I have purchased two of these heaters and encountered the same problem with both of them.

Granted, they are a low priced heater. I paid $19.95 (on sale) for each of mine.

Both functioned for a few months, being used only occasionally for limited amounts of time to heat my basement workshop.

The amount of heat produced; even at the maximum setting was very disappointing; for both units.

Worse yet; both unit developed the same problem.

They would temporarily shut down and then resume operating a few minutes later. Both the fan and heating unit would shut off, and then resume operating temporarily.

It was like a thermal overload was producing a temporary shutdown.

the end result was that very little "heat" was produced.

The old adage about "getting what you paid for" certainly applies to this heater!

Politely stated; it is a piece of junk!

Dont buy this as a heater. Maybe buy this as a fan.

This unit has a few settings: Fan, 500w, 1000w, 1500w.

You have to set it to 1500w to get any sort of heat, and that is just too high of a power draw for too little heat. And the thing sounds like a lawnmowers. The fan is hardly balanced.

Only buy this heater for its cold-war era nostalgia. For heat, you're better off with a tiny ceramic heater box.

This coffee maker is very inconvenient for an office. The filter holder does not attach to the coffee maker, it just sits on top of the coffee pot. So when you go to pour a cup of coffee, you have to remove the filter first. It may not seem like a big deal, but in our office it gets very annoying having to move it every time, and both the filter and the maker dripping on the table and floor.

Also, it didn't come with a coffee grinder like in the picture. Not a huge deal but another nuisance.

For how much I paid for it, I expected something flawless. I was much more satisfied with my 30 dollar coffee maker I had before

We needed an AC/Heat unit for a little over 400 square foot room in Southern California. It had to be 220 because our electric panel is maxed out. The unit cools nicely (installed on a 92 degree F day, room temp was 80 degrees F within 45 minutes and down to 77 degrees within an hour). For 8000 btu 115 volt it works surprisingly well. The unit was undamaged when receieved and arrived one day earlier than expected. I only turned the heat on long enough to test it so cannot comment on the heat efficiency.

I followed the book direction for replacement and this wick has burned evenly and put out good heat. Seems like this wick will last a lot longer than the original.

I ordered this since it came with a ceramic bowl. I couldn't understand why you would get the other Hot Shots when you can get this one for the same price and with a ceramic bowl.

HERE'S WHY...

This model is shorter than the other standard ones. You will NOT be able to get a standard 16 oz mug under it without hitting the drain spout. If you look at the description this one says it's

7.8 x 5.8 x 9.8 inches. The other ones that show a mug under it is:12 x 5 x 4 inches...definitely taller.

You can get a 16 oz mug under it but it will have to be a squatted one. Personally I think Sunbeam was stupid for making two different types. This is why I give it only two stars since it should have been in the description.

Update 1/10/13 I originally gave this two stars but have since changed it to three. I still stand by my original review about the height for 16 oz. mugs, BUT I didn't think it fair to judge the unit solely based on that. The unit itself works very well. It brings the water to an almost boil within a minute. Very fast.

I had bought one of these years ago for myself and purchased one for my oldest daughter two years ago from Bed Bath & Beyond for college and it was the hit of the floor (hot tea, hot cocoa, oatmeal). Hers along with this one I just purchased from Amazon (because BB&B didn't have them) came with a bowl which was nice for instant soups too. Heats up fast and with auto shut-off I feel that this little item is well worth the money. By the way, the one I purchased yrs ago is still working!! This item came within a few days and was delivered without any problems.

The Hot Shot is a fantastic product. It heats a mug's worth of water faster than anything I know of. I own two of these--one for home and one that sits at my office desk.

PROS: Heats water faster than a microwave. Priced right for its value. No cleaning needed (because you're only boiling water with it); takes up minimal space. The ceramic bowl is a nice addition, too.

CONS: The space between the water dispenser and the platform is not much more than the length of a standard coffee cup. If you have a big coffee mug (like me), you won't be able to fit it under the dispenser. It's odd that the space is not adjustable (or that the unit isn't just a little taller to accommodate travel mugs). The only other con, if you consider it one, is that it heats only water. You can't (or shouldn't) heat milk, soup, spaghetti-o's, etc.

Overall, if you want something that doesn't take up much space and helps make a quick cup of tea or anything that just requires boiling water (dehydrated soup, instant coffee, cocoa, oatmeal, etc.)... this is a great product. It lasts years and does exactly what it says it does, just like any product should.

I bought this heater/dispenser for a recent trip to Disneyland/Universal Studios. You can imagine how much food costs at those places.

It is small enough to fit well into a larger luggage bag. It will even fit fine in a carry on if you do not have too much to put in the bag. The ceramic bowl is attractive, useful, and sturdy. I even wrapped it and carried it on the trip with me.

The dispenser worked like a charm. I used it to make tea, cup a soups, oatmeal, and to rehydrate dehydrated camping food (chili, etc). I ate well and for a fraction of the cost.

This heater heats so quickly that I have started using it at home instead of the microwave for oatmeal, tea, and other things. Things come out less dry than when I use a microwave.

My only complaint is that the cups have to be pretty short for making hot drinks. I usually drink out of a 16 ounce tall mug, but even my 12 ounce and shorter 16 ounce mugs will not fit under the drip. Only my 10 ounce mug is short enough to fit under the drip. This is frustrating, especially since the heating capacity is 16 ounces. Other than that, though, this is a great and well priced product.

This is a great little water heater. It takes about 1 minute to have hot water for a cup of tea. It is much easier to make a cup of tea so I've been drinking more hot tea (a good thing). The Hot Shot is flawless and will do cup after cup after cup without trouble. I look forward to a version with a better water dispenser button, but the fact that the existing button is not cool in no way diminishes how cool it is to have a mug of hot water in under a minute. If you drink hot beverages, this is the thing for you.

Problem with them typically is that it is very very warm near the heater, and not so warm away from the heater. Uneven heat distribution actually makes the room less comfortable.

This heater does a better job by allowing you to split the heater into two halves. And yes, that does provide better heat distribution.

But so would having two small heaters spread out across a room. The only thing you save is the outlet.

I am not too keen on the point of it all. Perhaps it is easier to carry than two independent units for some?

It is a good heater though. Both parts are effective heaters in and of themselves.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I unpacked my new heater with much anticipation. The two heaters stacked look more like a speaker and take up less room than the Ambia side-by-side dual heaters that sits on a base. One control on the top heater determines if the top, bottom or both will be running. There is also a thermostat setting which is supposed to allow you to set both the top and bottom independently of each other, especially useful when using them up to 9' apart. This flexibility is perfect for our cold office.

When plugging the heater in you immediately get a thermostat display, which after selecting the auto mode, can be raised or lowered. The display on the thermostat said 77. After selecting auto mode I lowered the thermostat to 70 for each heater. For some reason the display jumps back up to a higher setting apparently what it believes is the current room temperature. The thermostat appears to be off by a number of degrees. The heater seems to work just fine in manual mode, but that means the heater is constantly running.

The book doesn't help with this issue other than to say if it's not coming on, you've already reached that temperature. I can guarantee it's not even close to 77 in here and wouldn't want it to.

I did raise the temperature setting on the thermostat to 75 and both heaters came on for a time. The thermostat display now says 82 and the heater hasn't come back on over a half hour later and it's been rather chilly in here for awhile. I've since raised the thermostat a few degrees and it's still not coming back on.

I'd give the product 5 stars for looks and the ability to use it up to 9' apart if it worked, but with the malfunctioning thermostat this is practically useless for what we need, hence the rating it received.

Amended 10/26. Was able to get a hold of customer service using the phone number on the instructions booklet. The number is listed a number of times throughout the booklet including calling regarding the 3-year warranty. I was told that this is the wrong number to call for the Ambia product line and the guy apologized but said he had no idea what number I should be calling.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This heater stinks. Literally. I guess there's a burn-in period with heaters in plastic housings, because I've returned other heaters for the same reason. It's a bit disconcerting. The fan is also pretty noisy when it's on high, but the offset for that is that this heater brings the room temperature up to comfort level very quickly.

The heater is easy to use, both as a tower and as a "stereo" heat source. It is true that the tower formation does not hold together super securely, but it works for me to be able to separate the heaters without having to give one of them a bear hug. This is a ceramic heater that will never reach the temperature necessary to combust paper, but it is still not safe to leave it on unattended, including overnight (I'm pretty sure that's the same for all space heaters the same warnings came with my oil-filled radiator and my infrared quartz heater).

First of all, it's easy to set up right out of the box. Even if you haven't read the instructions although you really should. :)

It's lightweight and easy to carry around. Also, it works fast. I felt heat the SECOND I turned it on.

It has a programmable thermostat. It tells you the current temp. of the room. You select the temp you would LIKE, and it automatically warms the room to that temperature, and then stops running. That feature is going to save us some money on our electric bill. Our other space heaters just run and run until we shut them off.

It's nice that you can separate the two halves of the unit. You can have one unit at your feet and the other near your upper body. Or you can share the heat with another person. The halves fit together easily and neatly.

If I had to pick a negative, I would say that there are a LOT of cords lying around. It sometimes looks messy to see all the wires. But that's a little nit-picky. This is a great space heater with lots of nice features.

When moving the heater from room to room, the top heater tumbled off and cracked against my right hand in an awkward way, giving my fingers a "stubbed" feeling for a little while. This was annoying when it was cool, but I can't imagine this thing falling off if the unit was hot. You'd need a pot holder to put it back into place.

Also, the one I received also seems to have a thermostat glitch. I turned in on in our bedroom last night where it was probably around 67 degrees. Our bedroom has a very high ceiling and is always chilly. The heater was set to 71 and would not kick in. I turned it up and nothing. I'll continue to investigate this issue and update if anything changes.

We have several tower space heaters in our home and this is by far the least useful. If I was purchasing another heater I would get an oscillating fan that has quieter controls. I found the control beeps on this heater to be loud, especially if you're using it at night when kids are asleep nearby.

I noticed the 1-star review about the blown fuse and hot wire. Maybe they should check the wiring in their house, because my fuse hasn't blown and like I mentioned, I had it running all night on high at 71 degrees.

I bought two of these to put in my kids' rooms at night. They have small rooms and I set the thermostat so that it turns itself on and off automatically. Be aware that when they are running they are hot to the touch. Now I can turn down the thermostat at night. My electricity bill has gone up, but my gas bill has gone down considerably and my kids stay warm at night. The best part is that now I don't have to sweat through the night!

I've had 3 of these heaters since early 2009. I've used them in a variety of settings continuous heating, temperature set, etc. After four years, I am a very happy customer!

Pro:

-Very efficient -heats a 10x10 feet room from 50F to 65F in 5 minutes

-Temperature setting -you can set a desired temperature and it will regulate itself around that temp

-Timer -you can set a timer for 1-7 hours in one-hour increments, so you don't have to wonder if you've turned it off when you leave the room

-Remote -it is a surprisingly important convenience, when I'm in bed I can start the heater a few minutes before I get up, and the room is nice and toasty. I hate getting out of bed into a cold room.

-Small footprint -the pedestal base is small, which makes an easy fit inside a closet during the summer (the bottom also disassembles easily if you really want to save on space)

-Safety -it shuts off if it is toppled over, and the front grill is not too hot (so if you or a child touch it, it won't burn the skin)

Cons:

-I suppose someone could make a comment about the appearance of the heater, but I usually don't care about the "beauty" of a product that does its job great

FYI:

-Sound level -this is not a silent heater. It sounds like a small fan, well because it has a fan inside.

Overall, great product that I'm very happy to recommend.

I enjoy smoking cigars outside after dinner and needed another heater to take the chill away. I own a tall standing patio heater which burns a lot of propane and generates very little heat ( especially if it's breezy ) and has no way for me to lower the height of it so it's pretty useless AND wastes a lot of propane. This heater however caught my eye and it is awesome !! Uses very little propane and is 100x more powerful then my tall free standing heater that i stopped using altogether now. Going to buy a second one for those really cold nights so i can sit down and have one heater on each side of me.

My guests out in my backyard were very comfortable. This was fairly easy to setup and use. One complaint to light it requires holding a metal valve down for 30 seconds. it HURTS after about 4 seconds so you have about 26 seconds of increasing pain in your fingers to get this sucker lit. I recommend an easier button be designed so the human finger is not poked so hard my a metal rod. Anyway once lit product was good

These heaters are terrific. This is the second I've bought and now makes working in the garage comfortable. They are easy to light, heat up very quickly and do exactly what you want them to do. When it's in the 20s, I can get the work area in the garage up into the 50s. Unlike the larger heater I have that's wall mounted, you can aim these where you want the heat and get very nearly instant gratification. Great product.

I have a 900+ sq foot basement with 8 ft ceilings. I've had this heater for about a week. I am absolutely amazed at how comfortable and warm the entire space is now. It's in the low thirties outside, and my entire basement with the new heater is in the low seventies, a good 10+ degrees higher than before. The unit is very quiet, clicks once in a while to regulate temps. So easy to use and set up. I'm just so happy that I actually WANT to go down to the basement now and hang out WITHOUT my scarf. The flame is very realistic my son and his friend thought this heater was a real wood stove. The box says pennies a day to operate, I hope that's true. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product it will improve your quality of life.

The only down side I had to buy a wine cooler so my wines won't go bad because of the higher temperatures. :)

This Stove packs a punch! It heats my 1200 sq. ft. Apartment great! Plus it looks very realistic! I have other family members who have eden pure infrared heaters, that work just as good, but don't look as good as this one. I love that all the controls are behind the door, so little one's cant mess with them. Very quality construction. The only thing I don't like, is the temperature control, it doesn't tell what temp it's set at, so I have to guess where to set it, but I can live with that one flaw, since it looks so good!

Got this for my garage to use in the winter I turned it on and BAMM!!! heat that warmed the area so well and it looks really cool, the flame control and light control are nothing but to entertain you but its great to look it and its not all plastic, the outside is a metal, only the legs are plastic. I hate that it is a "American" looking stove but made in China but its really nice 5 stars from me. I had been looking at some other styles but this one really caught my eye and I was not disappointed at all.

Got unit, put it in an 8X10 bedroom with door closed to heat for guests. Was on for an hour, using high button and thermostat turned up full throttle, absolutely NO change in temp. Has nice flames but didn't change room temp at all. Very disappointed. Got out small bathroom heater, the portable types. In 15 mins, the room was warmed. I have two other electric stoves, one purchased on amazon...an electrolog which isn't made anymore evidently, but it still works great. And also a plow and hearth brand small capacity that is charming. Thought an infrared would be a great new choice. Very disappointed as I am out shipping to get it here and probably to send it back. Awaiting response from vendor, but would highly recommend that you seek other brand. Other reviewer must have one that isn't defective, I certainly got a dud. Shipping back rate made no sense to return as price more than double that of original shipping paid to receive, vendor return address where return would be made they use different warehouses than their locale, and if it wasn't deemed deflective, then a restocking rate applies from vendor. This product is easy to setup out of the box, required little assembly and worked as advertised. This is my first experience with a Propane forced air heater (I have other kerosene space heaters) and I was pleased with the lack of smell while running but it doesn't seem as efficient as the kerosene heater of the same BTU output rating. Overall for the price I feel it was a good choice.
