Shipped extremely fast! Looks amazing, however is much smaller than I had anticipated. I had been hoping for the price for it to be bigger. Very warm! Heats room quickly! Downside is that if you can't fit it flush against the wall you will see the created fire "crackling" from behind it against your wall. Also I would recommend placing it on a hard floor or creating a hearth for it to stand on. Fireplace tilted forward on our plush carpet, had to adjust this by propping the front end with a few pieces of cardboard which is hardly noticeable, but not great for if you have little ones, as they can still easily pull it over onto themselves. Overall very pretty.

We just had a record-breaking heat wave. I live in a poorly-insulated house that becomes hot in 85-degree weather, and we hit 100. (Just north of Seattle, WA.) This A/C did a great job of cooling two small rooms (cool one room, move the A/C to another room, cool that one, then back again, for about a week).

Some observations:

1. You MUST vent a portable A/C out a window or into a drop-ceiling, or you just pump the hot air back into the room.

2. Portables seem to work better when elevated (hot air rises, so this helps keep the "convection effect" going by getting closer to the hot air).

3. It's a little noisy. Adding rubber gasket material to the vents reduces the noise a lot by damping the vibrations.

4. An A/C's BTU rating must match the room size, or the unit simply won't work right. This is true of all A/Cs, and seems to be somewhat critical for portables.

5. It acts as a dehumidifier, which means that you have to drain the water tank regularly or the unit will shut off until you do. (An indicator light tells you when you need to drain the tank.)

So, for those who need to cool small rooms, I think this is a good buy. It has been for me.

I just put it into the garage to store until next year. This year I used it in one of the larger rooms because I installed a window a/c in the smaller room, and it did a decent job of keeping the place cool. So far I've had two seasons of trouble-free cooling, so I'd say I got my money's worth. I may buy one more next year for my studio.

So, I live in a studio. Not very big at all. You would think this air conditioner would be able to handle keeping it cool. Well, not so much.

Regardless of how low I set it, or how long I kept it running, it kept my studio at 78 degrees. It was actually a better deal to shut it off, open the windows/door and let the air circulate. It actually got cooler in there once I did that.

Moreover, the hose you connect to the window vent is an eye sore, and isn't flexible enough to let your place the unit somewhere convenient. So you end up having to leave the A/C unit in the middle of the room instead of neatly in a corner or against the wall because the vent hose doesn't allow otherwise.

This is pretty much the worse purchase I have made in a LONG time. Worse of all, it doesn't even make sense for me to return it. The seller charges as 12% "re-stocking fee". Moreover, I would need to carry the huge 70+lbs box up and down stairs to get it back to my work so UPS can pick it up. The box is very flimsy once you remove the nylon ribbons that it comes sealed with, and doesn't really allow you to transport it without spending some money on repackaging.

So yeah, I'm stuck with a $300 70+lbs paper weight. Good times.

[EDITED 07/30]: So I was contacted by the seller (CompactApplience) and their conclusion was that my studio was too big for the 8,000 BTU rating. They actually let me return just the A/C unit without having to worry about packing all the awkwardly-shaped pieces, and reimbursed me for everything, including shipping. Although I've decided NOT to try a different unit with a greater BTU rating, I'm leaving this review here so that hopefully people looking into buying this or any other unit are aware of the importance of considering the size of the room you're trying to cool down when you choose the unit BTU. I was remotely aware of that, but didn't look too much into it, and you saw what happened... Luckily for me, the seller handled the situation superbly well. A happy ending, after all. :)

OVERVIEW

I live in a 300sq foot studio with a 15 foot ceiling and a south-facing bay window. My apartment gets hot when it's sunny and is almost always damp/humid. I got the Koldfront because it was the only unit that would fit in my available surface area: on top of my kitchen cabinets. I already had ducting running through my cabinets to vent my over-range microwave, so I popped the Koldfront on top of my cabinet and tied the exhaust into my existing duct work.

It takes the Koldfront about 5-7 minutes to cool my apartment down to habitable from digustingly hot. Technically, I think my space is supposed to be a little too big for this machine, but having it blow cold air across my ceiling seems to do a good job of displacing all the hot air, and since it's located high up, it should be sucking warm air out as it cools the condensers.

I ran this machine for a couple of days at ground level and was less than excited about it's potential, I could actually feel a temperature differential about two feet off the ground between cold and hot air. But moving it closer to my ceiling made all the difference. When it was on the floor, all it did was move air and maybe cool a little bit. Now that it's at ceiling height I'm actually getting chilly.

FAN SPEED

There are three fan speeds: high is pretty loud, and low is still relatively loud. I've gotten used to it pretty quickly though, it pretty much acts as white noise, dampening external sounds.

MODES

AC, Dehumidifier, and Fan are the available mode settings for this machine. I'm happy about these options since you won't always need/want the condensers coming on and off, and you can dehumidify when it's cold out without turning on the AC.

WATER RESERVOIR

The koldfront is supposed to vent humidity out through the ducting, but has a water resevoir for high humidity situations. Unlike some machines, the reservoir isn't a bucket that you can remove from the machine. To drain the reservoir, you have to pull out a little plug at the bottom of the AC, which is about two inches off the ground. That doesn't give you much room to maneuver a drain pan. Fortunately, at 50LBS, it's not too heavy to put in the bathtub and let drain there. The lack of an accessible reservoir is a definite con though. Apparently the Koldfront is made to be able to hard-wire a drain, so that may be an option for some. I ran my machine on and off for a couple of days in San Francisco and it drained something like a cup of water. I don't know the total size of the reservoir, but the drain indicator lite hadn't turned on yet before I drained it.

THERMOSTAT

I've read some reviews complaining of an inaccurate thermostat on the KOLDFRONT, but mine seems to be about spot on.

REMOTE AND LCD PANEL

Don't lose the remote, or if you do, hope you had your Koldfront set exactly how you want to have it because there's no way to change settings without the remote. The remote itself is pretty intuitive, with power, up, down, mode, fan speed, Celsius/Fahrenheit, timer, and cancel buttons. And it comes with batteries. The LCD panel reads the ambient temperature in either Celsius or Fahrenheit until you press the up or down button on the remote, in which case it reads your preset temperature preference. There's a blue/green/yellow LED that indicates whether you're in AC/dehumidifier/ or fan mode, respectively. The information on the LCD is large enough to read from several feed away.

ASSEMBLY

Like most appliances, the Koldfront came with a cardboard cover over the packaging and plastic ties keeping it on. You just cut the ties and lift the cardboard cover off the machine. Inside, there's just a couple pieces of Styrofoam, the AC, and the window kit, plastic duct, instructions, remote, and two AAA batteries for the remote. The AC itself doesn't require any assembly, aside from plugging the duct in. The drain plug on mine had popped out, so I just twisted it back into place. There's a little more involved in assembling the window kit, but the instructions are pretty good on how to get that together. All you need (if your window is the right size) is a phillips head screw driver. The window kit is held into place by the weight of your window and doesn't need to be screwed into the window frame at all.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I'm happy with my Kodlfront. Mine arrived fully functional out of the box, and raising it to ceiling height has made it a lean, mean studio-cooling machine. It's a little bit bigger than I had guessed from the picture, but it's still smaller than most, and fit where I needed it to. It's loud, but inexpensive and has a built in thermostat and remote. Draining it is going to be a hassle, since I've moved it out of easy reach, but there's nothing else on the market that would have worked for me, so four stars for working properly, but not five, because of the lack of controls on the machine, the lack of a removable reservoir, and the loudness of the fan.

Listen up, everyone!

When buying an air conditioner you MUST make sure that your room is the adequate size for the unit that you are buying. It seems that a lot of negative reviews are due to the following: Too much room, too little BTUs. It is the same with gas mileage on a car. You can't expect to get 35 mpg highway while driving 70 mph with a fully loaded car. However, most portable air conditioners overrated their cooling power by 50% (see a Kid's review). So, when you buy an AC always buy 50% more BTUs than is recommended (8,000 BTU recommended unit should be 12,000 BTU). With that said I would recommend this Koldfront AC unit.

I bought the Koldfront 8000BTU portable AC unit to cool a small, 150 sq ft drum room in my garage. I live in South Florida, so it does get a quite hot and humid. The room itself is completely isolated from the garage, but if not cooled, it gets up into the 90's in there. I built the room and installed an exhaust vent and PVC drainage line for the AC unit. The first unit I owned ran ~12 hours a day (off at night) and worked well for about 12 months. It maintained a dry, cool (~70-72deg) environment for my drums. Then, it stopped cooling the air. The fan worked, but no cool air and no condenser water. I called the company, and though very responsive on the phone, said the unit was out of warranty. So... I purchased a second one for about $260. This one worked fine on the same settings for about 6 months before the same thing happened. I may be stressing this unit, but 6 months? Come on... If you need this unit for long term cooling, I recommend going with something more robust. Otherwise, it probably works fine for limited applications. Hope this helps.

Frankly, because it cost half the price of the second choice GE model, I placed my order with reservations that it may not be an effective appliance, and was prepared to return it if the trial didn't work out. Instead, I feel fantastic about choosing the economical Sonya over better-known brands. After researching many brands of apartment-sized dryers at all price points, the higher-capacity Sonya portable became my first choice. It was highly reviewed on several other websites, including those that specialize in small-space living.

My husband and I completed a traditional outdoor vented installation yesterday. This dryer, plus a vintage Lady Kenmore portable replaced the landlord's Whirlpool Duet high-capacity stacking system. Although the stackers were very nice, their bulk made our tiny laundry area ineffective. The Sonya dryer is at least 8 inches smaller in all dimensions than the previous dryer, yet it holds an impressive load of laundry. In arid, high-altitude Montana, it completely dried each load 6 so far, including one with 4 pairs of 40"x36" cargo pants and several T-shirts in about 90 minutes. Another plus is the included hardware for a hanging installation; this feature saved $100 over other models that require separate purchase of a stacking rack. The Sonya far exceeded our expectations. I would recommend it highly to anyone needing to squeeze every inch of performance from a closet-sized laundry area.

July 9, 2013 Following up on my original review after a month of use: My husband and I are both impressed with the Sonya high-capacity dryer. Other reviewers commented that this machine doesn't seem to get hot, or that it takes a long time to dry. My experience has been quite different. As long it is not overloaded with heavy wet clothing, a load of mixed garments will be completely dry in 90 minutes or less and be toasty warm when removed from the dryer!

Tips on effective use:

The installation directions for hanging the dryer do not mention installing two (included) 4" metal and rubber feet to the back-bottom of the dryer. There are pre-drilled holes in the chassis. YOU MUST INSTALL THESE TO KEEP THE DRYER FROM FALLING OFF THE HOOKS!

Install with flexible aluminum vent pipe, not the cheaper accordion plastic type. Connect the 3" vent into a 4" dryer vent in the floor or wall; a 4" to 3" adaptor, available at most hardware stores, makes the transition smoothly.

Keep the dryer lint traps clean. If the exit air vent is blocked with a blanket of lint, the steamy air remains in the dryer.

RUN THE SPIN CYCLE TWICE for loads of extra heavy clothing to extract as much water as possible before drying.

Process larger (Queen or King) bedding in 2 loads: one for the bottom sheet, a pillow case and a few T-shirts, and another similarly loaded for the top sheet.

I ordered this product for our two bedroom apartment. We do laundry for two adults a 6 year old and an infant. This product is amazing! The dryer shipped quickly and got here fast. I did have to call in and figure out how to put the rotating band back on. It was a quick call an email later and a few basic tools to undo the back and just two hands to put the band back on. (They say during shipping it can come dislodged but it's a quick fix) after that I did a quick wash. (I handwashed our first load of laundry bc we had not ordered the sonya washer yet. It took a little longer to dry since I was unable to get all the water rang out of the clothes properly.

Either way this dryer is amazing. It handles big loads wonderfully.

This is the first time I have ever left a review. This is worth the money!!!! So worth it. Our electric bill has been level for the amount of clothes we wash and dry I thought it was going to higher but it has been pretty much the same.

This dryer works perfectly with the sonya apartment washer. My little apartment is able to house both of these in a small bathroom without sacrificing space. The dryer works very well, is quite quiet, and fits on a shelf to be out of the way. The fact it plugs into your standard outlet really helps since my little apartment doesn't have a 240v outlet. I'm saving time and money by being able to do my laundry at home. The lint trap is the only slightly inconvenient part of this dryer with it being all the way in the back. But it more than makes up for that with how quickly it drys clothes for its small size and it's ability to fit far more clothes than I expected. I also received this item two days after ordering it, very fast shipping. I highly recommend this product and the sonya apartment washer. Very satisfied customer.

I'm rating this dryer as 5 stars keeping in mind that it is a smaller dryer better for apartment sizes and for use with the smaller size portable washers. I'm using this with a HLP23E by Haier which is a 1.5 cu.ft. washer. I purchased this vs. one of the other even smaller dryers because as I understand the rule of thumb is to choose a dryer that's at least twice as many cu.ft. as your washer in order to dry clothes more quickly and more efficiently.

Now keep in mind that this does only use only a standard plug. Although you really do almost need a plug with it's own circuit. It's rated at 1400W/800W which W/V=A so it's 11.6/6.6Amps respectively. If you're using this on a 15A circuit with a bunch of other things you're going to be making a lot of trips to your panel and wearing out your breakers especially if you press the "high" button in on the dryer.

How I have it set up is next to a window in my kitchen. Unfortunately my whole apartment is run off two 15A fuses so I can't run this at the same time as anything else on the same circuit and it's best if I can set it up to run right before I go to bed. More on that to follow. I don't like venting it into my kitchen and throwing up dust everywhere especially since both my wife and I have allergies. Those little indoor dryer vents are about as code as my apartments wiring. I advise if you absolutely must vent inside (again, not code) that you vent into a HEPA vacuum bag. You may need some serious dehumidifying too.

In order to vent the dryer I took a piece of cedar board I had left over from another project and cut it so it would just fit into the upper stile of the window. I then cut a hole in it and screwed a standard dryer vent in. I carefully used insulation foam tape all the way around the board to seal any gaps. Standard dryer vent line is 4" but the exhaust on this dryer is not so I used some spring steel wire cutters to clip out a few of the vent tube reinforcement rings so I could zip tie one end of the standard exhaust tube over the smaller exhaust coming from the dryer. I removed the felt screen on the dryer vent since you wont need that venting to the outside, it seems just like a futile attempt to catch more dust from this thing. I also put up an 18" valence and with the dryer next to the window it hides the exhaust tube and the cedar board. I'm going to put some of the vinyl stained glass peel and stick(sort of) covers over the remaining exposed glass to further disguise my transgressions to this window which just looks out on a neighboring house anyway.

So about the power draw on this thing. I suppose if you were to leave it on low power by not pressing in the white button to the left of the time selector you probably could let it run through the whole cycle and it would get your clothes dry without wasting a ton of electricity. If you set it to high though it will get a load dry in a little under an hour and a half. I think you need to turn the knob to the max setting for it to get to max hotness which also gives you max time. So do you wanna sit around and wait while your clothes dry and not run anything else on that circuit in order to stop the cycle an hour and some odd minutes later? Neither do I. I know there are hourly countdown timers but am hour doesn't seem to be enough and the clothes are still damp. Luckily I picked up a mechanical countdown timer on E-bay that I won in auction for like $5 with shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121126923369?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 It's sold by weiproducts-us. They have a two and three prong version. They also have a two prong version of a digital timer with countdown function and say there is a 3 prong version but they don't have it yet. You need a three prong timer. I just plugged the dryer into the timer and set the dryer to max heat/time then set the timer for an hour and a half before I go to bed or leave, works every time.

A little more on the lint filter. I'm not sure how traditional dryers work but this thing has a belt driven drum and on the back of the drum is an in line turbine to push air out and is sealed around the sides by brush bristles. I don't think this thing will ever get hot enough to start a lint fire but after years of use those bristles are bound to rub down and fill the inside of the dryer with lint and moisture and eventually ruin it. I'll probably pull the back off this thing to check on the state of the bristles every few years and hopefully the company will provide a replacement kit should it be worn out. Although who knows, it may be durable enough that the bristles will last 20 years I'm not sure. Some humidity must still be escaping into the inside though so if it suddenly stops working after warranty it might be worthwhile to check the connections for corrosion inside. It is a pretty simple design though and although it's in line with the costs of comparable style dryers I think all these things should probably cost about half of current prices for what they really are.

I purchased a dual-zone King sized Chilipad about 1 1/2 years ago. Previously I would often waking up sweating at night, even if the room was cool. The Chilipad has helped significantly. I generally sleep cooler, and wake up less.

Unfortunately, this a great idea in need of some further engineering and refinement, and I am not so happy with the quality. After 1 1/2 years of use, here are my observations:

-The pad never quite gets as cool as I would like. After a couple of hours, its noticeably cool. But I wish it would get a bit cooler. Sometimes when the room is too warm, the unit cant keep up and I still wake up hot.

-The lights and controls on the cooling units need to be thought out better. I would be much happier with a simple on/off switch for maximum cooling... without the bright lights and the loud beeping. The lights on the top of the cooling units are extremely bright; I have to place a shoe or something on top of each unit in order to darken the room. The unit beeps quite loudly every time you turn it on or make an adjustment, which is distracting if someone else is already in bed sleeping. To set the unit for cooling, you have to first push the on button, which beeps loudly, then hold down the temp button for a few moments til you get to the lowest temp, and then you can finally set the temp. Its an unnecessarily long and loud process. If the unit is bumped when its running then it shuts down and resets, and you have to go through all the button pushing and beeping again.

-My pad recently developed a leak, which caused a big wet spot to form. I spoke to Becky in their customer service department, and she said that LEAKS are NOT covered under their "2 year warranty". She says that if it develops a leak, even under normal use and during the warranty period, you have to pay $90 for a new pad. So I paid the $90.

-One of my two cooling units recently stopped cooling. It would power on... bright lights, loud beeping and everything... but it would not cool. As a result, one half of the pad would not work. I had to ship the cooling unit back to them for a repair, which was completed promptly and it works fine now.

I hope they re-design this product in the future and fix some of these issues. When its working right, its pretty good. In spite of my frustrations with it, I would probably buy it again. I think it has the potential to be a great item if they come out with a higher quality version.

I have been using the chili pad for about a week now, after reading a pretty good review on gizmodo I decided to give it a try.

It advertises itself as being able to reach a temperature as low as 46 F, the lowest It's gone is around 59, which would be fair if it didn't go up to 70 as soon as you lie down on it, and it takes around 2 hours for the thing to reach this temperature. So you can forget about turning it on as soon as you lie down. This is on an Air conditioned room at around 67 F.

I called the company and they told me that to use a really thick blanket to trap the air. I was already doing that. They also told me to make sure that the control unit had at least 24 inches on all sides of cleared space, which it did since I actually read the manual.

What made me a little angry was the Rep's attitude towards me. After I told her I had tried all of those tips, she instantly told me that they offer a 90 day money back guarantee. I kept telling her that I just wanted to see if I didn't have a faulty unit since some reviews on amazon stated that the unit worked pretty well and cooled really fast (including the gizmodo review), and again she insisted on the money back guarantee. I mean, I want to like the product and give it a fair chance but she assured me that it's working correctly even though its performance is sub-par.

So I have mixed feelings about this. If it would get near the temp its advertised to reach (46) quickly and maintained it, then I would rate it 5 stars immediately, but since the rep told me that my unit was working correctly without even attempting to troubleshoot it somehow or ask me to send it back, then it gets only 2 stars from me.

It's a very expensive product, at the very least I would expect decent customer service. I didn't get this for pleasure either, I got this for my mom who experiences hot flashes and can't sleep well at night.

Since there are no videos of this thing on youtube, i'm thinking of creating a video to film the Temp indicator and show that the whole setup is done according to the manual and demonstrate how long it takes to cool and how it does not reach the advertised temperature. I will update it when I have it.

Let me start by saying, yes, I understand it's expensive, HOWEVER, in the 2 months I've had it, my heating bill is already lower, and I can see that with winter and summer heating bill savings, it will end up paying for itself.

The temperature control is fantastic!!! If your body heats up at night, the chili-pad will cool you down, and if you cool off, it will heat you up. It will heat or cool to the temperature you set it too, so you stay comfortable all night!

I really LOVE the dual zone. I sleep at 73degrees (winter temperature), and my girlfriend sleeps at 80. We both sleep ALL night in a deep, restful sleep. Both of us can set our own temperature to whatever makes us comfortable.

Review I read before I bought this product talked about the 'noise' made by the fan from the control unit.

After turning both sides on, I could not believe that anyone would complain about it. It's barely even a whisper!! I put the two control units at the foot of my bed, and it sounds like a small fan on in an adjacent room. There is a separate remote for each side, so you don't even have to get out of bet to turn it up, down, off, or set the sleep timer.

They say to use distilled water, and it holds a surprisingly small amount of water. You have to top the water off about every 2 weeks or so.

My dog and cat also sleep on the bed. I was slightly concerned about what their claws could do, but I turns out that the tubing is well protected inside the chili-pad so no worries about the pets!

This product has FAR surpassed my expectations!!! I work nights, so I can't wait to see how cool it keeps me in the summer, while I sleep during the day! I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a better more restful sleep!!!!

I have also owned my Chilipad for a year. Based on my experience, I would say the other reviews so far are accurate.

PROS

Definitely cools the mattress. The area under the sleeper still heats up but you can roll over and find a cooler spot.

Cooler sleep temp allows the user to run ambient AC slightly warmer and save on cooling costs.

Can work as a heating pad too.

Pad can be washed.

CONS

Noisy (about the noise level of an ocillating fan).

Bright control unit lights, which can be irritating in a dark room.

Works better when new, cools less efficiently as it gets older. Cooling temp never reaches as low as advertised. Lowest temp depends on ambient air temp might not get below 70 in a very warm room.

Weird pressure points, you can definitely feel the tubes inside the pad.

Bottom line: It did not eliminate my insomnia and night sweats but did reduce their intensity. I recommend combining the Chilipad with a cooling pillow for maximum effectiveness. Would I buy this again knowing what I know now? It's expensive, but yes, probably.

I bought this product less than a year ago and was stunned to find that it was leaking badly. Had I not encased my very expensive new mattress in plastic as I did when I first purchased it a year ago, my new mattress would be ruined and full of mold. That's a lot of loss to bear for any consumer. Most people do not use plastic around their mattresses, so for most people, having a product leak like this, could be catastrophic. I sleep alone and don't do gymnastics on my bed. No pets have access to my bedroom. I have treated this product with kid gloves from day one (I did not even wash it when it first arrived for fear of damaging the tubing). I even use a mattress pad over the Chilipad just to give myself added protection between myself and this extremely expensive product. I am well under the weight limit and can't think of any reason whatsoever that would make this product leak.

Like most people, I do not wash my mattress pad as often as I do my sheets, so there was no way to pinpoint when this started. It may have been leaking all along to some degree, and I just didn't notice it as the mattress pad on top of it was absorbing it until it began leaking badly enough to seep through and leave everything wet. I was horrified as I took apart all my bedding and found that everything was wet beneath me (including another protective sheet I had around the plastic that encases my mattress)! The plastic around my mattress was wet and that means that my new mattress would have been destroyed had I not had it encased in plastic, and after experiencing their customer service, I would have been left to my own devices for that as well!

They do not cover leakage of their own product! What good is a warranty if it does not cover any leaks, which is a huge issue! After reading some of the other reviews regarding this exact same issue, I am truly horrified that they force us to buy a new pad! Because my mattress has memory foam inside, and becomes insufferably hot, I felt hostage to having to shell out the money or live with the heat (and lose the huge investment I made in purchasing this unit). I paid nearly $700.00 for this contraption and they leave you on your own if it leaks! That's ludicrous!

The icing on the cake was the mold that had been slowly growing all over this pad that I have owned for less than a year and was extremely careful with! There is nothing acceptable about this situation as it is a serious health hazard, and after reading other reviews with people stating that they are having the exact same issue as well, the company should have already gone back to the drawing board by now and rectified this issue (as well as cheerfully refunding the people who have had this problem, sending them a new pad for free, and praying that they don't sue)! God only knows what laying on this mold has done to my health! They act as if it's a mere inconvenience and have the audacity to ask you to pay for a new pad!

The above is my personal opinion on this product. I would not recommend it under these circumstances. Condensation is one thing, but this kind of leakage can actually be dangerous. Either reinforce these pads with safer enclosures or use tougher, flexible, silicone in place of what is currently being used (better still-do both). This should have been fully covered, (and with this many people complaining about leaks, they should have already gone back to the drawing board on this).

I ordered the 2ton Amvent unit to cool my garage/shop, which is roughly 1ksqft. I am very happy with the performance. It's nice and quiet, and seems to have plenty of cooling power. Installation was a breeze, even on my own. It could be tough if you don't have good access to the location you're mounting it to, or if you plan to mount it really high up on the wall. I did have to drill through stucco on the exterior wall, which was the hardest part for me. I was able to setup a vacuum pump on the supply lines, though I'm not sure I used 100% proper process for that whole purge step. I wish they had detailed out the process a bit more for the DIYer. I was a bit surprised at the sheer size of the external unit, so be sure to double check those specs if you have any fancy mounting in mind. This type of AC setup is very nice, and I'm happy I found this before ordering a portable unit that I don't believe could have any chance of comparing. There is not much you can do wrong, except leaving a leak in the supply lines, so don't be afraid to take this on!

We purchased two of these units and I have to tell you they are absolutely awesome.

One side note you will need an air conditioning tech to come and install the hoses if you plan on doing it right and vacuuming out the moisture in the lines.

Our tech added valves on the end to allow us to be able to service them in the future and that addition was well worth the cash spent.

If you are looking for a great unit at an inexpensive price these guys will perform all day long and never leave you with an issue.

The 24,000 btu unit keeps my 700 sq foot dining/living/kitchen area nice and cool on a 90 degree day! May or may not do a larger area? I expected it to be ovepowered for my space but it's really just about right. I've got cathedral ceilings and a generally hot house though, I'm sure makes a difference.

My fiance installed it in just over half a day. The installation itself really only took about 2 hours, he was running around to various stores trying to find parts for the rest of the time. The only component of the installation that he really complalined about was bending the copper pipe since the way he put it in needed a 90 deg turn and the size of the pipe was not standard to most of the pipe-bending tools he found in local stores. I think he eventually just got ticked off, wrapped the thing around his arm, and somehow managed to bend it without a kink. Everything else in the installation seemed to go pretty smoothly. He's a contracter/builder though, so not sure it would be that easy for everybody to install.

I couldn't be happier with the results, for just over $1000 I've got something that works nearly as well as central air and didn't even have to hire an HVAC guy to install it since the freon was already primed. It's quiet enough noticible but not intrusive. Easily the best purchase I've made all year!! Beats the heck out of my old window/wall units.

I love it, After 2 summers in this house with central air in only the bedrooms, no ductwork in half the house (baseboard hot water heat for half the house) and no windows that I could put any window unit in (all swing out windows). I was resigned to the fact that I was going to have to put a sleeve unit in. Extra expense of cutting and framing not to mention weatherizing. I wasn't keen on the idea of listening to the hum of a compressor in my dining room all summer. This unit cools my kitchen, dining room, living room and foyer without breaking a sweat (approximatley 1200 sqft). It was easy to install but you will either need to know how to do electrical work or hire an electrician. A 3" hole to run the lines was a lot nicer than a 2' x 3' hole in the wall. There's a little noise from the fan but not the kind I can't live with. It would have cost several thousand dollars to install a central air unit and I installed this in one day for a fraction of the cost. I never heard of Amvent before but I'm impressed with how this works and the amount of money I saved compared to buying a brand name unit!

As with everything, I went on a search of all mug warmers in the universe before buying this one. I found a universal complaint of ALL mug warmer reviewers (of any brand) was "doesn't get hot enough" (especially the USB models). I think the manufacturers walk a thin line between "doesn't get hot enough" and setting the house on fire.

Initially, I tried putting a cold cup of coffee upon my new Mr. Coffee and was disappointed in the warmer's ability to heat up an already cold cup of coffee. (tried both metal and ceramic mug)

The good news is that if you put a fresh hot cup of coffee right from the coffee maker onto the "burner" that it does a pretty good job in keeping it hot from that point. I review this as satisfactory performance and give extra credit for its slim and sleek design.

I bought my Mr. Coffee mug warmer locally at a store. I wasn't expecting much out of it because of the reviews about it here on Amazon, but hey it was really cheap, under ten bucks. I was pleasantly surprised at how it kept my cup of tea consistently very warm throughout the day while I'm at work. This is how hot the heating plate can get: put a drop or two of water on it, and the drops will sizzle and evaporate quickly. The key to getting the best experience out of using the Mr. Coffee mug warmer is to use with a cup of HOT tea/coffee/soup/whatever. It won't make your cold beverage hot again (use a microwave for that).

I've had it for several months now, using it daily, and it's performed very well! Here is the deal with temperatures. If you place a hot cup of tea/coffee on it, it keeps it hot! Not the burn your tongue hot. As you drink, the cup becomes less full, and actually heats the contents more. Also, I've placed a half full cup of cold coffee on it, and it heated it up to a nice warm temperature within a few minutes. The heating plate will accommodate larger coffee mugs. The only disadvantage I've noticed with it is the counter gets rather warm were it is placed, so keep flammables and paper away to be safe. Also it does not have a auto shutoff that I'm aware of, however I have it plugged into a power box with motion control, so if I leave my desk for a long period it will shut off. A lot of reviewers have stated that this hot plate does not get warm enough to keep your coffee hot. I disagree, but also think I know why they are having that experience. How well this warmer works is extremely sensitive to the shape of your coffee mug, in particular the way that the bottom is. I did some controlled experiments to determine how much heat this warmer puts into a liquid in a cup and found as much as 30 degrees of variation between different mugs of the same or similar material.

The bottom line, is that any hotplate style coffee warmer depends on maximum surface area contact with the bottom of your mug. If you have a mug that is broad and flat at the bottom, filling the heating surface of the warmer, it will work great. If you mug is very narrow at the bottom or arches up so that only the edge is touching, the heater cannot be as effective.

You should either buy a different mug, or forego this energy wasting method altogether, in favor of a well insulated stainless steel vacuum mug like the ones from Contigo. Personally, I like the taste of coffee best out of a real mug, so I continue to use this warmer, just with a broad based mug.

I don't know why so many people have trouble with this item. My mother-in-law gave this to me well over a month ago and I think it's the greatest thing since TIVO. The key is to use a regular size cup with a flat bottom (not the ginormous ceramic cups that are more like SOUP bowls and only have a tiny bottom), and to put it on the warmer as soon as you pour the coffee into the cup. It WILL keep it not just warm, but HOT. It is 3:30 in the afternoon right now and I am still sipping on a HOT cup of coffee that I poured at 8:00 this morning. The lower the liquid gets, the hotter it gets, so be careful. I've also found that putting a piece of paper over the cup (like a piece of junk mail or an old CD case--without the CD inside, of course) will infinitely increase the heat factor, though it's not too safe and really isn't necessary (I've done it a few times when the dogs were shedding and my husband wanted the ceiling fans on didn't want dog hair in my cup, so I covered it...and it was so hot I burned my tongue.) Regardless, this item (the Mr. Coffee Mug *WARMER*) is not meant to heat up cold liquids; that's what microwaves were invented for. This is a great product when used properly and at the very least, it does what it was intended to do: keep beverages warm.

This stove is big, but well worth our money. It accommodates two full sized skillets at once. It boils water in a jiffy, lights easily and burns clean. We cooked under a canopy with ample overhead ventilation with no problems. No odor or discoloring our pans. I loved that the stove's bottom didn't get more than warm when cooking. We used it with a plastic table cover under it with no problem. It stayed lit in very windy conditions. As advertised, the auxiliary burner is less powerful than the main, but was still plenty hot enough to cook on its own. Downsides? Size if you're not car camping. It's the size and weight of a large briefcase, and even larger when in the box. Another issue: in broad daylight, it was difficult to tell if the burner was still lit -quickly passing a hand over the burner was sufficient to answer that question. To light the auxiliary burner you must briefly turn the main burner up to medium or higher -tricky if you're already cooking something on low over the main. Finally, it is difficult to empty the fuel tank of extra fuel when packing up, though it can be stored with fuel. We consider these minor detractions. Bottom line: the stove performs great and we love it and recommend it.

This stove works very well, with good wind protection. Most importantly, if you live in any area where a natural disaster could occur, such as earthquakes or hurricanes, this stove can really be a lifesaver! My sister used one after Hurricane Andrew and we have ours primarily because it is a valuable addition to our earthquake survival kit. Our 21 year old Coleman stove, model 424, from 1991 (the date is stamped on the bottom, along with "Made in U.S.A."), has been on many camping trips, and has been extremely reliable over many years and through all kinds of weather. It has never been repaired, and still works fine to this day.

This summer, we're taking a group camping, so I decided to get a second Coleman stove to augment the first one. But after reading the reviews here, I almost didn't buy a new one. Don't let the negative reviews scare you from buying it.

It's important to read and follow the instructions that come with the stove.

I compared this one with our 21 year old model, it's the same good quality. The latch is the same as the old one. The gas tank holds in its slots just fine. The wind guards are strong, flexible, and lightweight. The burners are exactly the same as the ones on my old Coleman stove and work wonderfully. The only real difference I see between my old Coleman and this one is the pump of the new one uses some plastic parts, and might not be quite as sturdy. But the rest of the unit looks and works just fine.

The gauge of the steel may not be what it was 50 years ago, but it's the much the same as 21 years ago, with an added feature: the steel is textured, which adds strength and resists scratching. You cannot make a dent in it with your thumb. Yes, pressing down on the cover moves it, just like pressing on the side of your car does, but it does not dent it.

This stove is made in the U.S.A. Those who complain about cheap Chinese manufacturing may have a counterfeit, not a real Coleman. Are there counterfeit stoves out there?

This is a great stove. I recommend it. I've been using Coleman stoves for more than 50 years. The oldest one I now have is 21 years old, and this new one which I just received, looks and works just fine.

I have two of these stoves (one is over 20 years old and one is the model covered in this review and it's about 4 years old); they have seen a lot of use. Very easy to use and rugged, I take both of them along when car camping because my family loves to camp and this allows the ultimate in outdoor cooking flexibility for use with our drip coffee maker and griddle. The folded up stove encloses the fuel tank, cooking grate and windscreens and is about the size of a briefcase.

Liquid fuel is the most reliable and hottest way to do camp cookery because it's easy to start and keep running while requiring very little maintenance. The dual fuel model gives you the option of using unleaded gasoline which is cheaper and more universally available than the most common fuels: a. Coleman Fuel (naphtha) or b. propane.

You can depend on this appliance during the harshest conditions including those times when power goes out at the house; down through the years I haven't had to think twice about using it to melt snow, boil water or make coffee at home during a power outage.

Best Lasko 4924 High Velocity Blower Fan With Handle Deals

I have central AC, but my home office is typically a few degrees warmer than the rest of the house. I decided to add a fan to help cool the area off, but I wanted the quietest fan that did the job. I ended up ordering the following three fans through Amazon for comparison:

Lasko 4924 Space-Saving High-Velocity 3-Speed Oscillating Blower Fan (HVB)

Honeywell Digital Tower Fan with Remote and Ionizer

Lasko 42 In. Wind Curve Tower Fan

I'll start with the quick summary for the TL;DR crowd. In terms of air flow, from highest to lowest, the ranking is: HVB >> Wind Curve > Honeywell. In terms of noise, from loudest to quietest: HVB > Honeywell > Wind Curve. Thus, the fan with the best air flow for the noise generated, and the one I picked, was the Lasko Wind Curve.

And now for the details, for those that don't suffer from ADD. Wall of text inc.

Power Usage

I was able to measure power usage for each fan using a Kill-A-Watt meter. All 3 fans had 3 output settings (low/med/high), and I measured their power usage to be:

HVB 95/103/111 watts

Honeywell 32/36/40 watts

Wind Curve 37/41/47 watts

Noise

I used an SPL meter app on my iPhone to measure how loud each fan was at each of those settings. All of the fans were tested in the same spot and the iPhone was placed on a stand about 5 ft away, in front and slightly to the side of each fan, so that wind noise didn't factor into the measurements:

HVB 59/61/64 db

Honeywell 50/53/55 db

Wind Curve 46/49/51 db

Air Flow

I don't have a way to measure each fan's output objectively, so these are my impressions:

HVB Lasko wasn't kidding when they labeled the 4924 with the acronym HVB for High Velocity Blower. When I first got it and ran it on *low*, I was thinking that this would be really good air flow for a quality fan on its *high* setting. It's by far the highest output fan here. They also described it as having a quiet motor; while this might be true, it's still the loudest of the bunch. Having the smallest vent opening of the bunch might have contributed to the noise level. Another user review I read of this fan said it feels like AC with this fan running, and that's true. If you're partially deaf, or plan on placing the fan 20 ft or more away from you, this is a good choice.

Honeywell and Wind Curve The output of these two fans are more comparable. I still feel the Wind Curve puts out a little more air flow than the Honeywell at the equivalent setting though. For some reason, even the Wind Curve feels like AC is running, if only on low. There's an uncanny cooling effect the Lasko fans have that the Honeywell doesn't. Maybe it's just better airflow at a lower noise level. If you look at the measurements above, the Wind Curve on high is only slightly louder than the Honeywell on low. I mostly ran these fans on low--as I was looking for the quietest solution--and at times, I still felt warm with the Honeywell, but the Wind Curve delivers. The Honeywell does have a filter on the back intake side, which probably hurts its air flow a bit. You can hear a *very* slight ticking sound from the Wind Curve at times, sort of like fast crickets. I haven't found it annoying and it doesn't sound like something's wearing out. It's probably only noticeable because of its low noise level.

Size / Weight / Appearance

Exact dimensions and weight can be found on their Amazon product pages, so I won't provide specific numbers. All of them were delivered in their product boxes, which were all somewhat beatened up from being delivered by UPS.

The HVB is the shortest, but also the heaviest. Both the Honeywell and the Wind Curve are noticeably lighter than the HVB. It's shipped as a single piece and there's nothing to assemble. You take it out of the box and it's ready to go. It has a low center of gravity and stands up stably. All tower fans should be designed this way. It has horizontal flaps that can be adjusted to direct airflow up. The flaps are really small, but they seem to work decently.

The Honeywell is about a foot taller than the HVB. It's shipped in 5 pcs that have to be assembled--the main body, 2 pieces that join together to form the circular base, and another 2 pcs that join together to form an "optional" pedestal that sits between the base and the body. I wouldn't really call the pedestal optional, as without it the vent opening starts about 5-6" off the ground and there are no flaps to adjust the airflow up. I found assembling the unit difficult to do by myself. It's just not easy holding these pieces so they line up while you screw them together. In fact, little plastic fragments broke off while I was assembling it. I assume they were all internal and non-essential, as the product looks fine once assembled. The manual cautions that using the pedestal makes the unit less stable, and that is true. It's the wobbliest of the bunch, but it won't tip over easily. A sturdier base and pedestal would have made this a lot less wobbly. The black plastic in the product pictures looks really nice and shiny, but not as good in person.

The Wind Curve is a few inches taller than the Honeywell, making it the tallest of the bunch. It's shipped in 3 pcs--the main body and 2 pcs that join together to form its circular base. Assembling this unit still wasn't easy to do solo, but it was easier than dealing with the Honeywell and its body-pedestal-base. The base on this feels a little sturdier than the Honeywell's, and the assembled unit is less wobbly, though still not perfect. There are some horizontal flaps to direct the airflow up, but these only cover the top third of the vent. None of the online pictures I've seen for this fan do it any justice. The wood accent makes the unit look really nice in person.

Controls

The HVB only has physical controls. There's a knob that controls the fan speed, from left to right: low-mid-high-off. There's a separate push button that turns the oscillation on/off. There's no remote, no timer, and no ionization function.

The Honeywell has digital controls and comes with a remote. There's an LCD window that shows the air temperature, fan speed, and timer. It has one nice ability that neither of the Laskos have, and that's the ability to turn on/off at a preset temperature, just like the HVAC system in a home. Although the controls are all digital, half of the six buttons have shared functions. There's a single button that controls the fan speed and turning the unit on/off and it cycles from: high-med-low-off. So if you want to turn the fan on and run it on low, that's 3 clicks. There's also a single button that controls oscillation and ionization, and it cycles between: oscillate only-oscillate & ionize-ionize only-neither. The third shared function button controls how the unit turns off, either by timer or temperature. The timer can be set in 1 hr increments, from 1-12 hrs I believe. Two buttons are labeled up/down, which can only be used for setting the timer or temperature. The last button is for a "breeze" feature that is unique to this fan, which essentially just varies the fan speed. There's two breeze modes, one varies the speed between the current speed and the next setting below it (high-med, med-low, low-off), and the other just varies the speed between high-med-low. I found the noise level changes from this feature to be too distracting. The remote has five of the six buttons that the unit has, lacking the button to enable the timer/temp mode. Oddly, up/down arrows exist on the remote, but are only useful if you're already in the timer/temp mode. However, if you're using the remote, chances are you can't read the display to see what the timer/temp setting is anyways. The other side of the remote has a button which controls an LED flashlight.

The Wind Curve also has digital controls and comes with a remote. There are a total of 8 leds displaying the status of the fan, from left to right: 4 red leds indicate that the timer is enabled and how much time is left--representing 30 mins, 1 hr, 2 hrs, 4 hr (you add them up to get the total); 3 green leds indicating the fan speed--low, med, high; and 1 blue led indicating whether ionization is on/off. There's 5 buttons controlling the fan, the same on the unit as on the remote--power, oscillate, timer (adds 30 mins to the timer with every click), ionization, and fan speed (cycles between high-med-low). I like that there's a separate control to turn the fan on/off and the fan speed is remembered. The timer setting is a little primitive compared to the Honeywell's though, as it does take 15 clicks if you want the full duration of 7.5 hrs. All of the controls are confirmed with a beep. I think I read a review where someone complained it was too loud, but I found it really faint, even compared to the fan on low. The click of the button on the remote is louder. Although, the confirmation beep for turning the fan off is a little long--lasting about a second--and that could be shorter.

Oscillation

All of the fans have this feature and were quiet enough that I can't hear the difference whether on or off. The Laskos oscillation range appeared to be a little under 90 degrees. When placed in a corner, I don't think anyone would complain about the coverage. The honeywell's oscillation range was a little wider, but it oscillates in one direction a little faster than the other. Ionization

The HVB lacked this feature, but I consider it a gimmick anyways. From what I've read, ionized air doesn't freshen up the air, it just impairs your sense of smell. Ionizing air cleaners also operate by charging the air and dust with one charge, and having an oppositely charged plate or filter in front of the air flow to catch the charged dust. Neither of the fans with ionization features have this plate/filter.

We ordered this fan after reading another on-line review. It lives up to its reputation....it is very quiet and gives a good strong breeze when needed. It works so well that it almost feels like it has an 'air conditioning' effect. We love it and would recommend that you purchase this model if you are looking for a silent, strong fan that takes up very little space.

This fan was in a cabana I rented for a day by the pool on a day in Florda that hit 93 degrees...I thought I actually had air conditioning outdoors. This fan is QUIET, you can use the oscillation or not. It has 3 speeds (low, med or high). It is quiet at all speeds. It truly made a hot, humid day very comfortable. I tried locating this fan at local stores and couldn't find it, so I was excited to see Amazon had it for sale. You will not be disappointed. It is about $20 more expensive than similar models, but I actually tested this one in the cabana and I was sold. You are not going to regret it!!

The Lasko High Velocity Fan/Blower is an outstanding choice for a large/medium sized room. The fan moves a considerable amount of air (see the video) and offers all of the necessary options timer, variable speed, and oscillation.

Pros-

1Very strong this fan moves a lot of air

2The ability to direct the air to the areas that you want Lasko gives you a "Jet Stream" of air.

3Variable speeds 3 speeds for different room sizes or conditions.

4While it is loud it is a steady sound level it is not high pitched or squeeky so it is easy to ignore. In fact, it is perfect for background sound while sleeping.

5Oscillation covers about 45 degrees of rotation.

6While it is not stylish the unit offers a remote control that is perfect for a night stand.

FInal Verdict This is a high-end fanand while it is not inexpensive it is very effective for rooms of up to about 400 sq. ft.

I purchased my first fan in 2003. This fan has ALOT of power. You will feel the fan blowing on any of the 3 settings, unlike many other floor or stand fans, which lack power.

Took it to our annual Hula show (Ho'ike) and the ladies were so grateful for me bringing this fan in our changing/dressing rooms. (They always forget to turn the A/C on while we're getting dressed).

I Couldn't find it any where here in Washington State, so I searched the internet. I'm now adding 2 more of these fans to our household.
