Review of Vogelzang TR003 Highlander EPA Wood Stove

Where do I begin? This heater is no heater at all. We bought it when our 30 year old wood heater became a hazard. Ordered it from our local lumber company. It does not heat 100sq. ft. much less 600 to 1000. The stay clear glass immediately became covered with soot and within one week the "Z" bar, baffle support fell out. Unable to get a response from the company during the holidays, we continued to try to heat with it. After a couple weeks, they finally called us back, and told us the airflow was affected due to the bar being out, and to just pop it back in. Finally got it back in, only to find it still did not heat well. After about three weeks it is out again. Just fell out while heater was in use. Not being loaded or wood being moved at all. I opened the door to find it lying in the opening. Am in the process to see if I have any recourse or any possibility of a refund!

I've been heating with this stove in Northern MI for two years and for the price it heats as well as stoves that cost three times as much. I should know, my parents both heat with Lopi stoves that are quite pricey in their 2 houses both similar in size to ours. While it doesn't heat the full 1700 sq ft of our house, it keeps the core area around the stove nice and warm and spreads at least a reasonable amount of heat throughout the house to knock off the chill in the distant areas. I would suggest burning only nicely seasoned hardwood in this stove as softwood and even softer hardwoods don't put out the heat. We burn red oak exclusively and can keep the core of our home, which is a 1930's farmhouse, between 65-75 even on bitterly cold winter days. One final suggestion, make sure you follow the chimney guidelines to the letter and install the minimum of 15 ft of chimney above the stove as if you cut corners with it the stove will not draft correctly and won't heat up to it's intended levels. I'd recommend this stove to anyone who wants a good, solid wood stove at a good price.

We purchased this wood stove a few months ago and are very disappointed. The blower is so loud you cant just sit and listen to the fire ( even on the lowest setting). The damper design does not let enough air to the fire so we have to leave the door cracked and cant leave the room and the gasket already fell off and had to be replaced. Do not get this stove. Also it would be nice to have a ash box.

Honest reviews on Vogelzang TR003 Highlander EPA Wood Stove

While the stove itself is great (owned it for the last 4-5 years) the blower heater has not worked properly for the last 3-4 years. It is terrible. When it does run it makes a terrible noise and only one of the fans works. We have taken it apart and cleaned it etc. to no avail.

We have this stove in a 600 sf room, and it hardly keeps the room warm. The opening is so small it's hard to get wood into. This stove was certainly a waste of money.

I have a Sears dryer model, and when I needed to replace this part, I checked the Sears website for the parts I needed. For one third of the price at Sears, I could even afford to make mistakes and still come up ahead by buying at Amazon.

After replacing just one of the two parts, and have it burn up again in about a week, I realized there was an *orange tag* near the part slot, advising to *always* replace both parts at the same time. So I bought the same kit again, and replaced both parts, as advised.

I also read that this part can burn out if the output duct is clogged by too much lint, so I also cleaned up the output duct when installing the second kit. It has been two weeks now and the machine still works well. I am a happy customer.

I needed the thermal cut out when our Whirlpool dryer broke down. The order came in a small package. We were able to get the dryer back in action.

Would recommend, however the heating coil element was the issue. BUT if you can troubleshoot with a meter to determine if these parts have failed before purchasing. Would for the cost of attempting to troubleshoot yourself purchase.

I couldn't get at my coil element and to do so required that the drum be removed to replace. For my area (Norhtern N.J.) the cost of the repair -service call and parts were $ 260.00 (year 2013).

The parts worked like a dream. The key to these replacement parts is to replace the parts on your drier with the parts in the kit even if some appear to be still in working condition.

The price was extremely reasonable and the delivery time was much quicker than I anticipated.

Same symptoms Kenmore dryer blows, no heat. No conductivity through thermal fuse. Exhaust duct blocked (not cleaned for 2 years). I have close to 30 ft. rigid duct with booster so cleaning it is a chore. Of course had to go and clean it... Genuine part is over 30 bucks, not big deal but burns as fast as this one.

This set is worked quite well. First one I bought did not show up at all, had to order another one in two weeks while handling issues with the first. To be quite honest, there was nothing to handle, seller refunded money, then sent another one for trouble. Oh well, will use it in 3 years when the duct is clogged again.

One thing to check is cut off temperature on the smaller piece. Should much with your dryer. Mine had 325F and replacement is the same. If your dryer is higher it will likely blow thermal fuse again quite soon. And keep you ducts clean!

We use this heater as our main source of heat. During the winter we freeze and it won't heat the room over 57 degrees. We have to use a separate space heater in addition to this one to keep the room at a comfortable temperature. Our small heater puts out more heat and keeps our room warmer then this one does.

we use in rv in addition to gas unit. Keeps the room at a comfortable temperature and central gas unit hardly ever kicks on.

This is a great heating unit. We use it in an office that was converted from a garage. The room does not have duct work from the house and it is very cold without the heat. This unit heats the entire room which was a two car garage so it is a very large space with a high ceiling, larger than more room sizes.

The unit is able to turn off and on automatically and has a very good thermostat that keeps the room warm all day. I usually turn it off completely in the evening and it is pretty quick in the morning to heat up. We live in the South so it is warmer. It might not do as well in the cold Northern spots.

Honest reviews on Lasko Cyclonic Digital Ceramic Heater

I purchased this heater from Sam's Club for $59.98. I also purchased the 1 year replacement plan for $5.72, just in case. I bought this heater as a secondary heat, our primary source being a wood stove. So far, I am very pleased with the amount of heat that is produced. It did take a while (couple hours) for our living room to heat up, but once it did, maintaining the heat seems to be no problem. I think for the money, this is fairly good product.

My girlfriend and i purchased this heater at sam's for $60. we had this thing for a few months now and all i can say is this thing is under powered. It takes 8hours just to raise the temperature in the apartment 10 degrees, and it take 2 hours to raise the temp in our small bedroom to 74degrees. This thing also keeps tripping the fuses.

This heater works very well. I don't need a "fan only" setting in the winter (see previous review). Anyway, I bought it for an uninsulated attic bedroom about 16x12. Keeps the room warm, runs quietly, and doesn't have a noticeable effect on the electric bill. The remote control adds to the convenience. If you buy something else, be sure it has remote.

The description "includes a programmable thermostat with a 7-hour timer, allowing you to pre-set room temperatures for different times of day" is not true. This product is no different than other heaters that have a simple thermostat and a simple timer. You cannot "program" temperatures for different times of day. It doesn't even have a clock! No different than a Lasko which is much cheaper. I bought it to turn on daily at 5AM returned disappointed!

UPDATE:

Oct 10 2011 to Feb 15 2012 RIP.

Was used very heavily but I still think that it should have held up longer, at least a full heating season. Was not worth exercising the warranty.

Overall a decent compact heater.

The good:

Puts out quite a bit of heat.

Timer from 1 to 7 hours in hour increments.

The oscillate feature lets you distribute heat to more than one room.

Quiet.

Thermostat handy and works as expected.

Remote a nice convenience.

The bad:

A power failure leaves ti turned off, not suitable for untended operation.

Setting the heater to low sets the thermostat to max.

Power on gets you the High Max settings not where you left it.

Timer only turns the heater off; it could just as easily toggle it; that is if its set when the heater is off it turns it on, if the heater is on when it is set it turns it off.

The ugly:

The remote icons aren't terribly obvious.

It counts in binary octal. e.g. the timer goes 1,2,4 so you get all the numbers with 8 button pushes, but if you mess up you have to start over.

An OK heater for the money, the thermostat actually works unlike some of the other small ceramic heaters out there. If it didn't have the power fail and early death problems I would have given it 4 1/2 stars.

We purchased this item as a chill chaser so we would not have to light our wall heater untill we had to. The temperature here is up and down, 40 one day and 75 the next. It works good for the large area we have it in, a front room dining room area. Its a little pricey but so far so good. We have used it about a month.

the temperature gage on this product cant be used unless you put it in maximum 1500. if you want to put it in 900 mode you cant regulate the temperature. also when you turn it off and turn if back on instead of being in low it is in high. so if the electricity goes out in the middle of the night i would have to reset it to low. i think it should be able to maneuver more easily and it doesnt. i was very disappointed.

Not a great review.

Mine broke within the first few hours. The thermal cutoff switch kept tripping. Everything checked out (airflow, clearance, voltage, etc), so we suspected it was just a defective/too sensitive thermal cutoff switch (cutting out at too low of a temp).

Unfortunately, my research could not find any available parts. Called Dimplex, and they confirmed the defect and advised returning to Amazon (thanks Amazon for easy return!). Dimplex also confirmed that they don't make parts available for the heater and don't have a service center available to repair. Ie, this is a throw away heater series.

Glad I realized this now, while I could still return and buy another brand. Would have been really upset to learn this 5 yrs from now when something else broke.

My research showed that StelPro models come with parts list and parts are available through them, at least. I'm ordering one of those (too bad Amazon doesn't carry...).

Also note the unit seems nice, had it worked. But it does sit off the wall more than the pictures seemed to me.

Also, mine said made in France. Not USA as another post stated.

Good luck!

This is the only one nice contemporary European looking heater made in USA.

I was searching for heaters on-line since 2006, when I bought a house, and all the heaters available at Home Depot and Lowes are ugly baseboards with 300 years-old look. I understand, I am in Queen's New England, old-fashion area, but even on-line it was nothing.

Later I found Canadian Stelpro SC "Electronic Convectors", but they are expensive. I install them on my second floor.

This season I was going to buy a few more for my first floor and I did search again and I found this Dimplex heaters.

I was really surprised that it's American! Finally! Some progress in America!

I installed them (it's really easy) and I am using my programmable thermostat and external relays to control them. I simply set heater's thermostat to max.

It's been a month since and I am really pleased with look and performance. Quiet, fast, nice.

Thanks Dimplex!

There are lots of reviews here, but only one mentions the noisy transformer problem, so I would like to share my experience with that.

We purchased our first queen Soft Heat mattress pad from Costco about 6 to 8 years ago. At that time, the electrical connector on the pad was smaller than it is on newer versions. After a couple of years, we noticed a faint burnt odor and saw that the connectors had become brown. We contacted Soft Heat, and they immediately sent us a replacement mattress pad with new controllers and an updated connector that was significantly larger. We have not had a problem with the connectors since then.

However, at some point we started noticing a strange noise in the middle of the night. It sounded sort of mechanical and sort of melodic, sometimes like an ink jet printer in the distance, or sometimes kind of like a telephone dial tone. It was one of those sounds that is really hard to locate the source of. It was quiet enough that we thought it was coming from farther away. Finally, weeks later, we held the Soft Heat transformers up to our ears and realized that they were causing the noise. Even when the mattress pad was turned off the noise would be there, and could only be stopped by unplugging the transformers.

We contacted Soft Heat, and they immediately sent us replacement transformers. The replacements also had the noise problem. We contacted Soft Heat again, and they said that their engineers were aware of the noise problem, and were working on a solution. This was maybe in 2008. A recent reviewer stated that the transformers are still noisy as of March 2010.

We decided to plug the transformers into power strip next to the bed, so we could switch them off in the middle of the night. This solved the noise problem in an inconvenient and inelegant way.

If it weren't for the noise, this would be a five star review. They heat well, and we don't feel the wires when we sleep.

The noise is subtle, and it's possible we only noticed it because our street was super quiet at night. But, once we heard it, we found it hard to get to sleep until we had stopped it.

Based on my experience, most if not all of the Soft Heat transformers make a noise. I think other reviewers should hold the transformers up to their ears and report back on any noise they hear.

The good: the concept is awesome you push the button when you start getting ready for bed. The first 15 minutes the unit goes to high and the sheets are toasty warm when you hop in then the unit goes to the setting you selected. Both my wife and I found that LO or 1 was plenty! If you get up in the morning and forget to turn it off... it then turns off after 10 hours. All in all terrific concept and warms things right up.

The bad: the transformers... since the unit is DC there are transformer boxes that sit on the floor. The issue here with both transformers is the high pitch whine / buzz that they make when converting AC to DC. That sound is made worse by the on/off cycling that the unit does based on the temp setting (cycles off more on LO than on HI). There is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it short of unplugging.

The awful: The manufacturer said some sound is "normal" and since both units do it it must be normal. So back to Amazon it went.

Very disappointing because it was nice getting into bed with warm sheets but then not being able to fall asleep because of the horrible sounds... well... you get the point.

Best Deals on Soft Heat Warming Mattress Pad

This product could not be improved upon. It is soft, you feel no wires. It has a wide range of heat settings. I have not gone higher than 6, which is quite warm, but 1 is very mild, barely perceptible. Although it's a little pricey, I am not sorry I sprang for it, as it allows me to do with minimal heating of the room over night. I'm also happy about the reputation for safetybecause it is always stretched flat, it cannot bunch into a ball, overheat and catch fire as an electric blanket can. Also, unlike how it is with an electric blanket, the heat feels as if diffused throughout the bed, rather than localized in the heat source.

Honest reviews on Soft Heat Warming Mattress Pad

I love this product. I have ordered this mattress warmer for each family member. This warmer never has hot spots. I have had mine, just over 5 years,I wash it as directed at least twice a year. However I never put it in the dryer.I have a new one waiting in case mine goes out , I will have another ready to go.

When I had this warmer for a little over a year, the power box quit working. I notified the company , and had a replacement with in a week.I never want to sleep in a bed that doesn't have this warmer. Any one buying this product will find it much better than an electric blanket.

and safer too.

Everyone loves this pad except for the "transformer noise". The purpose of this review is to explain what is going on and how to remove the noise.

What everyone is calling a transformer is actually a switching power supply. A switching power supply does indeed have a small transformer in it, but the transformer is operating at 14-20 kHz (cycles per second), which allows it to be relatively small. The sound put out by a switching power supply is such a high frequency that many people will not be able to hear it at all. That is why some people say they hear nothing at all while others are bothered by it. My guess is those who find the noise annoying are people who do not listen to lots of rock music. Those of us who listen to loud music have long since lost the ability to hear sounds above 15 kHz.

If you own one of these blankets and wish to get rid of the sound, put a large soup bowl or other bowl over it. The bowl size must be large enough to avoid an overheating of the enclosed powersupply. First time you try this, check to make sure the power supply is not getting too warm. High frequencies will not escape from underneath the bowl provided the power supply is on a carpet or placed on a hand towel.

A safer alternative to the bowl approach is to find a one foot piece of metal pipe with a diameter large enough to put the power supply inside. The pipe will not transmit the high frequencies effectively, and should remove the noise. If you can still hear the sound, try putting a hand cloth in the end facing out. The pipe should be metal to avoid resonating with the power supply.

Finally, if all else fails, buy an acid rock CD and listen to it full blast with earphones. I promise you will not notice the "transformer noise" again.

We use kerosene heaters all the time during the cold Missouri winters. I have a large 23,000 BTU heater (the most common style you see in the hardware stores) and I have a radiant 10,600 BTU that we use all of the time. I found my 23,000 BTU heater to be too much of a kerosene sipper so I wanted another smaller unit for my downstairs so I opted on this one. This model is advertised as being a convective AND radiant kerosene heater. I will tell you straight up, the reason they are also calling it radiant heater is because there is no housing around the flame and you do get some but very little radiant heat from this heater. Most of the heat is convective wherein it warms the air coming from the top of it. The main reason I decided on this heater was I liked the fact that I could see the flame. It's fun to watch a flame burn while you are sitting there relaxing on the couch. This heater is pretty easy to operate. Fill up the tank (about a gallon of kero), wait an hour and push the ignition button. (don't forget to install the batteries for the ignition). Now, the biggest problem I have with this heater is the control knob. You turn the knob clockwise to raise the wick. Just like with any kerosene heater, after it has warmed up and the kerosene is vaporizing more efficiently, you need to adjust the wick (i.e. lower it) because the flame starts growing too high. You need to maintain about a 1/2 inch flame around the burner (too high of flame, you get soot and smell from burning too rich...think of a candle with too long of a wick). This heater, unlike your larger convective kerosene heaters, gives you almost no play whatsover to lower the wick and you must, while holding onto the knob, press the off button, which releases the wick. Other heaters are designed to give you enough play with the knob to lower the wick w/o having to use the release/off button. So, getting it to lower just right is a pain. It usually lowers too much or you end of with the wick contracting completely and have to start from ground level again. Now, it's not THAT big of a deal (for me anyway), just a minor irritation. I can live with it. But it may be a bit too troublesome for someone who isn't experienced with kerosene heaters. I still enjoy the heater, it warms a bedroom or living area very nicely without sucking so much kerosene like the bigger guys, but if you do decide to purchase this, be ready to fight with the wick a little to get it lowered after it's burning. They need to redesign the clockwork mechanism with that knob. Besided that, I like everything else. It's fun to be able to watch the flame dance around. The fuel guage is nice to let you know how your kero supply is doing. The carrying handle is well built and it's not too heavy to carry around even with a full tank of kero like the bigger units. I rate this unit a straight B. It would be an A+ if it weren't for that knob.

Basically I like the heater. It looks to be the smallest I could find in the US. Maybe, though, I should have gone with one named 'alpaca' shipped from Korea which would have cost $175. in total. I light the heater outside, wait for it to warm up and bring it inside. Then take it outside to shutoff because they smell bad. The wick knob ratchet DID NOT work at all on my heater! The plastic release lever was not connected to anything! I cut the hooks off on both ends of the spring on this adjuster and now I can adjust the wick and simply turn the knob all the way counterclockwise to shut it off. I called World Marketing and told them I want some refund in price because it didn't work at all and there were already other complaints. She told me she wasn't giving me any refund. The instruction on assembly are not good and don't describe how to install the wick well. I have a CO detector just above my wood stove door and see it works every time I open the door. These kerosene heaters need to be operated in a narrow range or they'll produce CO and smell. This woman tried to tell me CO is made from re-burning CO2. She has it backwards-I could look this up and calculate the change in energy states of each reaction if need be. I give this product and WM zero stars. I've seen this before. Some importers think they can make a good profit for themselves and all they have to do is import stuff from China or wherever and don't even inspect to see if the parts fit together.

Ordered this for my wife for Christmas. She always wanted a fireplace in our bedroom and this was the way to go. I was excited...the package arrived before Christmas as promised and voila! No fireplace. The item came with just the mantle. The mantle is well made and fairly easy to assemble. As I unpacked the box I assumed the heater would be in the box. Nope. Nada. Zilch. I called Amazon and they were great in helping me resolve the problem. According to them, the item was under review, so hopefully it is fixed and the heater is included.

What threw me off was the BTU's given in the description...not too many mantles I know of have BTU's unless the heater is included! The item shipped was the mantle only and no electric fireplace. Hopefully Amazon found the heaters!

I too only received the mantle the first time I ordered. I called Amazon and told them that the firebox was missing and that there had to be 2 boxes because all of the order would not fit in one. They sent me another one and it did come with the firebox. I have it in my bedroom and it looks very nice. It has 3 levels of flame and 5 levels of heat on thermostat. They also work independently of each other and that was very important to me. I found this at other stores for much more money plus tax and shipping so it's a really good deal if they can get the order right.

Mantle looks nice and as described with easy assembly.

However, I believe the item description is wrong. Firebox is not included with this item. I ordered 3 different times after not receiving the firebox and each time a new one was sent all you get is the mantle and not the firebox/heater. I even had one shipped from manufacture and no firebox. I believe there should be two boxes as part of this delivery or the item description is wrong and you are only getting a mantle.

Got this oil heater from Target a month ago. I was dubious about these types of heater because of the smell. I placed it in the patio for 3 hours and brought it into the garage for another 2. The next day the garage still had some smell. Took it inside to the family room and the smell was all gone! I used the 1500W setting to burn of the smell but tripped the line plug switch. I only use the 600W & 900W setting for cost reasons.

I purchased this Holmes oil-filled radiator at our local store. I've owned several different brands of oil-filled heaters over the years. My first one was a Lakewood and it was an excellent heater. They don't seem to be available anymore. My second was a Honeywell with digital controls, likewise an excellent heater while it lasted. I also tried and returned two different DeLonghi heaters. Both DeLonghi heaters continued to put out irritating fumes even after the break in period. Alas, that was also the fate of this Holmes heater.

I unboxed the Holmes and set it outside, plugged it into the outdoor outlet and let it run on high for more than an hour. When I brought it inside it was still putting out fumes, but they didn't seem too noxious just a low level odor of warm plastic. My mistake. By bedtime, I didn't feel so good. The next morning I awoke with a headache. When I left the house my headache went away. When I came back, so did the headache. I turned the heater down to the 900 watt setting so I couldn't detect any more odor; however, the next day my headache was much worse and I was feeling nauseated. The Holmes was packed up and returned immediately!

I'm sticking with the Honeywell HZ-709, also available at Target. I brought one home and cranked it up the same day I returned the Holmes. It's running right now and I'm perfectly comfortable. I swear it puts out more heat. Best of all no fumes! It costs more, but it's worth the price. Apparently Kaz (the manufacturer) cares enough to use better quality materials which can withstand the heat without continually outgassing toxic fumes into the air you breathe. You can see my review of the Honeywell on its product page. Honeywell HZ-709 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater with Digital Controls Thanks for reading my review(s). I hope they are helpful.

Best Deals on Holmes HOH3000 Oil Filled Heater

I bought this item from Target on special offer as I thought this would be a useful background heater to boost the room temperature. It was easy to set up, simply clipping the wheels onto the bottom of the unit using the clamps which are tightened by hand.

The radiator has a variable thermostat to control the temperature and two separate power settings which can be combined to make a third. Settings are 600W, 900W or 1500W (both heater units on).

The surface of this radiator does get very hot, which is what it's designed to do, so I am not sure about the meaning of the phrase in the description that it has "specially engineered thermal fins to maximize heat flow, yet have a low surface temperature".

The radiator is easy to move on the wheels BUT I take away one star as it would be useful to have insulated handles on both sides of the radiator so that it can be lifted when hot, and not just one side for wheeling.

This shortcoming was noticeable when I had to move the hot radiator downstairs and so had to carry it with one hand on the insulated handle and the other on the opposite wheels. The unit is not particularly heavy so this was not a big problem, just an inconvenient design.

Other reviewers remarked that the radiator smelled bad, but we have not noticed this at all.

Overall I would recommend this product.

Honest reviews on Holmes HOH3000 Oil Filled Heater

I don't like any of the heaters that have coils in them that glows red, just something about naked heat that scares me, therefore I decided to get one of these old fashioned oil filled heaters. I say old fashioned because these are the type of heaters that I see in old houses or pictures of the old days.

I too don't like the smell of burning radiators so before I plugged it in, I checked all around to see every like piece of packing plastic was removed and when I turned it on I did not get any burning plastic smell. There was some new smell of hot metal, but after a short time it went away.

Heatwise, I'm very pleased with this. I'm using it to heat a small room that doesn't have double paned glass and with this heater I don't even need to turn it on high. I just use the 900W button and turn the dial about 1/2 way and I'm fine. The heater does get pretty hot so I'm careful not to touch any metal parts. The best part about these oil filled heaters with a fan or any moving parts is that it's quiet.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this heater.

This was bought for our local baseball snack shack-looked like a decent product and wasn't the least expensive. Sadly within 3 weeks the kettle didn't work. since it had been over 30 days since ordered we had to deal directly with the manufacturer...which goes by the alias of DTI international. No way you'll ever get anyone on the phone-after calling the service number you get a recording in less than 15 seconds saying all operators are busy and leave a message. It took a series of emails back and forth with the "service area" and $375 of useless junk. If you're considering a popcorn unit, spend more money and stay away from Great Northern, because they will stay away from you.

This machine was bought for our elementary school's use. We have used it every week for over a month now. We use it one day per week popping around 12 batches each time. It does an amazing job & we have never had a problem. We clean it thoroughly each week, only complaint is the bottom piece is not removable like others we have used. This makes it a little argavating to get the popcorn on the bottom. After weeks of use the small screws on top did get loose but all you need to do it tighten them. All in all it was a great value since the others we looked at cost 2x as much.
