IT INSTALLED EASILY. BASICALLY A PLUG AND PLAY. WISH WE HAD DONE IT LONG AGO.

Perfect fit in our small front room. Puts out enough heat to avoid using the furnace on cold mornings and evenings. The flame simulation is well done and makes you think warm too.

I bought this fireplace insert for a remodel job in our basement. After reading the reviews we decided to go with this model, and so far I'm really impressed with it. I still need to build the fireplace/mantel, and after that's done this unit should just slide right it. I took it out of the box, sat it on the counter, plugged it in, and in about 5 seconds we had instant flame and heat. The flames/embers look realistic for an electric fireplace, and this unit appears to be as realistic as another unit we bought a few years ago for about 6 times the price. For the money, this appears to be an excellent unit.

$30 but can be bought in some places locally for same price.

Kinda reminds me of cross between toaster and older computer with large loud fans. Only had it for a day though.

First impressionnot quiet. I dont care, u might. Cheaply made. Small. Looked at 16x11x6" dimensions on box and laughed. They lie about the dimensions by a little bit. Not a ceramic or quartz element, i dont think (but supported by ceramic posts). Frankly, I wanted old school style heater...just a filament wire with electricity flowing through it.

Trying to heat one small room. 1500w is kinda a lot of power consumption. Think of 1000w microwave on for hours or a 1500w light bulb. You could probably cook with this thing or heat stuff up (after kill switch mod/rotation). Makes me wonder what a hot plate burner consumes for power and how hot that gets though, well, cause those are half the price of this.

Doesnt seem to be performing as well as the small Patton brand one it replaced but that one cost twice as much at least. Not sure of Patton wattage and it was ceramic element. This Duraflame heated the room to 71F in the winter. The Patton has lasted for 3 years or more.

well it hasnt even been a week and the sheet metal is vibrating and is just annoying. Kinda wanted some white noise and heat but now I dont think I can use it in the house unless I can fix that noise.

In this case I think you get what u pay for.

How do I make this 2 stars now?

I'm neither impressed nor dissatisfied with the heater. It puts off immediate heat in the space in front of it, runs loud, but we use it daily... I like it, not sure if I would go out of the way to reccommend it though...

me, like everyone else in this economy is trying to save money on home heating bills. i live in a fairly small trailer, and with kerosene for my furnace at almost 4.00 a gallon, you have to try something to save a few dollars to stay warm, while not breaking the bank.

i purchased this particular model for alot less locally, and brought it home and fired it up. puts out a decent amount of heat for a 1500W heater. i was able to raise the temperature in my living room by 4 degrees in about an hour.

while it won't heat a whole house, it seems to do fine for a small or midsize room.

built in safety features! if you knock it over, it will cut off automatically. i would NOT SUGGEST you leave this on all night after you go to bed.

it's not a bad deal to supplement your primary heating source such as a furnace.

if you think you will heat your house/living space with this, think again, it simply doesn't have the power to do it. otherwise a decent buy. but, you have to be right up on it to feel the heat being produced.

Lasko Oscillating Ceramic Tower Heater Reviews

Over the years, I've had all kinds of small heaters, both forced air and ceramic. This one takes the cake.

Like most other heaters of this price range, the thermostat doesn't work consistently all of the time, but it works as well or better than any other heater I've used.

What makes this heater great is that it really cranks out the heat! The low setting is great for a small room like a bathroom, and the high setting can bring up the temperature of my large living room in a very short time. I'm really impressed with its heating abilities.

It isn't silent, but it's as quiet as anything else out there. If I turn it on while watching TV, I might have to turn up the volume one or two clicks, but that's it. I doubt it would be prohibitive to sleeping, if you want it in your bedroom.

The oscillation isn't something I've used a whole lot, but eyeballing it, I'd say it rotates somewhere between 45 and 60 degrees.

I've had this Lasko heater for 2+ years and it has worked like a charm... reliable, durable, a little soldier churning out heat. Controls are easy to use and there is a fan only setting for hot days. I keep it near me so the heat output is fine (not trying to heat up the entire room).

What I don't like about it though (and hence my 3 star rating) is the noise from the fan --it's soooo loud; too loud to have in my office when I'm on the phone, and too loud in the room when the tv is on. If you want white noise when you fall asleep, this is the fan for you. But I'm looking for a new QUIET heater to replace this unit.

I did a lot of research online and got a Honeywell ceramic heater from Target. I wasn't happy with it and took it back.

Then I got this one, the Lasko oscillating ceramic heater. I guess I will keep it, but not because it's super great; I just don't expect that I could find anything better.

I like that it has two settings (low = 875 W, high = 1500 W), because my apartment wiring is not great and it worries me when it switches on and all the lights dim. Since I'm just using it to supplement a flaky hot water radiator, I don't usually need to run it on high. I've been running it for about 3 weeks, on low, using about 130 W on average. I just set it on low and use the thermostat to try to keep the temperature in the room stable.

The thermostat, though, is rather schizophrenic. I guess this is a problem with all of these little electric heaters, though, since the Honeywell I returned was even worse. I want this heater to just sit in the corner and turn on when needed to keep the temperature in the room constant, since my main heater varies too much in temperature, but I find myself adjusting the thermostat back and forth pretty regularly because it doesn't behave consistently from one day to the next. The settings are different for high and low mode, too, presumably since it heats up its own thermostat and shuts off prematurely.

In low mode (1), I have it almost to the lowest setting to get the room to stay at 65-70 F. I often find it turning on when the room is already warm, and not turning on when the room is cold. In high mode (2), I have to turn it up towards the top to maintain the same temperature. I am sure they could have compensated for any self-heating effects and made the thermostat more accurate no matter what the circumstances, but they didn't bother.

It doesn't have any kind of tip-over safety switch, but the other ceramic heater didn't either. Maybe it's not as critical with these because the outside surface doesn't get too hot. I can actually touch most of the surface of the front grill while it's on high and not get burned. It has an overheat protection switch, which would probably trigger if it fell onto something that blocked the flow of air, but I've never seen it activate.

I don't find it terribly loud, but I have a jet engine of a humidifier in the same room (Holmes garbage), so maybe I'm biased.

It also has a (20 W) fan-only mode, which could theoretically make the unit useful in warmer weather, too. The fan is apparently hard-wired to the thermostat in every mode, though. You might think that a thermostat-controlled fan is a good thing, and I would too, except that the fan is stupidly connected with the same functionality as in the heater modes, so the fan turns ON when the room is cold, and turns OFF when the room is hot. Duh.

Oh, it also oscillates. I care so little about this feature I almost forgot it had it. It seems to circulate air just fine whether this is on or off. I'd be happier if they left out the oscillation and spent the money on better temperature regulation. It might be even better if the thermostat could switch it from low to high when needed.

Honest reviews on Lasko Oscillating Ceramic Tower Heater

I have only had this for a few weeks so I can't vouch for its long-term durability. But this heater is designed very nicely. It looks and feels of good quality materials. Other positives:

* soft quiet sound very easy to sleep with

* elegant and practical handle

* oscillates to spread the heat around a little (cute little R2D2)

* small footprint but stable

I use the heater in a 10 x 10 room. I haven't set the thermostat dial above 3 out of 10, even when it's been 10 F. outside. I usually keep it in low power mode. But I'm not very demanding that way so if you need a really strong fan blowing high heat or if you prefer the direct warm feeling of glowing radiant heat you might not be satisfied.

Shortly before getting this "Lasko Oscillating Ceramic Heater" I had tried and returned two unsatisfactory heaters. One was a poor quality $20 heater ("DeLonghi DFH132"). The other, which I bought at WalMart for around $34, was one of those old radiant heaters (a couple of feet long with wires strung back and forth) which was unacceptably loud.

I purchased this Lasko ceramic heater (model 5429) at Target after reading all the rave reviews that people wrote. I was not disappointed in my decision to buy this particular heater. I honestly can't find anything to complain about. It works very well, I especially like the oscillating action, and find that the heat gets more evenly distributed throughout the room because of it. People that don't like the oscillating feature can just not turn it on, at least you have a choice.

As far as noise level, I don't find that it's any noisier than any other heater I've ever used, in fact it's probably quieter than most. I am extremely pleased with this small but mighty little heater. The last test for me will be when I receive my electric bill. To heat my small livingroom to a comfortable temperature, I put the control on the low setting. I find that works just fine, without using the higher (1500 watt), more costlier heat setting. And because the heater works so well, I only have to put it on the third notch temperature setting, to get the results I need. Also the instruction manual is so simple, you don't need an engineering degree to understand it.

I would highly recommend this mighty little heater. The cost is fairly cheap, but the quality is outstanding. You don't see that very often.
