Overall, I am happy with this air conditioner. It does a good job of cooling my entire 1Bdr apartment (which is about 500 sq. feet). You can set the temperature and set it to Energy Saving mode and it will turn itself on and off as needed. Very nice indeed.

A/C is fairly loud, but not as loud as Kenmore 8000 BTU it has replaced. It doesn't wake me up at night when operating on energy save/low fan setting, so it's tolerable.

Controls are a little bit confusing at first and you should really read the manual to figure out exactly how each mode works. The remote is also a bit of a letdown as it seems to work half the time.

Pros:

Star Energy Certified

Maintains Set Temperature

Cools 1Bdr Apartment

Price

Cons:

Fairly Loud

Confusing Controls

Temperature Display in Fahrenheit Only

I bought this unit for a couple reasons:

For back up air to use with my LP generator in a pwr outage (should pull 740 watts on the generator)

To help cool my bedroom so I can sleep in this heat! I work midnights and my central air is not keeping my bedroom cool enough for me to sleep during the heat of the day. Plus the backgound noise will be a nice sleep machine...

I'm a single female in my mid 50's, and I was able to install this unit by myself in approx. 30 minutes. Granted, I read the instructions ahead of time (downloaded the manual off internet), and had a good plan on how to do it correctly. I'm fairly intelligent & have good common sense and am used to doing things myself, so this might of helped too. My house is only 10yrs old, so no special circumstances to deal with like with a trailer, storm windows, or older home issues. It pretty much just slipped right in like the instructions said. It was a little heavy (50#), but I managed. It naturally tilted downwards (outside) at a proper angle for drainage and I was able to verify this with a level showing 1/3 bubble, as described in the instructions. The only weird thing was I was able to screw the top of the unit & top of the side panels into the bottom of the window, but the way my window frame is, the unit doesn't sit flat on the sill, there is a lip that coveres the bottom of the window, so I cannot screw the bottom of the panels in (holes at wrong angle on bottom of side panels like an "L" shape"). I need to cut a 1x2 piece of board and screw it to the sill, so I can screw the bottom of the side panels down tight. I'll get the that this weekend....as of now, I was able to tuck the side panels into the frame of the window and it is tight enough until I get to it. I cut some memory foam I had left over, and insulated the side panels and it is pretty air tight at this point.

I only use half the house (mstr bed & bath, Kitchen & living room) the rest of the house is guest room, bath & office I rarely use. The central air thermostat is back by the guest bedroom, and set this small unit to 77 in energy-saving mode, and it is keeping my part of the house nice and comfy! The remote control is set to the "I Feel" mode and I set the remote on shelf by my head in the bed, so the unit goes by the temp where the remote is (& my head), not the where the unit is, this is an awesome and clever option that I LOVE! In the energy saving mode, the unit turns on and off as needed. It is quiet enough that it does not wake me while I'm sleeping (this surprised me!), I can easily adjust the temp (if needed) while lying in bed by simply hitting the or + button on the remote contol.

This is one of the smallest 8k units I've seen, so it's easy to move around if needed.

Con's, and it's not a huge deal...is the filter is okay. It's kind of a nylon filter in a plastic frame, that you can take out and vacumme or wash. So I'm going to cut a thin foam "prefilter to put in front of it, to help cut down on dust to keep the air a little cleaner, and the inside of the unit a little cleaner too. The unit does have a "check filter" light on it to remind you to check the filter every month...so that's nice. Also, there is a lot of light that comes thru the vent the air blows thru...and also shows thru the side panels...I don't think it's an opening to the outside, just reflective light. As a day sleeper this was problematic. I like it dark & cold to sleep deep. I cut pieces of memory foam to cover side panels, and then ended up covering the window (and memory foam) with aluminum foil to block out that light. I could not do anything about the vent light (don't want to block the cold air vent). So I guess I'll have to get an eye mask.

I will update this review if I run into any issues with the unit, but it's looking and acting good so far. One of the best things I've purchased on line, and of course... shipping and service was awesome (as usual)!

Bought Unit about 6 weeks ago.

It comfortably cools a 12x20 room that does not close off from other rooms

Runs on standard 15 amp circuits.

This is the only company I could find with a unit that actually shuts off the fan when cooling temperature is reached. It's nice not to have the fan running constantly when the unit is on.

With energy saver the fan also slows when within a degree or two of set temperature, and then shuts down when set temperature is reached.

Fan on high circulates more cold air than our old old 12,000 btu unit

Noise is average, not too bad. Quieter than our old units.

Honest reviews on SoleusAir 8,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner , # SG-WAC-08ESE-C

Bought this unit at our local Menard's. Got the unit unpacked and installed in less than an hour. It is a very good air conditioner it blows out ice cold air anytime the compressor is running, and does a great job of air recirculation when the temperature is satisfied and just the fan is running. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat with no hesitation but if you're going to use this in a bedroom, there are a couple of things you light sleepers need to keep in mind....

This unit is LOUD. Even on the lowest fan settings, this unit is going to keep light sleepers awake for a while until they get used to the noise. Soleus got the EER up so high on this unit by using an oversized condenser and shoving lots and lots of air through it. The result is a loud noisy fan moving lots of air around, which creates lots of motor noise.

2 more drawbacks to this unit they used transparent white styrofoam to separate the evaporator ductwork from the outside, which lets lots and lots of outdoor light thru into the room you're using this unit in. If that wasn't enough, the LED's on the control panel are REALLY BRIGHT and in a dark room, it really lights things up. So, expect this to be a source of significant light if you need a completely dark room to sleep in.

The remote is weird, as are the controls on the unit. The other reviews have it right read the manual before you use this unit you'll be much better off.

So, it's noisy and lights up the room, but it is a great air conditioner. Time will tell if it's reliable.

I like this unit a lot. The remote works great, and it doesnt vibrate. However, after about two years the blower motor is starting to howl, meaning a bad bearing. I have called the technical support line repeatedly and have emailed. All I want is a replacement motor.

First the support number is only open 9 to 6 pm Pacific time. As soon as you enter #4 for their consumer division, you are immediately sent to voicemail. I left a message, and of course no call back. Emails seem to be facing a similar fate.

If you buy this unit, use it lightly because you will not be able to find anyone to assist if it fails. Go with a Frigidaire or something where you can get parts.

I ordered this heater from Amazon to have a little additional warmth in our home office during the chilly winter months. The heat output was far less than expected, and did not seem able to significantly warm the not terribly large (12x10) space. I was also a little disturbed when the unit was accidentally tipped one night and did NOT turn itself off. Fortunately I was in the room when this happened and no harm was done. The real problem though is the heater simply stopped producing heat after 3 weeks of very light use in one room. The fan would blow, but the coils would not heat, turning the device into a fan, rather than a heater. I'm definitely steering clear of Holmes heaters now while searching for my replacement heater. Not at all recommended.

I bought this heater in Oct and used it very little until it quit working in Dec. I tried contacting the company by Planetfeedback.com and through their website to resolve this issue, but apparently they don't see the need to respond to consumer complaints.

I can understand a product being defective, but when a company won't stand behind their products I won't continue to do business with them.

Since my electric bills have climbed through the roof, and since I live alone, I've recently turned to space heaters to save on utility bills. I've also found that radient heaters are better

than fan forced types. Initially I bought a CHEAP radient heater, and it heated the room okay. Except it sounded like a Mac Truck! It was so loud I could barely hear the TV!! I had heard Holmes brands were excellent, so I gave the Holmes radient heater a try and it's simply the best ever!

It heats exceptionally well, shuts off automatically when the room reaches the desired temperature, and, best of all, is amazingly quiet! I would highly recommend this heater above all others...

Honest reviews on Holmes HRH314 MaxFlow Radiant Heater

This heater sets new lows for quality. The fan blades actually hit the sides of the heater. It does have a thermostat, but when it turns on, it creates the most horrific sound I have ever had a piece of equipment make it sounds like a car wreck in process. To add insult to injury, at 1500w it does not even heat the room as well as 400W heaters.

I could not even find this model on the Holmes website. I can't blame them for not wanting to disclose they actually made it.

I can say without reservation that this heater is an absolute piece of trash and a waste of money. My Holmes HRH314 stopped working after two weeks; Holmes obviously has no pride in their products, as this heater is very cheaply made. I severely regret buying this product, as will you.

This is a quality stove that needs a outside combustion air fire box port. Optional fan with thermostat recommended. Using in 2000+ sf cabin and it has great aesthetics with excellent burn time.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

We have used this stove in a 2200 sq ft central MN home for about 2/3 of a heating season and are happy with it.

I too rec'd the T-stat and fan options. Although they don't move a lot of air away from the stove they do help significantly and will do so quietly at up to 2/3 output on the rheostat speed control.

It's a very modern design with secondary combustion, a tight seal, easy ash disposal and a nice door window that stays clean fairly well once the new paint and metal oils have baked off (2 weeks or so of medium fires).

We got it for $1000 (+tax) locally and moved it ourselves. It is about 500 lbs so get a good 2 wheeler with straps or 2 husky men to move it. You can easily pay about $2000 for a similar quality stove. It looks real nice too although its not in the catagory of a "decorator appliance". It can put out a lot of heat and hold a lot of fuel. It is capable of keeping our home warm for 8 hours in -F temps and have enough coals left to refuel without relighting (using a good seasoned hardwood like oak, maple, elm. etc.). Soft woods would be OK for less demanding needs (less hours of less output). Getting up midevening or relighting on chilly mornings gets to be a pain after a few years.

Its a XLG stove and I wouldn't put it into a situation where it heats less than 1500 sq ft. It would overheat it or smolder too much at the min. setting.

I wish the design had a T-stat bimetal inlet damper feature. It does not and is not available. I would consider that to be a very nice improvement.

BioSmart 1500PA 4 Element Breathe Easy Infrared Heater - 2013 Platinum Model
Customer Ratings: 2 stars

My experience has been different from the other reviewers.

I have already bought some of these in the older model and absolutely love them. Have saved me lots on heating bills,

I rarely ever have to use my furnace. Plus, I've grown to love the feel of infrared heat. It's definitely got a different feel to it.

The CZ Infrared and it's newer generation, the BioSmart, are still among the better ones on the market in my experience.

The main company's website is also the most comprehensive and not just a one-pager selling a generic re-branded IR heater with no company info.

Reason I bought this one is because it also has the all year round air-purifier where I can turn off the heater part and just

run it as a stand-alone air purifier. So it has functionality even in the summer. I have lots of pets, so really wanted that feature.

This one puts out even more heat than the older models I have, which, by the way, are still going strong and I still love them.

When I talked to the sales person about the possible fan issues that I read about, I was told that the fans have been replaced with newer

more full-proof versions and that, that issue has since been resolved. (That being said, I would stay away from getting one on eBay since you

may be getting the one with the problematic fan. I would stick with purchasing from the main company or authorized re-seller. Just sayin...)

So far I have had no issues and I've had this thing for over 4 months now. The heater is whisper quiet even on the high setting.

I'm not too worried about it lasting since the modular design makes it very easy to change out parts like the fan and the heating elements.

I like the fact that the design does not make it a throw-away like some of the other cheapish ones out there.

I did quite a bit of research before coming back to this one. The BTU output per wattage is way more than any other brand that I've researched,

making it the most efficient one on the market. Other than the fan issue that has now been resolved these really are a step above.

So far, it meets all my expectations.

Will update this review in a few months if anything changes.

One star is still too many. When your heater breaks down and it probably will you will not be able to reach customer service/tech support. They do not call back or answer email questions. You will end up with a heater broken and useless. You may get a season out of your heater.

First off I want to start off saying that I did not purchase this from Amazon. I bought this piece if Junk winter 2011. It took forever for me to get it. After about the second week, it started making that infamous humming, loud irritating noise. I still had the box so i sent the junk back and requested a NEW one. After a lot of jumping through hoops I got them to send me a new one, which took almost 4 weeks for me to receive. Would you believe that only a few days of using this wretched piece of CRAP, that it started with that crazy noise again? Unbelievable! By this time, I was so aggravated, the season was almost over so I just put it up and told myself I would deal with it the following winter.... Well, big mistake. I had completely forgotten about the warranty. So when I plugged it in to use this winter the sound was extremely loud. To contact customer support was a waste of time! To make a long story short, the motor went completely out and now it's just collecting dust. An absolute waste of money. This manufactured should be shut down and made to pay customers like myself money for the product plus pain and suffering! DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP!!! I see this is the 2013 version but I still would NOT buy....a crappy mess!!!

Honest reviews on BioSmart 1500PA 4 Element Breathe Easy Infrared Heater - 2013

Similar to others I had a fan issue within weeks of purchase and had to pay to return it. 3 months later I received a replacement. Cannot say that this product is really saving me any money but now it has broken again but this time it is the temp switch as I diagnosed it being an engineer. I called the Customer service line and it goes to an automated message that says most calls returned within 48 hours. FYI, it has been over 48 hours so I guess my simple request for a callback is not considered most calls. I just want the freaken part and I will fix it myself. Why can't they set up a parts purchase on their website if they cannot be bothered to return a phone call? Guess they are to busy with all the customer complaints about their products.

We bought this from a dealer in my church, an elderly man who researched many models. He told me that the fan motor would likely give trouble which he could fix. He found the fix to be new fan with roller bearings. After about 4 months of use the original fan did begin to sound lightly. This fall 2012, it got so bad that the fan motor gave out completely, smelling badly. I took it to my dealer friend who said the company knew of their fan problems and sent him a new fan motor with bearings. I have been running it nonstop since 6 weeks and it is working perfectly., now very pleased.

I have this radiant heater and 2 similar models. They are all noisy for about 15 seconds when they turn on. I suggest running it on low in small rooms so it does not cycle on and off. I buy this type of heater for 2 reasons. 1. I find that forced air heaters dry out the air, which irritates by allergies. 2. The biggest reason is that my cats LOVE laying in front of these heaters for hours. The heater gives off a glow which feels like you are sitting in the sun. I have been using them for years without any safety issues, just use common sense.

This unit does a good job heating up my small office (measuring about 10'x12') rather quickly, and its thermal control keeps the room in a comfortable temperature by turning the unit on and off automatically. The unit radiates heat over a pretty large area (with a small fan helping push the hot air out front). This means that it probably will do a good job keeping you warm in a larger space as well, as long as it's placed closeby.

My only complaint is the noise. The unit makes a rather loud rattling noise when its heating elements turn on, which lasts about 10-15 seconds. The fan is reasonably quiet in the low setting, but can be distracting when on high. I certainly wouldn't put one of these in the bedroom.

Best Deals on Holmes HQH307 Tower Quartz Heater

I really like the Holmes HQH307 quartz heater. I use it to warm up my master bathroom in the morning. I turn it on before I hop in the shower. By the time I get out of the shower, the bathroom is toasty warm and I can stand in front of the heater while drying off.

I went through several other heaters over a three year period before settling on this one. I've used two different ceramic heaters, one was a low cube and one was a tower. Neither one of those put out as much heat as I wanted yet they consumed a lot of electricity. Then I tried a parabolic heater. It was much more efficient, but the beam of heat was too narrow. It would heat a portion of my body too much and the rest not enough. It wouldn't heat the room at all.

I've had my HQH307 for about three months which is long enough to verify that it doesn't cost as much to use as the ceramic heaters did, yet it puts out a lot more heat. The internal fan is powerful, but it's also pretty loud. For my purpose in the bathroom, that's not a problem. The fan setup is well designed: It pulls air in from the top and pushes it out the front between the heating elements which heats up the whole bathroom rather easily. The heating elements rattle a bit during the first few seconds of warming up, but that is standard on quarts heaters. The rattle goes away almost immediately.

The lifting handle molded into the back of the case is in a good location and stays cool. Don't mistake the bar across the front for a handle because it gets HOT!! It's just there to keep the front of the heater off the floor in case of a tip-over. I like the manual controls on the top of the heater. One turns the heater to low or high and the other adjusts the variable temperature control. Simple and foolproof.

The Holmes HQH307 quartz heater is a great value and I recommend it without hesitation.

NOTE: I also own a Holmes HQH319U quartz heater which is about $20 more. It has the same housing and heating elements, but the fan is quieter and the controls are digital. You might consider it if you want a powerful and efficient heater that's not as loud.

Honest reviews on Holmes HQH307 Tower Quartz Heater

After having purchased (and returned) a handul of different heating units, I purchased this unit last year from Wal-Mart for around $50. My original intention was to locate an inexpensive space heater that would heat a medium sized room and, at the least, heat me but I continued to find units that didn't live up to their marketing slogans, including the oft praised mica boards. Having almost given up, I decided to limit my scope to something that would at least heat my general direction. This heater is perfect for just such a cause (whereas the other heaters couldn't even do that well; in fact, I spent all night waiting for the mica board to do SOMETHING and was sorely disappointed).

PROS:

Heats up FAST. Consistent. Definitely warms you. Pleasing glow. Auto shutoff for overheat or tipping. PERFECT for a single or two-person family.

CONS:

Limited heating area point and blast with this one, don't expect the entire room to feel heated. If the room is SMALLER, it can do that job, but a living room may feel lacking.

Loud You may not mind the sound of this unit but if you're working on something requiring acute attention, this may bug you. In fact, the unit isn't that loud and I personally find it to have a pleasing hum, but some reviewers claim it's as loud as a race track I'm sure they're being facetious.

I gave it three stars because it can't heat up a medium sized room. However, for its price, and for the consistently pleasing temperature it maintains, I would HIGHLY recommend this heater, ESPECIALLY for single and two-person households.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Holmes HQH307 Tower Quartz Heater

For the money this is a great heater. The heat is radiant and penetrating and provides more deep-down warmth to a room than does a ceramic heater. I like the glow, which reminds me of a woodburning stove.

The initial rattle is nothing to be concerned about and it does go away in seconds. However, I had a lesser, continuing rattle when the heater was sitting on a carpeted floor. I took a thin cutting board with an extremely hard plastic surface to set the heater on on top of the carpet. That cured it! I was careful to keep an eye on it and make sure that the cutting board was not getting warm, starting to melt, etc. The cutting board was not impacted at all. In fact, it stayed surprisingly cool despite the heat being put out, even on a high setting.

The manual controls do not bother me. There is no digital temperature reading, which does not matter to me either. I don't think the thermostats on economical heaters are that accurate anyway. The thermostat does facilitate cycling on and off throughout the night while I am sleeping, which is what I am really after.

If I do hear it running in the night, I briefly think "aah, heat" and go back to sleep. If I do notice the glow, I briefly think "aah, nightlight" and go back to sleep.

There are more elaborate heaters out there for more money, but for what I have spent I am getting good, penetrating heat, and thanks to my cutting board it is rattle-free in a carpeted room.

Just got this little 12v. pot for heating water, soup, etc. and didn't expect much since I had a recent bad experience with a 12v. coffee maker that, after waiting over an hour for something to happen, didn't work at all. Well, I was pleasantly surprised! This litle unit is well-made and has some very nice features, such as being able to remove the pot from the base for easy cleaning. I also like the fact that, as well as an "on" light, the pot lights up with a white light to let you know that it is seated correctly on the base. It also has a nice safety feature in that it will shut off if there's not enough water, so it won't "burn dry." Best thing, though, is that it really does work! It does take longer with 12v. units, but that's to be expected. However, in less than half an hour the water was bubbling merrily away! I am very pleased with my purchase and would definitely recommend it.

I purchased this unit as my wife and I love the "coffee on the go" mode and figured to save a few bucks in the long run on the expensive Convenience Store drinks. So far, and that includes three vehicles, we have blown the fuse every time that we plug the RoadPro into the cigarette lighter. I am approaching half the cost of the unit in replaced fuses. I'm not saying that the unit will not work, in fact I believe that it will do what it claims if you can get the proper power to it. For many vehicles, it will require a heavier wire to be routed from the battery to a seperate 12 volt outlet. This takes the convenience away and adding new wiring to the vehicle adds cost to the use of the RoadPro.

Best Deals on RoadPro 5027S 12V Smart Car Pot

Being an over-the-road driver I carried one of these for awhile in order to make coffee and hot cereal. It actually heats pretty well, and is a much better product than the previous one I had. However after about 3 months of 3-4 times a week use, it started to leak through the base and into the heating element. After that it quit completely. As this happened with 2 of these in a row, I tend to believe it's a design flaw. For occasional use, it's probably well worth it, but if you use it regularly, expect to replace it every couple of months.

Honest reviews on RoadPro 5027S 12V Smart Car Pot

What a treat to have hot tea or instant coffee on long road trips. Holds enough for 2 cups of your favorite brew. Takes about 15 minutes for hot water, 20 minutes to boil. Very handy.

For a fairly expensive space heater that promises "infrared" techonolgy, I kind of thought I was going to be toasted from head to toe. It claims it heats solid objects not the air. True, but it heats only directly in front of the heater. It has no range, or radius around the heater itself. Thus, if you are sitting in a deck chair smoking a cigar on your porch during a northest winter (which is why I bought the item), your legs will be toasty, but from the waist up you're still freezing. It needs to be coupled with the same type of item suspended from some fixture to warm your upper body.

I BOUGHT THIS HEATER FOR MY GARAGE WHICH IS 20 X 25 (500SQ. FT.)AND IN THE DEAD OF WINTER IN A UNINSULATED GARAGE IT HEATED THE PLACE IN 15 MINUTES TO 70 DEGREES. THE FOLLOWING YEAR AFTER I INSULATED THE GARAGE IT TOOK 10 MIMUTES, BUT BEING INSULATED IT RETAINED THE HEAT MUCH LONGER . SO EITHER WAY IT WORKS GREAT AND IT HAS IT'S OWN THERMOSTAT , KEN FROM PA.

I don't think it will save you any money. All depends on your situation of course. Not working that good for us. Blanket works better. Have a blessed day. The unit is very noisy and I'm a little hard hearing. A, what did you say?

Product works as advertised, but is much noisier than expected. It has a fan that turns on every few minutes to draw air through the system to check room temperature. The fan is very noisy. Aside form that, it's a nice little unit. I bought it specifically to use in the bedroom. I will probably sell it because it's so noisy, it keeps me awake.

Update 5/29/13: Member "Coug Moog" in comments to my original review turned me on to the fact that price has drop drastically at some sources on this model all the way down to $298. At that price there's no reason not to grab this more powerful unit over it's 10,000 BTU bretheren. Now that this unit doesn't cost an arm and leg over the 10K, I'll probably never buy another 10K again. I'm also upgrading my review to 4 stars as well. The 12K units I operate have served well. Since they now cost virtually the same as a 10K that's a darn good value.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original Review Text Titled "Not the one to buy unless you have a little window" and given 2 stars:

The 12,000 BTU unit is a bad choice for most people. The smaller 10,000 BTU unit is 33% less in cost and typically much more reliable. The bigger 15,000 BTU unit is not that much more than the 12,000 unit.

So why would you pay so much extra above the price of the smaller 10K unit, yet stop short of going all out for the 15,000 BTU unit? Only one reason window height. Beyond 12,000 BTU the case gets much larger, which means it won't fit in some window styles.

Price not important? Measure your window, and if it fits get the bigger 15K unit.

Price important? Then why would you pay so much more for this one over the 10K unit?

I've bought and run this size, but only in special cases where I was restricted by window size and had a really large room to cool.

Also to consider... here's the review I gave on another model that is relevant to this one:

------------------

Between family and rent houses I put all types and sizes to the test every year in the scorching Texas sun. Here's my experience:

If you want a solid window air conditioner, it really boils down to two choices: Frigidaire and LG. The current "sweet spot" on reliability/price/economy is the 10,000 BTU unit regardless of make/manufacturer.

Recently they've been making 12,000 & 15,000 BTU 110V (normal plug) units.

-The 12000 BTU truly is 20% stronger, but you pay 50% more here on Amazon.

-The 15000 BTU is a snowball tossing beast, but it's in a larger case that may not fit your window (height-wise) and doesn't have a long history on the market so we don't know how it will do long-term

LG Pros The 10,000 BTU LG is my "workhorse". Best value. Run them till they fail in 4 to 7 years, then swap `em out for another.

1) Better warranty (but really, who cares when it breaks because you're sitting there sweating)

2) Typically last an additional 2-3 years over other brands

3) An LG rarely just stops running it will degrade slowly over a season

4) They are more tolerant of neglect (e.g. dirty filters... can't rely on tenant to care for your stuff)

5) Better withstands being placed in harsher environments (direct sunlight, restricted airflow)

6) Lower "lemon" rate

Frigidaire Pros For family I prefer to run 12,000 & 15,000 BTU Frigidaires. They are a little nicer, and I consider it worth it even though they always break sooner. (Value and reliability aren't as important, but I do have to compensate by keeping a new boxed spare around because they always fail at the most inopportune moments. Most people can't do this.)

1) A little nicer looking

2) Better features

3) Quieter

4) Slightly easier installation

5) Circuit surge/drain on startup seems significantly less (think lights flickering when compressor comes on)

Other parting thoughts:

1) A thing to know about newer units: To obtain the higher EER (efficiency) ratings, they use finer design on heat exchanger fins. For the non-experts, this means smaller little spaces that get jammed up with dirt/mold/whatever resulting in a clogged/filthy/poorly operating unit much-much faster than your parents' old units. Appliance repair stores can service your window unit every year (clean it of filth) that will extend life by at least 2 years and sometimes much more. Of course this costs anywhere from $50 up, and the units are cheap, so it's your call whether to service or toss it.

2) The 10,000 BTU Frigidaire here on Amazon is a good buy w/Amazon Prime shipping. For other higher BTU models, as of this writing you'll be paying more but also know that right now with the national heatwave most box stores are sold out so you may not have a choice.

3) Something this heavy is a risky ship (versus store pickup). It might be shipped wrong-side-up, or dropped, or whatever. It's a risk you'll run so do so knowingly. (I seem to have pretty good luck w/Amazon shipped items.) The risk is offset, however, by advantages of buying from Amazon (store would take forever, you'd have to load it and bring it home, have to have a vehicle large enough to carry it, etc.)

4) Clean. Your. Filter. Every. Week. It will keep your little ice machine healthy.

5) Different stores have different models from the same maker. If they are made in the same year, it doesn't seem to make a difference.

6) Tempted to go cheap like a Haier? Don't.

7) Tempted to buy a 6,000 or 8,000 BTU model? Don't. Get the stronger unit. It will cool down the room faster. It will not need to work as hard as a weaker unit and last longer. It is built with some stronger/better key components.

Good luck and happy cooling.

UPDATE We've had this AC for 2 years now and are still loving it. No problems whatsoever. Still cools like a champ, and we use ours a lot. This year, we even used it through the winter, during those uncharacteristic HOT winter days. Still love the thermostat remote too. Very happy we took the time to hunt down this specific model.

And now, back to the original review....

I needed to replace a 10 year old 12,000 BTU Kenmore AC and thoroughly researched my options before zeroing in on this Frigidaire. The clincher was the unique remote control -it has a key feature that no other AC's have, including other Frigidaires.

Thermostat & Automatic Climate Control Built Into The Remote

Let's be clear -most modern AC's come with a remote that turns the temperature up or down, but that's NOT all this Frigidaire's remote does. It actually controls the climate via it's own thermostat and direct communication with the AC itself. The remote also has a digital readout that displays the actual room temperature at the remote itself. This is significant, because most AC's have a thermostat in the AC housing. But this Frigidaire has a thermostat built right into the remote control, which means the AC will cycle on and off based on the temperature at the remote, instead of at the AC unit. I hated how my old Kenmore would click off the compressor because the thermostat thought the room was cool enough, yet where I was sitting, was still hot and muggy. Now, with this new Frigidaire, the compressor keeps running based on the temperature on the remote's digital readout. Every few minutes the remote sends a signal to the AC unit, telling it what the temperature is; and the compressor adjusts, based on that readout, keeping the room a constant, consistent temperature. This feature alone sets this AC apart, head and shoulders above the rest. And after just a few days of using it, there's no way I'd ever want an AC without this feature from here on.

More About the Remote

Other than the awesome feature mentioned above, the remote can turn the AC on or off, set the temperature, timer on, timer off, sleep mode, auto fan and energy saver. It's also a cute little thing that feels good in my hand. It's about the size of a small cell phone and the rubberized buttons are well laid out and easy to use, even for those with poor eyesight and dexterity, like me.

Eco-Friendly

The power surge my old Kenmore caused would literally make the lights dim whenever the compressor kicked in. On really hot days, that sudden power drain would often trip the circuit in my fuse box, knocking the power out. But this new Frigidaire is so energy efficient, that I barely hear the compressor kick in, and the lights dim for just a fraction of a second. So the power drain compared to my old Kenmore is almost nonexistent. I feel confident that when we go through another round of brown-outs here in California, my Frigidaire will keep running even when Edison throttles down everyone's kilowatt usage. Even better, the Electric Company is giving me a rebate for upgrading to a new "green" AC; how COOL is THAT?!

Cooling Powerhouse

There aren't too many 12,000 BTU air conditioners out there; any higher in BTU, and you can't use a standard 3-prong wall outlet. So I was happy to find this 12,000 BTU replacement. This Frigidaire cools my 650 square foot room without a problem. Actually, I have yet to run it higher than Low speed, and at that setting, it's been cooling off the whole room quite quickly, and keeping it at a constant temperature. I know it's early in the season, but it's already gotten hot and muggy here in Southern California, so I've had plenty of opportunity to put this new AC through its paces already. But thus far, I'm quite confident this Frigidaire can more than handle the sweltering heats that are coming.

Clean Air

I have a couple different air purifiers, but it's cool that this AC also has a built-in ionizer. With all the air it blows around the room, it's good to know that I can turn the ionizer on with the push of a button, and minimize the dust flying around. For those of us with respiratory problems, this is a HUGE Bonus!

Installation

If I could find an AC that does all this one can, plus install itself, then it would be the perfect AC! Short of that fantasy, this AC was well worth the setup. I had help with it, and 2 hours later -voila -we were enjoying the reward of cooler air. The unit itself was a little lighter than the Kenmore I was replacing, but let's face it, it's difficult to balance a big, heavy, square object on a windowsill. We got the job done though, with no real headaches or problems. The side louvers were easy to attach, and the screws, brackets and weather stripping were all self-explanatory.

QUIET!

Some other reviews had me concerned about the noise level of this particular unit, but I have to say, this Frigidaire is about as quiet as an AC gets. I have a smaller 5,000 BTU AC in the bedroom, and it's much louder than this 12,000 BTU. My old Kenmore was waaaaaaay louder than this, even when it was brand spanking new.

Bottom Line -Frigidaire really hasn't done themselves any favors by describing and marketing this AC so poorly. They should be punching up what's special about this remote (the built-in thermostat,) how it interacts with the AC, and why that unique feature matters to consumers. It's truly one of a kind and that feature alone squashes the competition in my book. This AC is so much better than it appears, at first glance. Thankfully, I was very thorough in my research, both online and in store, and I doubt you'll find a better AC for the money than this Frigidaire. I fully expect this AC to work flawlessly for years to come; and because I'll have it for many years, I'm glad I took the time to make the right choice.

New unit was very noisy. Rather than return it, it was easier to it take to a local warranty repair center. I kept Amazon in the loop just in case, and they were gracious in offering to exchange the unit if I chose not to have it repaired.

The repair center diagnosed the noise as a bad bearing in the fan motor. The blower motor was replaced, and the unit is OK now. The motor being bad right out of the box suggests that these units go through no testing at the factory, and quality control is low.

After the repair, the overall noise level is about average which is OK with me. Most of the sound is the air movement swish of the blower. There is very little compressor sound when it is running, and a light "clunk" when the compressor turns off.

This 12,000 BTU unit is the same physical size as the 8,000 BTU Frigidaire unit I am replacing. For what it's worth, the blower in the 8,000 BTU unit lasted two seasons. That might explain why Frigidaire has only a one-year warranty (which is really one season) on that part of the unit. Perhaps Frigidaire is trying to take over Haier's role as the industry purveyor of cheap appliances.

I later found out that LG has a five-year warranty on everything -no need to buy an extended warranty. Frigidaire has five years only on the compressor, one year on everything else. The repair guy at the warranty repair center said he has seen only two LG units in the five years he has been there.

Having gone through multiple window units, I'll offer the advice that, in order to get the high EER ratings, these things (all brands) use delicate fins on the heat exchangers the design and spacing of which easily accumulate micro dust particles in spite of the filter. The moisture on the fins along with the dust encourages the growth of mold if the fins are not meticulously cleaned. But the delicate nature of the fins along with the presence of the electronic controls means you can't do like the old days where you took the thing out of the chassis and washed it out at the local car wash. Cleaning the fins now requires something like using a strong shop vac and a tooth brush to carefully comb fins clean at the end of each season.

In other words: It might have a high EER when you get it new, but it doesn't stay that way for long. It's too bad the EER is only for brand new in the lab, and no thought is given to the EER over a typical lifespan of the product.

Honest reviews on Frigidaire FRA126CT1 12-000 Btu Window Air Conditioner W / Temp

==================

Update number one: The remote sensing is, for lack of a better word, a joke.. Yes, it uses IR light to talk to the unit, SO, as long as the remote is pointing directly at the unit and there is nothing obstructing the path between the remote an the unit, then it works fine. BUT, and this is a huge but, in the REAL world this rarely happens. I still give this unit five stars but come on Frigidaire, this is 20th century technology used in a product of the 21st century. Get with the times.

==================

I already have an older version of this model, and was eager to get this one. I'll not bore you with a ten thousand word essay like some feel the need to write, but I will tell you in as few words as possible that this is a good product and why. I got this unit to put in the opposite end of my home so it would take some of the work load off of my older unit, which is still working like a charm.

Size and weight for this BTU amount is good/great. One person can install it but I do recommend two. I'm going on 56 and I was able to install it by myself but don't let my results influence you. Being 115 volts instead of 220 means you don't need an electrician to install wires and an extra circuit breaker. The extra long power cord also eliminates the need for an expensive extension cord.

As far as operation, it's easy. Just put it in an window, plug it in, and turn it on. Remember this though. It is 110 volts and an energy efficient unit, SO, it will NOT produce icicles within thirty minutes of being turned on, BUT it will cool down your room and in a not so slow fashion. Plus, it will not require you to take out a second mortgage to purchase it and also to operate it.

Within an hour of installing this unit, the entire house is cooler and the humidity is MUCH lower. Thus, it is very comfortable now in all parts of my home, and also most of the time now neither unit is running so I think that two units will actually save electricity over running just one. I hope this makes sense. I'm old, and heat doesn't bother me but HIGH humidity does. So, I actually run the window units to be more of a dehumidifier than an actual cooling system. The best part of a window unit is that you get both for the price of one. Just a dehumidifier alone will cost more than a window unit.

As far as sound. This unit is not very loud but let me pass some important information along. If you suffer from hearing loss, as I do, then even the smallest amount of "background" noise will be very distracting and thus, be very annoying. For me, that is not a problem, as it helps me sleep, but while watching TV, you will find that you have increased the volume quite a bit, each time the unit turns off. ;)

I have recently received this product. Installed it in my bedroom facing down the hallway. When i come in at night after work, I walk into a cool house from just this one a/c unit working. I have over 1800 sq ft. and this a/c unit does a fantastic job of cooling this area. I love the timer and sleep timer. The remote is a bonus. Was an easy install. Just myself and a neighbor. A little loud when you turn up the fan all the way but not to bad. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new a/c unit.
