Delivering mail in my postal vehicle in the summertime in Florida gets kinda warm...can you spell H-A-D-E-S? The little fan that is installed in our trucks doesn't provide much relief and has limited range so for years I've been buying the clip-on fans sold at Wally World only to have each and every one blow a fuse or break within a month or so. The specified fuses on these junkers are impossible to find and replacements that were recommended at Radio Shack would blow almost immediately. But those fans were the only ones I could find locally so this year I decided to try something else and ordered this Tornado Fan and so far (about a month) I'm very happy with it. YES it is loud at high speed but the postal vehicle's built in fan is very loud as well so thats a wash as far as I'm concerned. The variable speed on the Tornado fan means you can adjust it to your liking and quickly turn it down to a relative whisper when you need to. There is a non-adjustable version of this fan but for a couple extra bucks in my opinion you get much more usability with that variable speed. If you listen to the radio in your vehicle the noise may be too much but if you're just working and driving and humming your own tunes this fan will help you be more comfortable.

This fan is very efficient and powerful, but makes a loud sound like a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner. I am a trucker so the sound doesn't bother me, but my friends hate it.

This fan is very popular with truck drivers who need to defrost their windshield in super icy conditions (turn heater on full blast, blow heat from dash/upper vents all over windshield, roll windows to regulate)

This fan has probably saved my life a couple times in Colorado for that, when the wipers ice up, you are screwed! Sometimes its so cold window wash doesn't help So this worked!

The pros:

works very efficiently, has dial to turn down the noise at lower speeds

The cons: Motor is cheap, may require removing and lubricating motor over lifetime of product,

NOISE

vibration

plastic mounting attachment breaks eventually before the fan gives out. (I make my own bracket then)

Keep kids fingers out of there, it will break them.

If you have no car AC, this will help you out for $20.

I can't for the life of me imagine someone being able to try this first, then one of the dozen or so alternatives, then purchasing this. I can best compare it to my red TORO 110/120 volt leaf blower in noise output. It simply doesn't need to be this loud. Only positive attributes are its compact form factor and strong clip. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, or wish to soon be that way, this product is for you. Otherwise keep looking or you can buy mine at my next garage sale. I turned it on and then put it in a drawer and it's been there since.

Honest reviews on RoadPro RPSC-857 12-Volt Tornado Fan with Removable Mounting Clip

This fan is bigger than you think. It's 11" tall, 8" deep and 5" wide.

You can clip it on to something or bolt it down permanently (hardware included). It aims wherever you want it.

I like it, glad I bought it. It doubles as a hair dryer or tent dryer on camping trips!

This fan moves and unbelievable amount of air, but when people say its *loud*..... On the highest setting it's probably going to be unbearable to most people. I have a high tolerance for noise and noisy equipment (construction) but this fan is LOUD, even to me.

On high, the RoadPro Turbo Fan easily drowns out the sounds of my 350 V8 engine, headers, dual exhaust, AND my 38" mud tires. My stereo can't even do that ;)

This fan does what is expected for a small DC plugged fan. I bought 3 others, and this one probably puts out more air flow than all 3 combined.

Bought this heater back in Dec. (from another store) to heat up a fairly large living room. The unit was a little smaller than I thought in would be once I took it out of the box, but I still thought it might do the job. I like the basic design of the unit with the curve blower at the top and it does blow a fair amount of hot air. However, I didn't feel that the air that was blowing out of it was all that hot. I have a smaller "personal" unit that seems a lot hotter. So, unfortunetly it didn't really heat the room up. I could only get the room temp to increase by 2-4 degrees no matter how long the unit was on for. It worked better as a personal heater in the room, but that's not what I bought it for. I do feel that this unit would work better in a smaller room like a bedroom, especially when you close the room up. You could have a nice toasty room in about an hour. The fan isn't to loud but it might be a little more noticable in a smaller room.

Bottom line, it's a great unit but it didn't really meet my needs in this case. Although it didn't really work for me, I think it would work great in a smaller enclosed area. I ended up returning the unit and then purchased the Optimus H-5300. Although this is a Quartz heater with no fan, it's a bigger unit and is by far, hotter. It takes a little longer to heat up the room (not much), but I can increase the room temp by 4-8 degrees.

I brought this heater home, plugged it in, and it ran on the high setting for about 5 minutes, constantly switching between low and high. Then, it shut off, and it would not turn back on. I unplugged it and let it cool for an hour or so, and ran it on the low setting this time. It stayed on, but was constantly switching on and off, and did not give off enough heat to heat a bathroom, much less a large room. I returned the heater and got another just like it. This one ran slightly better, but again shut off after 5-10 minutes and would not power back up. This thing is of no value. You'd have more success heating a room with your computer.

This heater will heat up a room in a fair amount of time and keep it warm even if you have it on the lowest setting. This heater does not get hot or anything if you use it although the cord may get hot after a while.

I got this heater half price for $35 at Target a few days ago and yesterday it broke on me. I only used it for a brief amount of time each day just to heat up the room for approximately 3 days and it broke. The power indicator would light up but the control panel would not work no matter how I pushed it. It would occasionally come on and off flickering on and off. Basically I think the control panel area is defective so I will be bringing it back and getting a better model.

Overall: Good price, nice heat, bad build quality. Sort of loud on high setting.

Honest reviews on Honeywell EnergySmart Thermawave Ceramic Heater, HZ-860

Only things I wish it has a 3-prong plug with GFCI safety built-in, better sensor, and air filter. Also, I am not sure how good it is as a heater: the air it blows out doesn't seem to be hot enough to heat up a 20x20 room, at least not quick enough. I guess three Envi Heaters of 475 watts or four Econo-Heater running simultaneously would do a better job than just one of this 1500 watt heater. We'll see.

Holmes Tower Quartz Heater

We've been using an older Holmes Tower Quartz Heater at the office for eight years. That's right the same unit for eight years. It's still going strong. My boss and I sometimes covertly fight over who gets it, and coworkers are envious. So, when I decided to look for a space heater at home, I looked to a name and performace I knew and opted for this model, the HQH308C, under $50 at a local hardware store. My living room, which is open to the shotgun kitchen, measures about 12x18, kitchen excluded, and it does a decent job of warming the area. It does a fantastic job of warming me within 12 feet. Yes, the infrared heating is somewhat directional, but unlike regular radiant or forced air heaters, the quartz elements warm the objects in the room the floor, the wall, that cool desktop or cold leather sofa, that cold you as opposed to just warming the air. It feels a bit like sitting in front of a roaring fireplace, especially if you're too close and it's set on high. At work or home, we've never had to run one of these on high. We tried it once, but in a smaller space, you're quickly coming out of your cardigan and turning it down. Also, at the office, the building has forced air that NEVER stops, so heating the air is almost impossible since that air is quickly cycled out of the building and replaced. Because it primarily heats the objects in the room rather than the air, this little number makes all the difference, even in summer when the office temp has been (I kid you not) 55 degrees and all the windows were covered in condensation while we shivered. The drawback: coworkers would look for any excuse to hang out in front of my desk for as long as they could.

I like to be comfortable, especially at home, and don't want to spend my evenings bundled up for the sake of saving on utilities. This unit lets me set my thermostat to around 65 but still watch TV on the couch or whip up a quick cup of cocoa while barefoot and wearing short sleeves, which is just the way I like it. Last winter, having only the central heat (electric) meant heating the whole place when I spent most of my time in only half of my 700 square foot home, so evenings at 74 degrees meant some hellacious bills. This winter, it's going to be a LOT more affordable.

If you're looking for something you can put in a corner and aim at a general area, this heater will more than suffice. You can kick off your shoes, sprawl like it's still summer, and be truly comfortable. If you're looking for something that will make the space behind it equally toasty, then this is not the heater for you you'll need to warm the area air, which is not specifically what an infrared radiant heater is designed for. This is a great little heater, though, and I would recommend it (and have) to a friend.

We live in a rural area and our large home is heated by baseboard heaters utilizing oil to heat the water. Needless to say....very expensive right now. I work at home and my office is located at one end of a very large family room with a full wall of windows next to my work area. I thought if I could find an effective little heater, I could save money by setting the thermostat lower at least 3 or 4 degrees. I tried 3 other heaters all closely priced in comparison. One was a heater that blew hot air, but by the time the air got where it was going, it felt cold. The other type of heater was a floor baseboard radiant type without a fan. The third...just way too noisy, forget it! None of the three fans could raise the temperature in our large family room more than one degree. I had about given up when I was in Lowe's shopping for something else. I spotted this fan there and took out my handy iPhone and used my FANTASTIC Amazon app to scan the barcode and find the reviews. Even though there were only two...I liked what the reviewers had to say enough to give the fan a try. As my toes are toasty and I'm pushing up my sleeves from warmth while writing this, I have to say that this fan beats the others by a mile. I haven't received an electric bill yet, so I don't know how much of a difference it's going to make from that spectrum, but I'm returning the other crappy fans and I may purchase another Holmes for the master bedroom if the electric bill doesn't show a noticeable spike. Incidentally, using the Holmes, we can set our thermostat in the family room up to 5 degrees less than our desired heat level and the Holmes does the rest.

update...April 2012: we have now used this heater through its second winter and it's going strong. What with the high cost of fuel, I purchased another smaller Holmes heater early this winter to use upstairs in the bedroom and office. My electric bill hasn't shown much of a spike, but the two heaters...together with blocking off part of the house with thermal curtains has reduced our oil consumption significantly. I can't say enough about Holmes and the two heaters we have!

We've been using this heater for about 2 years and it works really well. We live in a very old house (about 90 years) with no central heat. Just a wood stove that doesn't heat the whole house. We run this heater and it keeps the living room and bedroom comfortably warm. The auto shut off feature is great since we have large dog tails swishing around that could knock it over. (Hasn't happened yet but you never know.) The only draw back is that it's a bit noisy. We will be adding an infrared heater this year and hopefully we won't have to use the wood heat as much. All in all, it was a good purchase for us and we are pleased with it. I would recommend it.

My family and I have used this heater to supplement the heat in our main room for about a year now. It has worked great until last night (1/29/12) when I smelt an electric fire smell coming from it. We immediately turned it off, but anyone with this type of heater needs to be very careful with it. Only use it while you are near it or you may catch your house on fire.

Danby 13000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Reviews

I am so disappointed with this unit. Before I used it I borrowed my friends 4 year old Danby. Hers came

With two hoses. Hers worked great. I called Danby and asked why this one came with only one hose and they said they figured out how to make the same results with only one hose.

Anyway, I ordered it. It seems to have one major problem. I can't get it really cool. I put it on and hours later the room temperature is still the same. I put it on the lowest setting and it was cold next to the a/c but it did not project into the room. The only way I could get some coolness in the room was by putting a fan right in front of it to blow the cold air around the room.

I am trying to cool a big space but Danby said it can cool up to 500 ft.

I live in Southern California about 5 miles from the ocean and the hottest it ever gets here is mid 80's so I'm not talking about very high heat or humidity. The a/c should be able to cool under those circumstances.

This unit also comes with heat. Maybe the heat will work better than the A/C. It never goes below 48 in the winter and most nights it's in the 50's so maybe it will be able to handle that.

Overall pleased. I wish it was more programmable. I would like to tell it to turn on at 3:00 everyday and turn off at 9:00, but can't. Would have given 5 stars if it were more programmable. Produces lots of condensation drainage 10 gals per day. Rated for only a 500 sq ft room, but cools my 900 sq ft basement just fine although it runs near constantly. Purchased open box for $249. Thought I got a good deal for that price.

Best Deals on Danby 13000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner

I purchased this unit for a condo to move between the living room and bedroom. Central air would be preferable but this is a way cheaper solution for now.

This product is described as a portable. It runs on wheels and is easy to move on hardwood floors.

Where I have issues is in the window kits. I am happy that the kit fits both a patio door and a regular window. However, the panels are solid hard plastic with hard rounded edges-this means there is no seal of any kind against the patio door / window / frame and instead, a lot of gaps. (I had a portable AC 15 years ago that had soft edges to grip around windows).

As the kit uses plastic pieces that are of different widths (so that one slides into the other to create an expandable surface-think of a vacuum cleaner pipe that extends in sections) this means there are pretty big gaps around the edges of the narrower middle panel as well.

When running the unit as provided, I could feel air flow through all those gaps -a waste of energy because it means I am air conditioning the outdoors.

For now, I have put a lot of weatherstripping on the edges to fill the gaps... unfortunately, if I go from patio door to bedroom window, the weatherstripping is in the way if I want to adjust the panels.

The unit also uses a drain pipe or internal tank. The drain pipe is great... but where are you supposed to drain to? I drilled a hole through one of the window panels so I could run the pipe out onto the patio (this won't work for a bedroom window as it would be higher than the drain outlet on the AC unit). For the internal tank, there is a rubber stopper to keep it sealed (if you are not using the drain pipe). Unfortunately, there is no place to put this rubber stopper if you are using the drain pipe temporarily and want to switch back to the rubber stopper when you move the unit. For now, I have put it in a baggie and taped it to the back of the unit.

I have also noticed that the unit forgets its settings if you unplug it. It goes back to Fahrenheit and forgets the temperature setting.

So while it's billed as portable, the awkward window kit and forgetting settings every time it's moved make it a bit of a pain.

It's noisy but I expected that based on past experience with portable AC. It has a remote which is handy... the remote is a very basic, all-grey, thing and the battery compartment is screwed shut.

I'm not sure the AC unit is all that powerful regardless of how many BTU it's rated for. I think my old portable had much icier air coming out of it and I wish I'd kept it (I lived in a house with central air for a few years)-of course it's price tag was way more expensive.

All that being said, it's cheap for what it is and it's making my life tolerable during a long, hot, humid summer where I have to work at home.

I really like this small heater, which also has the capacity to be used as a cooker. Easy to use and quite stable, it's great for heating small areas.

Mine arrived from Poorfish in great shape and I would recommend it to anyone needing a small heater with great versatility. Though it's not the "easy start" version, a match will light it in a second.

My favorite heater. I have an older version of this heater which will only run at 9,000 BTU. No Oxygen sensor. You can cook on it or heat whatever or where-ever you wish. Use it on your boat, in your tent, or in your cabin high in the mountains, or just about any place that you wish.

Remember to keep a window or vent open because this thing will suck the oxygen out of the air.

And also remember that the edges of it get extremely hot.

Gas bottles last about 5 hours at 9,000 BTU.

Trust me, the low setting will be enough in most small room-size spaces in most situations, unless you are in the Arctic in a blizzard.

I use this in my portable 4 person ice fishing house, and it works great. It heats it up to t-shirt temperature after a few minutes. I usually have to turn it of so that I don't start sweating. Make sure to give it some room though because it will melt things. When I want some hot chocolate, I flip it over and set a kettle on top of it to heat up some water. It gets it boiling in a few minutes.

Works as advertised. Great for travel. However, you need to be careful that you do not remove it from the cup before you disconnect it. There is an internal fuze that turns the heater off if it gets too hot. Once that happens its shot.

I liked this product but nowhere on my box did it say that if you ever let it boil dry or get too hot, it would be PERMANENTLY disabled! Believe me, I looked when mine stopped working suddenly. I only found out what had happened when I went to buy a replacement. Works great but $15 plus shipping is a little steep for a product you can destroy so easily. How hot is too hot? Just a big caveat.

Best Deals on Travel Immersion Water Heater - Dual Voltage

Bought 2 one these, one for a friend. Mine died after 4 uses and hers after 2. Thoroughtly disgusted with this product and would not recommend it to anyone.

Honest reviews on Travel Immersion Water Heater - Dual Voltage

Cheaply made, designed with a self-destruct fuse that permanently kills the unit the first time it senses the unit is hot. Might fail your first use, might last up to a dozen uses, but it's designed to fail pretty quickly. I've bought at least three dozen of these various places during my years of constant travel, and they all fail, no matter how religiously you obey the instructions, don't blame yourself because THEY ARE DESIGNED TO FAIL.

I just think of them now as disposables. If one lasts two uses, I've broken even vs. the price of a cup of coffee. If it works the third time, I'm ahead in savings and convenience; if it lasts a fourth use, I've doubled the price I paid in savings over room service/Starbucks.

Like other reviewers I'd gladly pay much more for a reliable product that does its simple job without self-destructing, but quality US immersion heaters are no longer made. Another industry sold off to China.

One alternative if you're going to Europe/UK: buy a heater locally, you may find better quality, not all there are made in China...yet.

A bulkier less convenient option is to buy a $15-20 variable-dial electric travel 'hot pot'--they too are cheaply made in China, and you're boiling in plastic, but they last much longer than these coils, and with many models you can make soup, boil eggs, etc. See reviews there.

I ordered this a month ago or so. It came in and I assembled it that day. I figured out how to assemble it fine... other reviewers of this product on other sites said they had a hard time assembling it, so I was pleased to get over that hurdle. I put a fresh tank of propane on it and fired it up. No issues. Seemed to work great. I test ran it for about 10 minutes to burn off the coatings that are part of the heating element, then shut it down.

On another occasion very shortly thereafter I fired it up to test it and see how effective it was at making my deck more comfortable. Overall, the product did as I thought it would. It is effective within a few feet at turning a colder evening into one that is pleasant.

This weekend I had people over and we wanted to fire it up. This wasn't a test, but rather an actual use of the product. Totally could not get it to work. Pilot will not stay lit, no matter what. When it does stay lit, it will puff out within minutes. I once got it to trigger the main burner, but then it went out. Totally frustrating. This thing is brand new!!

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I used this for several months infrequently, and then found all of a sudden that it wouldn't stay lit. I did some troubleshooting and learned that it would stay lit if I held the flame from a propane fireplace starter under the thermocouple that is heated by the pilot light. I don't know if the problem is a failing thermocouple or a less than optimum heat pilot light flame; but whatever this shouldn't have happened with a heater that was still on it's first tank of gas !!!

I'll eventually find some time to contact Customer Service and see what needs to be replaced.

UPDATE: I found the time to repair this heater. I started with the assumption (thanks to the other reviewer) that the pilot light wasn't keeping the thermocouple hot enough. When I dis-assembled the pilot light assembly, I found crud in the air collection chamber. I cleaned out the crud (and just for the heck of it soaked the pilot light "bead" regulator in auto fuel injector cleaner), and now the heater works just like the day I bought it.

Because the heater is very well built and easy to disassemble and repair; I'm bumping my rating from 2 stars to 4.

Overall, the Endless Summer 233000 Outdoor Heater is a well designed and manufactured product. Assembly instructions are very clear, and with basic tools, can be assembled in about an hour. The "commercial" rating of this heater is evident in the quality of material, and the manufacturing workmanship. Follow the directions for igniting the heater, particularly when installing a new tank of propane. The heater worked perfectly for the first tank of gas, giving off a very even, comfortable circle of heat of about 12 feet in diameter. When used at a medium setting, the 20lb. propane tank lasts about 8-10 hours. When a second tank of propane was installed, a frustrating problem occurred. The heater ignited O.K. but would shut off after about a minute. Suspecting a bad tank of gas, I changed it for another tank, but got the same result. After several hours of diagnosing the problem, I discovered that there is a thermocouple near the pilot light that is heated by part of the pilot light flame. If the thermocouple does not "sense" enough heat from the pilot flame, it will shut off the heater for safety. Sure enough, the pilot flame was burning yellow, not blue, and the yellow flame is not hot enough to keep the thermocouple energized. A simple cleaning of the pilot assembly cured the problem. Some bugs decided to make the small orifice where the pilot flame emits from their home. the debris left by the bugs was enough to affect the pilot flame quality to prevent the heater from functioning. Note: since my original post of this review. I have had the same problem at least two more times, including a complete blockage of the pilot by those nasty bugs! Once cleaned using fine wire and compressed air, the heater works perfectly. Plan on ordering a second unit this year (2011) and buying some bug spray too!

This canvas log carrier is great. It's large enough and long enough (over 2') to hold enough wood for a fire that should last through the evening. It's also lightweight -which helps when carrying heavy wood. And finally, the closed design (rather than something with open ends / sides) helps to keep splinters and dirt from getting tracked through the house.
