Cheap XtremePowerUS Newspaper, Paper Log Maker

I only bothered to write this after reading the previous reviews. Yes, you need to soak the newspaper a day or so. I have soaked legal documents too, for maybe 4 days, and used them. It is very easy to operate. I have taken to day camp and the children did it, so it cannot be all that complicated to use and figure out. Yes, it can be "messy." Get over it! Here in California, bricks are dry in about 2 weeks, depending on weather. And rolled up newspaper does NOT burn as well. IF you are in an urban area, esp. in aftermath of disaster, this would be a great way to make logs to burn with newspapers that are so abundant. Not perfect, but what is? What if you really needed to burn something (for purifying water, heating, cooking, etc.)? Though you can't burn these logs right away, I think they are the perfect thing for use in urban areas. And it isn't just for newspaper. I have used paper bags, various bond paper, junk paper (plastic removed), toilet paper rolls, old paper napkins, you name it! Logs from this device may not be your only fuel source, but I think it could be an important one. I am reminded of the people in Nazi Germany who burned their furniture to stay warm because they couldn't get coal or whatever other fuel they were using.

I purchased this item prior to winter and made several logs out of shredded newspaper. It is a summer use item, not something you want to do out in the cold. It is messy. The paper has to sit in the water mixture for at least 24 hours or it won't break down into pulp. The item itself works great. The logs don't burn very long unless you add wax or oil to the mix, which would never work for an indoor fireplace.

Best Deals on XtremePowerUS Newspaper, Paper Log Maker

I bought this thinking I knew how long it would take the logs to dry. WRONG!!! I made logs 3 weeks ago, and they are still wet to the touch. Now, having said that, I have them in an unheated garage. Dry time would be much shorter in a heated space.

I felt the need to add to my old review. Not only does it take forever and a day for these "logs" to dry, but when you put them on the fire they just smolder. I added 2 to an already burning fire and they just sat there and smoldered. I couldn't believe it. To get them to actually burn at all you have to break them up. As far as I'm concerned this press is junk. You're better off just rolling up the newspaper as tight as you can by hand and throwing that into the fire. It wouldn't last long, but at least you would get actual flame, and heat.

This heater is truly cool to the touch. I turns on and off automatically to keep the room a comfortable temperature. It has worked great in the baby's room where there is no heat duct.

This works as I hoped it would. It does have a fan, which sometimes can be irritating (or at least drying) to my eyes, but I'm not cold anymore, so it's worthwhile! I use it near my desk at work to supplement the central heating. The thermostat feature is nice because it automatically cycles on and off throughout the day.

I orderded two of these for two of the rooms in my house. I guess I'll start with the good points. They put off a considerable amount of heat! Will heat up my 12x12 and 8x11 room in less than 10 minutes. (from 65 to roughly 70) They have not really impacted my electric bill very much, as a matter of fact, I was quite suprised when I got the bill! Amazon did a great job packing and shipping the heaters to me. Now on to the places that need improvement. The first problem I noticed is that you can't install these units (and use the supplied braces) in old construction. I bought these to replace my radiant ceiling heat in my home. I was able to install them anyway. I just didn't use the braces. One of the heaters in my daughters room is very quiet, whereas the one I installed in my room will wake me out of a dead sleep. Not quite sure as to why. They are both exactly the same heaters, installed exactly the same way. That's really the only downfalls I can think of. If you are concerned with noise, I suppose go with the cadet versions. I have one in my living room and can't even tell when it's running (aside from the noticable heat).

Okay, I've been in your shoes. You are stopping by Amazon to read reviews before heading off to the local grocery super-store. The Oster dehydrator has terrible reviews online, but it happens to be the only model the super-store carries. You are so excited to try dehydrating your summer veggies that you want to chance it. After all, only a dozen people gave it a bad rating, surely they only had bad eggs. If a company is selling a product, surely it went through testing!

Stop right there. Don't do it. Learn from my mistake and save yourself time, energy, and hard earned cash.

Upon arriving home from the super-store, I excitedly took my new dehydrating friend out of its box. This next part is my faultI should have tested the unit before slicing my veggies, but I did not. I happily arranged my zucchini on the trays, set the machine on the counter, and plugged it in. The light turned on, but everything was oddly quiet. Just like in the reviews online, the fan did not operate. Undeterred, I called Oster customer service. The helpful representative told me that the fan makes a "very noticeable" noise when functioning. The silence meant nothing at all was happening. She advised that I return it to the store.

Next, I cleaned and repackaged the product. Thankfully I still had my receipt and made my return. The next day, I went to another store and picked up a different brandNesco. The Nesco was similar in price, but had more features. It has an adjustable temperature and the heating unit is on top, making it easier to maintain and clean. The Nesco is quiet and efficient. Most importantly, it works.

Walk away from the Oster. Trust the reviewers online and buy another model. I wasted was lured in by false hopes and advertising, but it's not too late to save yourself.

If you are looking for a dehydrator to use just a couple time a year, then this one would be great. It is cheap and it gets the job done. I, personally, should have spent the extra $20 to get a Nesco. This one is VERY LOUD when running. Also, the slots in the trays are quite large. So far most every thing I have chopped up has fallen through the trays while drying. This dehydrator has no temperature control either; depending on your goals, this may or may not matter.

I love this dehydrator; we actually bought two of them to keep up with the demand for crispy apple chips. Today the oldest one (was Christmas gift) started shutting off by itself, that is the fan stopped running. The older one which is a couple weeks old started last week to shut off. My husband returned it and got a replacement. I set it up this morning and the fan shut off within and hour after I started it. I have seen one other query regarding the fans shutting off. I would consider this a perfect appliance for the money if only I could find out how to fix the fan issue.

We tried using different electrical outlets but it didn't make any difference.

Honest reviews on Oster FPSTDH0101 4-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator, White

I bought this dehydrator because I wanted to bring jerky with me for a high protein, on-the-go snack at work and other places. I'm not sure why so many people are having as many problems with this machine as they are. Maybe there are a lot of "lemons" in the bunch, but I have had no problems with mine. Maybe I'm one of the lucky few, or maybe people are doing something wrong which causes the machine to fail. I've only used it for batches of jerky, but that's all I wanted it for. Many people have said that it stops and starts up again after a while, but I would guess they have overfilled the trays and the machine is possible heating up too much so shutting down for a while is a safety mechanism. Mine just goes, but I leave quite a bit of room between pieces of jerky so that there is plenty of room for the air to circulate. I have not had it stop once during drying. If you follow the directions it is fairly clear that you need to leave space between pieces. I have not done more than about 2 1/2 lbs of meat at a time so that there is plenty of space for circulation. That seems to be a good amount, and it gives me plenty of jerky for a while. I think you've gotta realize what you are getting before you start griping about the machine. This is an entry level, cheap dehydrator at best that you can get at Wal-Mart. If you are expecting top of the line quality and features, you're kidding yourself. If you want all the bells and whistles, you're gonna pay a lot more for them. It would be nice if it had a timer to turn it off automatically, but again, you get what you pay for and I chose to get a cheaper dehydrator that does not have that option, and really it has not been amuch of an issue. Size-wise, it's about 14 inches across and about 10 inches tall so not that big, and it's not as if I leave it on the counter when it's not in use. I've read a lot of reviews of people complaining about it sounding like a "jet engine". If you think it sounds like a jet engine, I would suggest you've never heard a jet engine. Mine sounds like a fan, a little louder than a regular desk fan but quieter than a floor box fan. That's what it is basically, a fan with a heating mechanism and some trays. I can easily tune it out and so can my wife. Sound has not been an issue for us. All in all, if what you're looking for is a simple to use dehydrator that has no bells and whistles and is cheap, this may be the one for you. Follow the included instructions, and I would guess you'll be fine. Like I mentioned before, maybe there are some bad ones out there, but I have had no problems with mine.

Just bought one of these last week. Dehydrated a batch for less than 3 hours. Went to use it again this week, turned it on and went to working on other things. Walked by it a few minutes later and noticed the fan had stopped running. The light was still on indicating it was getting power, but no fan. Disappointing and expensive for one use and not worth the hassle.

The Lasco 5812 is a very good heater especially since it has stronger fan forced air than any other I have tried & still not loud, even stronger air flow than one costing over $90. It sends the air along the floor rather than out of the top. Moving warm air can be felt for at least 5 feet from the heater. I measured it. One serious drawback is that the thermostat even though it controls the heating of the air from a lower level of 750 watts to a high of 1500 watts, it will not cut the heater off when the thermostat setting is reached. It will only lower it to the 750 watt maintenance level. This is not a problem if the heater is located where you can turn it off yourself when the room is warm enough or the temp is too cold for it to need to shut off. Where I find a problem is in my office which is unattended for hours at a time and over night or I am away on a trip. I like to keep my computer, etc. at least 60 degrees when I am not around. Since the outside temp varies from night to day which affects the inside temp, this heater will stay on even when warm enough although it will lower to the low wattage. This means that my office could get a lot hotter than desired during the day when unattended. Because of this, I use the more expensive $90+ heater in my office even though it seems not to put out as much warm air and certainly not as strong an air flow as the Lasco 5812. The Lasco works as designed very nicely, but uses electricity even when not necessary. To be just about perfect, all it needs is a thermostat that will turn it off rather than just provide controlled high and low heat. It is great when you will be around to shut it off yourself if the temp over reaches your desired amount like in your den while watching TV. I like mine regardless. Besides, the company does not want you to leave the heater unattended for safety sake anyway...Dan

The build quality is great, but it is louder than most heaters and the thermostat will never shut off the heating element even at the lowest setting. The noise isn't outrageous, but it's definitely on the loud side compared to other forced-air heaters I've used. As for the thermostat, this probably wouldn't be a problem on a very cold night or in a large room. In my small room on a mildly chilly night, however, the heater remains on even when the dial is on the lowest setting. I was roasting. Too bad. The build quality seems really solid, and it comes with a three-year warrantee.

Great Little heater, good Build Quality, unit won't shut off when at set temp . It's just a simple good little heater. It has a thermostat control, power switch, auto shut off if tipped, and forces are from the top and hot air forced to the bottom so you can place the heater against the wall if needed

Honest reviews on Lasko 5812 Automatic Air-Flow Heater with Temperature-Regulation

I bought this space heater in October of 2008 from a vendor on Amazon.com. I'd gone back to school and was renting a basement apartment with little heat. This heater made the late autumn/early winter of Michigan's Upper Peninsula bearable, and my small room livable.

It's been going strong in Mid-Michigan, all through the night, in front of the front the door, for over two years. I place it there at night and it really mitigates the chilly air that comes off the steel door. The fact that the hot air comes out the bottom makes my cats happy and my feet, too. Now, winters here can get down to -30 deg F, and if the wind's blowing over 10-15 MPH, even colder. Late 1970's trailer homes aren't known for being well-insulated and this really helps keep the propane bill down by making the room I'm in warm and comfortable.

If I turn it past midway, the poor heater turns itself off and has to sit for about 45 minutes until I can turn it back on, but it can run through the night, 8 to 9 hours, on the lowest (750 W) setting or just slightly higher. It's blowing warm/hot air, so it's not silent, but it's a white noise so it's very easy to ignore. If you want to use the highest setting, use if for only 40-45 minutes or it will turn itself automatically. I think there's a fuse that overheats at that setting.

It has a very heavy cord, which makes it ideal if you need to step over it or tug on it inadvertently. It's not fancy, but it got me through three days of no propane during a cold spell of 10 deg F during the day and -20 deg F at night. It's been kicked, pushed over, had cats run into it, had groceries dropped on it, and it still does what I purchased it for: it keeps me warm, supplements my furnace so I'm only heating the room I'm in and not the whole trailer, and it keeps the cold drafts from my feet.

I was actually thinking of buying another one because of both its toughness and its decent cost. Well, if this one does quit working, I will most definitely replace it. It's not perfect, it's not pretty, but it does the job it's built for, and if I could, I'd give it four-and-a-half stars.

UPDATE:

This heater lasted three and a half years, giving up the ghost in January of 2013 after three power outages and two subsequent surges. I will definitely be purchasing another one. This heater was both durable and effective.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Lasko 5812 Automatic Air-Flow Heater with Temperature-Regulation

I just received this heater today. The problem is that the heat never shuts off, becuse the thermostat controls only the variation between 1500 watts and 750 watts. Even at the lowest possible thermostat setting the heat elements will never shut off. If you have a large, cold room it's fine, but if you're trying to heat a small room, such as a bathroom, or using it to supplement a heater in a larger room, the heat will keep on building and building up without control. Obviously, in a bedroom situation you would have to get up at night to manually adjust the heater--turn it off--then get up later to turn it back on. This is not a heater that can be used without constnt supervision and manual adjustment.

I called customer service to find out if this is a design flaw, or am I missing something, but have not received a call back. Rereading some of the reviews of this heater, I notice that some people mentioned this design flaw, but it was not stated vehemently enough to disuade me from buying the heater. I am bluntly stating it now; this is an enormous problem.

We installed this timer so that the pool pump would go on daily from 11a-2p so that the solar cover on our above-ground pool could heat up the water. With the installation this year we've had the warmest pool water since the pool only stayed on while the solar cover was "super-heating" We like it for that fact. You can override the timer by opening the front cover and moving a red switch left/right which can be convenient. I'm not sure how long this will last since it "seems" a bit flimsy when you override the timer by moving the switch.

First one did not oscillate so had a new replacement sent to me which works fine.

Has the following modes -

Low: low speed fan with heat (900 watts)

high: high speed fan with heat (1500 watts)

fan: high speed fan without heat so you can use it on the summertime

auto: you set the temperature (50-86F in 2 degree increments) and the heater turns on/off when it's 2 degrees below/above the set temperature.

Remembers mode when power is off unless it's unplugged then it returns to default. Plug is polarized (two-prong).

Has an OSC button so unit can oscillate (left to right) and a timer to keep unit on for a duration of 1-8 hours in 1 hour increments.

Has air inlet grill with filter that can be easily removed and cleaned.

Has a tip over safety switch on the bottom. When the unit is tipped, it automatically shuts off.

There is a hand slot near top to move unit.

Remote control has OSC, Set Time, Temp +/-, Mode, and Power. Needs two AAA batteries not included.

Anytime you press a button, even for each increment you change the temperature, it makes a loud beep. Wish you could turn that sound off or made the sound much quieter.

The heater I ordered because mine went out and I went to all local stores and everybody just had a sale on them so they didn't have any in the surrounding towns of me at all! I looked up heaters on Amazon.com found this one was a little sketchy about the product for the price comparing to my last buys on heaters from local stores. Package came in fairly quick. Once opened up and plugged in it was instantly blowing out warm air in a cold room. The features are good just wished it had a auto timer to turn it on like my others do. Overall this is a awesome heater and am thinking about ordering another for another room. It heats my living room and kitchen area pretty good here in Louisiana when it is in the 30's i can stay comftorable. So it is a better product then the other few I have!

Best Deals on SPT Tower Ceramic Heater with Thermostat

Problems:

Loud beep when timer mode ends which always wakes me up. Why would they do that?

In automatic thermostat mode it goes on and off but only with the high speed fan setting. So the heating is loud and not gentle. Why wouldnt they employ the lower fan setting for simply mainting a room's heat?

The thermostat is crude. It is built into the unit which makes it innacurate and constantly fluctuating depending on whether its on or not. The heater heats up past the temp you set it at so you get fairly wide swings in temperature. Employing the low setting in auto mode could have mitigated this but apparently they didnt want to bother.

Most annoying of all, the oscillation isn't silent. It makes a tiny little clicking sound when it reaches the end of one direction and begins moving in the opposite. It's just loud enough that I can hear it from my bed a few feet away and it drives me crazy because it isn't a constant "white" noise.

The remote control needs a backlit lcd readout so you dont need to be five feet away from the unit to see what mode, temp, timer, etc. it is using.

Lastly the unit never seems to stop offgasing. After using it for weeks it still creates that distinct plasticy heater smell. Maybe its the ceramic element and not the housing. Whatever it is, it gives the impression of toxic voc's.

I wonder if the Swiss and Germans settle for this poorly designed Chinese stuff like Americans do? Three stars because it works and there is certainly worse out there, but I will probably be returning it. Target 90 day return policy even if purchased online. Wake up amazon!! You're falling behind.

Honest reviews on SPT Tower Ceramic Heater with Thermostat

I purchased this heater less than one year ago. The thermostat has been wildly inaccurate since after the first month of use. It began with not turning on on the automatic setting (this is the main reason I purchased this item too so it is extremely annoying that that function went out first) Then it started making a strange noise as it oscillates. Now it has degraded to the point that it won't turn on at all on the automatic setting due to the thermostat inaccuracy, it shuts off immediately on the high setting, and if i try to turn it on to low it runs for about 2 minutes before the thermostat says it is 89 degrees in the room and it turns off for the safety setting. I'm freezing and i'm extremely angry that i wasted 70 dollars on this useless hunk of junk.

Purchased this to fit in the space formerly used by a huge big screen tv. The new flat screen tv above the fireplace makes a cozy area! Haven't used the heater yet, but expect it to be just as good! The ambiance is so much fun! Looks more real than any electric I have seen. I did not get the optional glass front because I didn't want the glare. The wire mesh screen looks great! Very nice pulsating glow from embers and logs.
