My home is brick and was built in 1870 which means it has absolutely no insulation. I knew I couldn't stand another winter sitting in a drafty living room with blankets piled on. Whenever people would visit, I'd suggest they leave their shoes on because the floors were so drafty.

In September, I decided I wouldn't go through another cold and drafty winter so I started doing my research. I stumbled across the RugBuddy and it caught my eye. Like most people, I was a bit skeptical about making a fairly large purchase for an unknown item. After several weeks of debate I took the plunge. Several days later I received the product. It is a paper-thin film with heating elements running through it. I followed the simple instructions and within minutes turned it on.

Being a software engineer, I had to chart RugBuddy 's progress. I used an infrared instant thermometer laser and recorded that before turning on RugBuddy my area rug registered 62.5 degrees. After 1 hour it was 72 degrees. After 2 hours it reached 80 degrees. You instantly feel it on your stocking feet when you walk on the rug. After purchasing the RugBuddy, I now enjoy grabbing a pillow and lay on the floor to watch TV. It's like laying on a giant electric blanket.

I called the company to ask about electrical usage. They said that a panel to cover an 8x10 rug costs ~ .25/hr. in my area (New York State).

I hope this information proves useful to someone who is looking for an affordable solution to drafty rooms.

Our rug buddy arrived, while we were gone. Couldnt wait to get it going.. We started it as four of our grandchildren arrived. Soon our rug was wall to wall with people soaKing up the heat. It was a very cold day and worked great. We realize now that the furnace doesn't run as much when the rug buddy is on. I highly recommend it..

This company apparently is not much of a company. I pulled apart the bed to place this heating mat under it so the bed could be warmed at night without turning on the heat for the whole house. It requires a rug pad underneath (just happened to have one that fits, but you wouldn't know you needed one unless you check around) and a rug to go on top. When I opened it the box, the mat was folded and when I tried to unfold it, it was all stuck together. I assumed that there was a reason for it, but I called customer care to find out whether this is unusual. At 4:45 on a Monday afternoon, the extension for tech support (apparently they only have one guy who does this) did not pick up, and I left a message--pleading to get a call back, since I had to leave within the hour and did not want to have to put my bed back together that night, take it apart again once I heard back from them, and go through the whole mess again. Of course, by 6 pm, no reply. I will not buy anything from a company with a single tech guy who leaves before five on any give day. Too much hassle.

I have owned 3 of these heaters. They last about 2 years and effectively heat about 800 sq ft. The company has great customer service. I set the thermostat and leave it alone. My house is 1200 sq ft, open rambler. The sole source of heat was propane, which is expensive. The propane stove is set to come on when the temp in the house drops down to 64, which is at night. The heater is in the living room and keeps the house at 68 during the day when I'm gone. When I'm home I set it to 70. Do not set the Comfort Zone at the economy mode as it will run none stop. Set it at the middle mode and then it will be energy efficient and turn off when it reaches 1 degree above the setting and will turn on when it falls 1 degree below the setting. The Comfort Zone is more efficient and costs less to run then my friend's Edenpure Amish heater that cost twice as much. It keeps about 800 sq feet warm, the outer areas are cooler. I don't remember exactly what the cost per hour is but it isn't much. The power is on 24/7 from about Oct through April and costs about $20 a month compared to a tank of propane at an average of $500 a month. Before the Comfort Zone I was having the propane tank filled every month from Oct through April. $20 vs. $500, it is well worth the savings. I have a separate Comfort Zone in my sunroom which isn't heated. It comes on in the late evening and keeps the sunroom at 60 otherwise it drops to 44. I've had black, walnut, and cherry they all work the same. I recommend them to all my friends. The one drawback is while they keep the house at a consistent temp, they do not permeate the heat like propane does. Again $20 vs. $500, it is well worth the savings. Read the manual and clean it the way it says to so it keeps running efficiently. I live in the Pacific NW. Hope this helps.

[UPDATE TO THE REVIEW BELOW after using the cooker about 10 times (10 hours over a 5 month period) it has quit working. The fan runs and the display indicates all is well, but no heat is generated in the pot (and yes, it is an induction-compatible pot).]

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I couldn't find the power rating of this device anywhere on the web. I decided to risk buying it because the device looked well thought-out. The label on the underside rates it at 1500 Watts max. I measured around 1430 Watts (active power) and around 1530 VA (apparent power) using a Kill-A-Watt meter with the burner running at max power. It has 9 power settings down to a 100 W simmer.

In a large-diameter pan it brought 2 qts of water from room temperature to a boil in 10 minutes. Based on the pattern of the boiling activity the device seems to have an active heating area 5-6 inches in diameter, which is consistent with the recommended minimum pot diameter of 5 inches.

The 3-star rating is due to the small diameter of the active heating area. I bought this thing in part to cook down garden produce like tomatoes in broad shallow pans prior to freezing or canning, and it doesn't seem very good for that. I'm used to cooking with gas, and a gas burner spreads the heat across the bottom of the pan (much of it escaping around the sides, unfortunately). The induction burner focuses the heat much more precisely, so if you cook in smaller diameter pans it may suit you well. BTW, it has a fan that is not exactly whisper quiet but wouldn't bother me.

When I received an unpacked the cooker it was pretty much what I expected: Beautiful design, reasonable craftsmanship. The plastic bottom seemed a little bit cheap, the pull-out controls a bit flimsy but from there to the top: very nice, nothing to complain about.

Now, let's put the thing to work. First disappointment: It has no power switch. Yes, it's nice to see the word "circulon" lit up in red but the on/off switch does not turn the unit off completely, you have to pull the plug.

The next surprise came when I put it to use: Oh my, what a noise! Yes, I expected the buzzing sound typical for some induction cookers, but this cooker has a cooling fan that runs constantly and produces a noise level somewhere between a mixer and a modern hair dryer. All the time. No, it's not thermostat-controlled. Imagine using the nice temperature-hold functionality (which could do with a few more levels) holding the proper temperature while preparing a pot roast: You probably will feel like three hours under a hair dryer in a hair saloon.

Bottom line: Beautiful, fascinating, effective and so noisy that I sent it back the next day.

I had this burner for 6 months and just about completely stopped using the burners on my stove, but after 6 months the little thing that pops out in the front broke. (See the picture, this is where the controls are located and the screen tells you what the settings are.) First the screen went blank so you couldn't tell what the settings were and then about 2 weeks later, it quit working all together. Maybe something in the way we were using it caused it to break. I'm buying a different induction burner today with a different design (not one with little pop out controls).

Honest reviews on Circulon Infinite Portable Tabletop Induction Cooker

I've used two other portable induction burners, but this one has some great extra features: A detailed instruction book is the first great help. At 1500w, it has power to boil & fry very quicklya real time-saver. It's wider diameter allows use of 12 and 14 inch skillets in addition to smaller ones. The "Hold" temperature feature was what I selected this model for and does it deliver! I can set a constant temperature to cook, for instance, pancakes or steaks without burning them. No electric griddle needed. The Circulon Infinite 6qt Saute Pan I got to use with it has become my favorite cookpan. The Gift with purchase is an awesome value as well. This is a great induction burner to start with and keep!

I have checked out the unit to find that it works the way it was advertised

5 inch working unit in about 12 inch surface, and heats up the "magnet-sticking" cookwares fast.

I am not sure how many times it is going to work since I only tried it once at a store.

Best price seems to be $99.95 at Crate and Barrel (+shipping around $10~$15)

Too delicately designed for my taste that I did not purchase the item. If there will be a sturdier model with larger surface, I would buy it. Until then, I will do the fast boiling in my Chef's Choice tea kettle, fast braising in my pressure cooker, travel cooking on my travel butain burner, and slow cooking in my Crock-Pot slow cooker.

I purchased a small copper dish from an Indian store, so I could melt butter when I bake, and luckily it fits in the hole. My teapots also sit ok on it. However, the color changed when liquid dripped over, and doesn't come off with regular wash. I may have to buy the copper polish. Anyway, it's useful for my purpose, I didn't want to buy a glass warmer that would break. It's expensive, but all copper is.

I have a very large family room/kitchen open area. I have been closing the door to the rest of my house, setting the thermostat back to 62 and running the Duraflame in the FR area. The FR warms up to 69/70 and the rest of my home goes down to 62. About half-an-hour before going to bed I set the thermostat to 66. I was concerned about my electric bill, but when it came I was pleasantly surprised that it had only gone up $12 for the entire month. Even better my gas heating bill went down over $25 for the month. The cabinet stays cool to the touch and looks like a piece of furniture. I would definitely recommend this heater.

I ordered this a month ago or so. It came in and I assembled it that day. I figured out how to assemble it fine... other reviewers of this product on other sites said they had a hard time assembling it, so I was pleased to get over that hurdle. I put a fresh tank of propane on it and fired it up. No issues. Seemed to work great. I test ran it for about 10 minutes to burn off the coatings that are part of the heating element, then shut it down.

On another occasion very shortly thereafter I fired it up to test it and see how effective it was at making my deck more comfortable. Overall, the product did as I thought it would. It is effective within a few feet at turning a colder evening into one that is pleasant.

This weekend I had people over and we wanted to fire it up. This wasn't a test, but rather an actual use of the product. Totally could not get it to work. Pilot will not stay lit, no matter what. When it does stay lit, it will puff out within minutes. I once got it to trigger the main burner, but then it went out. Totally frustrating. This thing is brand new!!

I used this for several months infrequently, and then found all of a sudden that it wouldn't stay lit. I did some troubleshooting and learned that it would stay lit if I held the flame from a propane fireplace starter under the thermocouple that is heated by the pilot light. I don't know if the problem is a failing thermocouple or a less than optimum heat pilot light flame; but whatever this shouldn't have happened with a heater that was still on it's first tank of gas !!!

I'll eventually find some time to contact Customer Service and see what needs to be replaced.

UPDATE: I found the time to repair this heater. I started with the assumption (thanks to the other reviewer) that the pilot light wasn't keeping the thermocouple hot enough. When I dis-assembled the pilot light assembly, I found crud in the air collection chamber. I cleaned out the crud (and just for the heck of it soaked the pilot light "bead" regulator in auto fuel injector cleaner), and now the heater works just like the day I bought it.

Because the heater is very well built and easy to disassemble and repair; I'm bumping my rating from 2 stars to 4.

My dad had me order this on a whim. We wanted an outdoor heater so we could sit outside at night and all enjoy a glass of wine. Has worked great so far! As far as I know there were not set up problems...seems to have gotten put together fine. We bought this one because where we live we have a lot of wind and this thing holds up. The wind has ripped the shingles of my roof off but this thing has stayed in place. Love it!

Overall, the Endless Summer 233000 Outdoor Heater is a well designed and manufactured product. Assembly instructions are very clear, and with basic tools, can be assembled in about an hour. The "commercial" rating of this heater is evident in the quality of material, and the manufacturing workmanship. Follow the directions for igniting the heater, particularly when installing a new tank of propane. The heater worked perfectly for the first tank of gas, giving off a very even, comfortable circle of heat of about 12 feet in diameter. When used at a medium setting, the 20lb. propane tank lasts about 8-10 hours. When a second tank of propane was installed, a frustrating problem occurred. The heater ignited O.K. but would shut off after about a minute. Suspecting a bad tank of gas, I changed it for another tank, but got the same result. After several hours of diagnosing the problem, I discovered that there is a thermocouple near the pilot light that is heated by part of the pilot light flame. If the thermocouple does not "sense" enough heat from the pilot flame, it will shut off the heater for safety. Sure enough, the pilot flame was burning yellow, not blue, and the yellow flame is not hot enough to keep the thermocouple energized. A simple cleaning of the pilot assembly cured the problem. Some bugs decided to make the small orifice where the pilot flame emits from their home. the debris left by the bugs was enough to affect the pilot flame quality to prevent the heater from functioning. Note: since my original post of this review. I have had the same problem at least two more times, including a complete blockage of the pilot by those nasty bugs! Once cleaned using fine wire and compressed air, the heater works perfectly. Plan on ordering a second unit this year (2011) and buying some bug spray too!

I purchased this heater to warm my office at school...the nuns won't turn on the radiators until you can see your breath...inside the building! I have 13 foot ceilings in this office and it keeps it toasty. I've been very pleased with it's performance, especially since I paid only $9.95 for it! The fan feature comes in handy, as there is, of course, no air conditioning at school either! Great value, great product.

The product works as well as I expected it to, but it is a little louder than I had expected.

Best Deals on Holmes HFH105 1500-Watt Portable Electric Space Heater

These portable electric heaters are small in size but have given off ample heat when needed in a pinch in those early morning hours when trying to get kids out the door for school.

Since I was already familiar with the model HFH 104, that I sold over the summer on eBay, I figured the model HFH 105 would be similar. They both have the two heat settings of 1000 and 1500 watts and the power light plus a fan only setting. Also included in both models are the auto safety shut-off and the cord wrap.

The carry handle and cord wrap are easier to utilize in this model of the Holmes Portable Electric Heater, HFH 105. It is advised not to use an extension cord unless you absolutely have to, and with limited electrical outlets in the duplex we reside in I have to use extension cords through out the house. I have only utilized these heaters in the living room and for limited time in the morning and evening hours.

This is a compact design, but it resembles a flimsy version in a dark drab gray shade. The switch is located on the right side and turns from fan to low and high heat setting. This unit has been tested beyond the UL standards and comes with a booklet showing ten safety tips for use and care of the heater. This is similar to the other version. Basically the heaters should not be used in bathrooms or outdoors and nothing flammable should be near it or bedding or curtains. The cord should not be placed under a rug and do not insert any foreign objects into the unit.

The fan setting worked very well giving off some cool air and tricked my son into thinking heat was coming out. I was not as satisfied when making the purchase the first few days with the heat output compared to the HFH 104 unit. That model seemed to heat the room quicker and more efficiently. The pedestal base is flimsy on this unit and appears cheaply made. This unit was always placed flat on a surface intended for such items. There would never be any other items on the same table as the heater when it was turned on.

This is cheap, easy to carry, but smells like smoke when you first turn it on.

I use this in my office to keep warm (even in the summer -they set the thermostat at 68 degrees), and I love it. It is a little louder than I had hoped, but am getting used to it and it kind of drowns out the surrounding office noise. It works really well for my 10 x 10 ft office!
