I have a furnace heat register under my desk that always starts with cooler air before the warm comes out. When the furnace isn't running, my feet get cold and uncomfortable. This was the perfect size for me to use under my desk to keep that space warm (and it radiates up to my hands as well since it really gets my general work area warm.

This is not a huge direct heat product. I've used a heat dish which could almost give you sunburn. This is perfect for getting the chill out of the air without using up a lot of energy. I calculated it to cost about 26 cents a day if you run it for 10 hours (which I don't).

It does have a shut off if it gets too hot (according to the directions) but it looses a star for not having a shut off if it tips over. I don't want to test it out but if it gets knocked over with the heat face down, I'd be afraid of something burning before it could shut off.

Overall, a great little solution for any cold spot.

These are the worst filters I have had ever laid my hands on. There are no labels or any words on these filters. They look like very cheap filters. I bought six and did not fit my intake vent and contacted seller but no success. Save yourself some money and frustration...Don't buy anything like this from this seller.

I recently moved into a house that had an exceptional heating system except in the master bedroom (probably due to a large French door). Didn't see the logic in heating the whole empty house just to keep one room warm, I started to look for a suitable heater. Upon some search, Vornado DVH surfaced as a viable option. Although pricier than other models, if it did what it claims to do (even warmth, quietness, safe to kids' touch, and good control) I thought the product would be ideal for my family needs.

While searching for the best price, I came to read the ratings by others on the Amazon site, and it was disturbing for me to see that there was a noticeable disparity among the raters (please look through the reviews and see for yourselves-5 to 1 star). But it sounded great at least for those who had them in working condition, so I decided to give it a try, knowing that there is a chance that I might get the bad apple.

Well, I have been using the unit for a while now and I have to tell you that it is worth MORE than its weight in gold!!! It is quite; temperature control is dead accurate; heating is impressively even throughout the room; and it really doesn't get hot at all to the touch; and even looks cool. I have occasional circuit breaker tripping when I use hair drier in the bathroom connected to the same room, but Vornado has not tripped the circuit not even once, even though I usually have it run at 78F when I use it (basically all night).

I'm sure others' claims on defective products are valid. But if you are unsure whether to give it a try because of those reviews like I was a few weeks ago, I strongly recommend you give this product a try. Even if you end up with a defective product like others claim, if you can get a good one after exchange (and get something like what I got), it is worth the trouble-and believe me I'm an extremely lazy person when it comes to product exchanges...

I only write this review because I wished that I had something like this to help my decision making. Hope it helps you.

I live in a basement apartment in Washington DC. The winters here get pretty cold and I do not have control of the heater. The landlord upstairs controls the heat (and they are rarely home).

I plugged this heater into my front room. The room measures 20x25'. The temperature gage intially read 58 degrees! Wow that's cold. I set the digital temperature gage to 72 degrees. It initially took about an hour to reach that temperature (I think the electronics needed to be broken in).

This little heater has been plugged in and running nonstop, 24 hours a day, for the past three weeks and it is nothing short of spectacular!

I positioned the heater at one corner of the apartment and it heats the entire room and keeps every corner of the room at the same temperature.

Since it has a plastic casing, it is constantly cool-to-the-touch and I have no reservation with leaving it on when I leave in the morning to go to work. The unit *never* gets hot.

I thought $100 was a bit expensive for a heater, but wow... this purchase has been justified.

I also have a humidifier (by Bionaire) running on a 24-hour basis to prevent the room from becoming too dry.

The temperature gage on the heater is spectacular. You really can tell the difference between 70 and 72 degrees with this heater.

It's fabulous. Nothing short of fabulous.

The Digital Vortex Heater is wonderful! We have a drafty attic office in our home, which has been impossible to heat. We've gone through at least 3 different heaters (all under $50) with no luck. We decided to try the Vornado Digital because of "how" it heats.

With other heaters, the room never really got warm. As long as you sat or stood directly in front of the electric heater, you were freezing. With the Vornado Digital heater, it warms the entire room by circulating the heat. And believe me, no matter what other says, it works! The only drawback, is it does take (depending on the size of the room, how cold it is outside, and how drafty the room is) some time to heat up the room. For the attic office space we have, it's about a 20' by 20' space. It warms up the room in about 20 mins, depending on how cold it is outside. BUT, once it's warm, it stays warm! The internal thermostat on the Vornado Digital works quite well. We actually have to turn it down or off after a while, because it gets so warm. I have been noticing after a few weeks of use, that it seems to warm up faster. So maybe there was a break-in period it had to go through, I can't be sure. Although, it does seem to work better after a little use.

We tried several different heaters from several different manufacturers, and the Vornado was by far the best at warming a room, and keeping it warm! Is this heater the kind of heater that pumps out direct HOT air? No. If you want a heater that is just going to be pointed at you to keep you warm, this might not be the heater for you. But if you want a heater that will heat up a room and keep it warm, with soothing warm air, there is no other heater better for the price! Again, it's most amazing feature being that is circulates the air throughout the room. Just for the feature alone I am satisfied, because I feel that's the secret to correctly heating a space. The only downfall being, that it takes some time to do it.

My suggestion is to at the very least, try the Vornado Digital. I purchased it from the Vornado website for $100.00, but I suggest going through Amazon to save on shipping. I think you'll be happy you tried it!

I recommend this one only. It seems to me that DVTH is an upgrade version of DVH (you can see the product number which is different) and far better than VH2. Current temp. and setting temp. is shown repeatedly with fan speed ('LO', 'HI', and 'FA'n only), and it accurately monitor and warm up the room.

Other heaters stops fan as well as the heating element when the desired temparature is reached; this one doesn't. Fan works continuously (slowly) when the temparature is reached... so that the entire room air is heated up properly. I tried Homles one, and Black and decker one, but they don't have this functionality.

I am pretty sure this fan works well esp. when there is another heat source (like ordanary apartment) but heating is not enough. I am not sure for other cases. But definitely, this guy is well worth the money (I know this is expensive). You can search hard and ask for the best price in a big online company which sells this.

I have owned several different space heaters from different manufacturers over the past 5 years or so, and this is the best by far. Most ceramic heaters generate too much heat in a small area and they get hot enough to start fires. The ceramic heaters I have used have melted parts of my desk or chair, they are a real fire or burn hazard. Even though they have fans inside to blow the heat, the heated air is so hot that it never gets more than a few inches in front of the heater before rising straight up. You are always either freezing cold or in fear of being burned depending on hwo many inches you place it from you. Oil heaters are nice but they have a terrible smell (supposedly this goes away) and they do not have a way to spread the heat at all.

The Vortex heater has a medium sized fan with a small wire heating element behind it. It's very much like the way a hair dryer works to heat air. This heater generates lots of air flow, more like a regular fan, while heating the air. You can place this heater 6 feet away and you will still feel a warm breeze from it.

The vortex heater is VERY quiet, and the front of the heater does not get hot enough to burn you. I also use this heater a quiet personal fan for the summer time. If you set the FAN switch to ON, the heat switch to LOW and the thermostat all the way down, it will blow air but not stop heating it.

The plug and power cord on the heater does not get hot like other heaters, but remember never cover the power cord on any space heater or high-powered appliance because it does still generate some heat.

The heater does a good job of detecting the temperature of the room and will turn off when it reaches the desired temperature setting.

The heater will turn off if tipped over. If the heater is bumped it turns off for a second. However, if you wanted to place this heater on an angled surface it will still work. Whatever the mechanism it has, it allows it to be angled but not tipped over all the way or bumped suddenly. The heater does not have a way to aim it up or down. It is preconfigured to blow at a very slight upward angle.

I have been using this heater to heat my 7 month old son's play area recently. He started crawling and the front of the design on the heater is just barely large enough to allow his tiny little fingers to poke into the front of the heater and get hit by the fan (this has never happened but at the largest part of the gaps in the front of the unit, it would be possible). Other than that, this heater is safer for children because neither the air nor the front of the heater gets hot. I would say that in a few more months his fingers will be too large to poke through. If this heater had the fine wire mesh front like most other heaters, it would be perfect.

The vortex heater is a little more expensive than other heaters, but it is well worth the extra money. I have had this heater for about 2 or more years and it works GREAT!

I bought this thing about 3 weeks ago and it's already blowing cold air. In the three weeks I had it, it was doing OK, but suddenly even the high setting won't blow nothing more than a semi-warm draft. On low, it's nothing more than a room fan, no heat at ALL. Get something better if you need to warm a room. This heater is priced in the same vein that "you get what you pay for".

Box easy to frame in. Stuffed a 34,000 btu log set in. Not alot of play for connection, could've had more if used proper log set. Did not come with clear instructions for mounting fan location but could figure out after eye balling for a little bit. Costs are same with Amazon and Northern Tool, although shipping was half the cost with Amazon. This item regardless is shipped from Procom. After installed, I cranked it up and got it operating, checking for temperatures surrounding insert. Frame was cool, floor tile not effected. heat was rising although not effecting above and backwards area where future electronics will be placed. It's working out as planned although not enough room inside for planned gas shutoff valve. That had to be placed outside of insert. I got a good deal on refurbished log set at 34,000 btu and wanted to take advantage of that, dimensions fit although cramped inside insert. I don't see problems at all and can see that insert doing it's job for a long time. Hopefully log set lasts awhile. For an insert and prices on inserts would highly recommend this one.

We used an LP fireplace as the primary heating source for the first floor of our last home. We are just finishing up remodeling a home we purchased out of foreclosure and decided immediately that we would us a large LP fireplace as the primary heating source for the first floor in this home as well. We will be moving in soon and this unit has already proven to be well worth the price. If you are in the market for a gas or LP vent free fireplace, and are handy in any way, shape or form I suggest doing what I did. I bought this firebox, chose a vent free gas log set that would be compatible and built my own mantle out of solid maple. I assembled and installed the unit myself. By doing this I saved HUNDREDS of dollars over "packaged" vent free fireplaces I have seen on the market, AND I got a better fireplace.

This unit is solid, well-made and offers several different ways to attach the mantle. It also has a huge access door in the louvered area at the bottom for installation of the blower if you should be so inclined. Great product at a great price. Definitely recommend.

I have a 20ft x 20ft two car garage with a 12ft ceiling and this thing keeps it right at 62 degrees on the first setting.

Customer service is also great, mine came with some shipping damage and the parts were not available to fix it. I waited a few weeks during which time I was contacted by customer support a few times keeping me updated as to when the parts would arrive. After about 3 weeks the weather started to get cold and the parts still had not arrived so I contacted Mr. Heater support again and they replaced the entire unit leaving me with the old unit for spare parts. So while it wasn't the ideal situation, and though wasn't their fault (UPS breaks many things), they made it right and were very pleasant doing so.

The only con, and a very small one at that, would be that I would like a bit more control of the temperature. At least in the garage setting the lowest temperature it keeps it at is 62, which I really only need maybe 45-50, just to keep the cars from freezing ect. Other than that, its perfect!

Have tried two other mfrs and they had electronic timers and very short lives. So went to Woods to get a REAL water heater timer with an old fashioned mechanical timer. It does not have all the bells and whistles as the electronic timers but what I needed was a "reliable and rugged comercial" timer as I don't want to replace timer every 6-12 months and I believe that is what I got.

I also tried purchasing a used electronic timer controlled switch and it was totally destroyed but seller did not realize it , got a full refund but just forced me to buy the new timer.

I purchased this item on Nov. 2, 2011, (received it on Nov. 9, 2011), replacing an existing heater that had gone out. It was easy to hook up to the existing line that was already installed in the room from the old heater. I have NO complaints about the heater, I love it, it does everything it say and then some. It has a glass plate along with a screen in the front of it, which at first when I read that it's a 'cool touch' heater, I was very sceptically about that, but honestly it is very cool to the touch, even in the front! The only place the heat comes out is at the top and us having dogs in the house, makes this very comforting to me, as our old one was a 'brick' burner heater and it did leave the front open to being able to get to the flame and the bricks and possibly getting burnt or worse. In an approximate 15x15 area room, we can comfortable set it around 1-2 on the dial and stay very toasty with it. It's a dual gas heater, meaning you have have either natural gas or propane to hook it to, we have the propane, which there was nothing to do but hook it to the right line hole, (which are very clearly marked) and didn't have to worry about setting any other settings with it, it also has an electronic push button ignition, which does not even take batteries to work it and comes with a bunch of safety features as well. I plan on getting a larger one to replace the old brick burner we now have in our living room, but first I would like to let you know about the seller we purchased it from through Amazon, Northern Tools & Equipment, it states both here on Amazon and Northern's website that it comes with a blower,(but can't be used with this model), IT DOES NOT! I have went through countless emails back and forth about this between Amazon and Northern Tools, they, (Northern Tools & Equipment) just keep telling me that they will refund the money if I send it back to them and AFTER it passes THEIR inspection, which anyone will tell you that it won't after being hooked up! So, when I order my next ProCom heater I WILL NOT order it through Northern Tools & Equipment! I will make doubly sure that it comes from another seller and not Northern Tools! They will not stand by what they sell as far as what is suppose to come with it. I have no problems with Amazon, I have purchased many, many items over many years through them and will continue to make purchases through Amazon, they are a great company to buy from, they strongly stand behind what they sell and they have done everything in their power to correct this problem, but Northern Tools & Equipment refuses to co-operate, except as I stated earlier to return the product and refund my money after it passes inspection. I purchased this unit to replace a ProCom 10,000 btu unit I had gotten in Quartzsite, Arizona 7 years ago. That unit worked fine until last winter when it wouldn't stay lit. I thought this was the same unit until I received it & it said on the box "not for use in an rv" It also said that it would not work above 4,500 ft. None of this was mentioned on the web site. I purchased mine on sale at Northern Tool while visiting my in-laws during Christmas of 2009. I grew up in the family plumbing business so was able to install the gas line myself, but those without experience will need professional installation. If you are replacing an existing appliance it is a non-issue. Otherwise, gas pipe and installation will cost more than the unit itself.

We live in Appalachia where power can go out for days and intended it to provide backup heat for one room. Once installed, however, the warm glow of the blue flame was irresistible and it has been on every winter since. We set its thermostat slightly lower than that of our inefficient central heat which now kicks on just often enough to disperse the heat and provide ventilation. This appliance has paid for itself in savings on our gas bill! It is supposed to only heat 300 Sq. Ft., but 700 Sq. Ft. is comfortable with a sweater when power is out and outside temperatures are below freezing.

We used to run our generator constantly when power was out just for the furnace fan, but since we bought this we can rely on a $100 inverter to cool our freezer an hour in the morning and evening and watch TV a few hours a night. Instead of standing in the freezing cold every 6 hours to refill the generator, we could fill up our Jeep once every two weeks. We live near the well heads, but if natural gas would be interrupted it will run about 3 days on a 20# propane grill tank (left outside).

An Excellent, well-built little heater (I now own two of this model).

The mandatory things I needed included:

1. A room sensitive/automatic thermostat (NOT the low-med-high manual type)

2. The size needed to be around 10,000 BTU's

3. That it was made by a trusted company

4. Priced low enough to fit my retirement budget

This unit fit the bill perfectly. I have used a much larger PROCOM heater as my primary living space heater for many years and, as long as I clean out the pilot every year (shut off for the summer), it runs perfectly.

The good:

The unit was well packed and the Installation instructions were accurate.

Everything needed to install the heater(including wall mounting anchors/screws and an allen wrench to UN-cork the gas port) was included.

The unit has a glass cover plate that extends across much of the front burn area (behind the metal grill) which serves as an added flame safety device, dust shield and draft blocker (to keep the pilot from being blown out) which is really an excellent idea. Access to this area to service the pilot is via four screws, two at the top and two at the bottom of the front grill.

-The igniter spark is strong and consistent. Once air was out of the gas pipe the pilot lit quickly and stays on.

The bad:

Nothing to speak of.

Notes:

As a dual use type (can be set to either Natural gas or Propane) it has two internal regulators and independent pilot systems. You should note that the pilot on the right is for the propane. It burns cleanly and fully covers the thermocouple which glows red as it should.

The gas pipe inlet ports are located on the bottom left as you face the heater. I ran my 1/2" black pipe to the left of the heater which allowed for a gentle "s" type curve of the flex pipe. I also purchased the Mr. Heater F271239 One-Stop Universal Gas-Appliance Hook-Up Kit which has everything you will need (except a gas pressure tap which is optional as long as you know your line pressure is in spec.)

The temperature sensing bulb is on the back of the heater very close to the bottom edge. Being on the back, you should be aware of the temperature of the wall you are mounting the heater to. I needed to mount one of my units on a cement wall which constantly radiates cool air during the winter. To minimize excessive and false thermostat turn-on, I insulated the wall behind the heater with 1" hard board insulation then used 2x4 pieces to stand the heater off the wall. So far, so good.

Summary:

The unit burns cleanly with a perfect blue flame and It puts out a good amount of heat for the modest size of the flame area. I liked the heater so much that I purchased a second one and will now be able to run the entire winter with the oil burner off.

Beware! If you're think you're getting a standard size looking fireplace, think again. It's about the size of a small guitar amplifier. No dimensions are given of it in how it's advertised so no way of knowing in advance how big it really is. I had to laugh when I received it because it was so tiny. I would not recommend this heater to anyone, don't care how good they say it heats! I returned it the very next day I received it. To make matters even worse I'm still waiting to be refunded, it's been a month ago that I returned it. Not sure who to blame here, Amazon or Heat Surge?

The Hot Springs tech told me that this heater is what they call an "after market heater" It does not say "Watkins Nofault" on the heater only the part number and it is of poorer quality, I was expecting a real Watkins nofault. No wonder it only has a 1 year guaranty and the real Watkins heater had a five year guaranty. Not very happy because I paid a good price expecting a real Watkins, product is not worth the money.

The item shipped was not an original Watkins heater as the listing indicated, but was a clone without the same specs. Yes it is a 6KW heater but it does not have the PDR (Power Down Reset) function, nor does it have the platinum coated heater core. I'd ship it back if I wasn't in dire need of a heater for my spa.

We had recently moved to Portland Oregon from Los Angeles and needed to have a bit more heat than we could get from our wood stove. I found this one on Amazon and took a chance. I liked that they had the owner's manual online and I could check it out before buying. I loved that it is MADE IN USA!

*Arrived on a mini pallet, shipper brought inside house :)

*Arrived on time

*Was fairly easy to unpack

*Took two men to set it up (we paid professional installers $250 plus piping $400)

*Works beautifully!

*Small footprint

*Heats house to 70 degrees from 55 in matter of 20 minutes when outside temp is low 40's

*Easy to control, set dial and leave it (I am disabled and can easily turn on or off as needed)

*Has easy instructions for cleaning and maintenance

*extra large hopper allows us to leave on for two days without adding more pellets

only thing I do not like is that it has a vibration when fan is kicking off, could be the pad we have, had same problem with last pellet stove too. Might need to place carpet under pad (we have laminate flooring)

We are thinking about getting another one to set up in our garage/office out building

I am a retired Master and I am simply amazed at this product!

The product shipped incredibly fast, the shipper "CEVA" was a professional and very helpful. The product was well packed, protected and secure.

The product came fully assembled with exception to a few minor items. I removed my wood stove and installed this new pellet stove in less than 1 hour!. After connecting the flue piping, I put a bag of pellets in the hopper, turned it on and I was amazed at how fast this device worked. Over the next week, this device impressed me more and more everyday. So much so that I am going to buy another one for my finished basement. I just can't say enough about the product or the vendor. This stove really works and does more than I ever expected. Having burned coal and wood for the last 15 years, I can tell you that this is the way to go, clean, simple and efficient.
