Review of ElectroWarmth Heated Mattress Pads

I'm a big fan of heated mattress pads (vs electric blankets). They seem to last longer (I've had several electric blankets break in the last few years), the heat is more even, and I like the heat from below rather than above. I've used an electric mattress pad on my own bed for several years now and been very happy with it. I picked up this twin-size pad for my 8 year old son, who was envious of my warm bed. He loves it! We turn it on about 15 minutes before bed, and he always climbs into a warm bed. We usually turn it off after he gets into bed, but on some cold nights he's left it on "Low" and gone right to sleep. It's a great feeling to have a warm bed, especially when the house is cold!

Update, 3 years later:

Unlike other electric blankets and mattress warmers I've purchased over the last 15 or so years, this one is STILL heating like new! I do have a couple of gripes that may or may not be issues for you:

The skirt that keeps the warmer snug against the mattress is a bit flimsy. After seasonally changing it a few times, the stitching ripped out along one edge. Ever since, I've been careful to treat it gently, and it hasn't gotten worse, so just remember to actually walk around your mattress to remove it from each corner, and don't try to whip it off the corners from the opposite side of the bed. But this isn't why I've lowered my rating.

You can't use this warmer with a timer or any sort of remote-operated outlet (like a home-automation, x-10, z-wave, insteon, or wifi outlet, or even a switched outlet). If the power to your outlet has been off, and gets switched on, the warmer still has to be manually turned on with its controls. Why is this a big issue for me? Well, I've been installing home-automation switches and outlets so that I can turn devices on and off with my iPhone, and this is definitely one of those devices that I want to control remotely (or even put on a timer). I frequently forget to trudge upstairs and turn the warmer on an hour before bed, and I'd like to be able to do it while watching TV downstairs, or simply have the knowledge that a simple timer will do it for me. Hence, I'm dinging them, in the hope that you, like I, find 3-star reviews to be the ones with the most helpful information for otherwise potentially great products.

I spoke with an Electrowarmth representative who said that this feature has been requested (although infrequently), and that she knew of no plans to alter the functionality. If this feature is important to you, please call them and request it!

Having tired of climbing into a cold bed during the winter and having to crank up the expensive to run furnace, I was interested in a quality heated mattress pad.

Suffice it to say, Electrowarmth delivers a fine quality USA made safe product that works exactly as advertised. It warms to set temp in about 10 minutes or so and keeps it constant all night. The fully electronic control means no annoying clicks and it is softly lit when you press the temperature buttons. The light glows for about 10 or so seconds then goes off.

The unit will run 10 hours once you turn it on. If you turn off but leave it plugged in, it will remember your last setting from L to H with 1-9 in between.

The only disadvantage I can see is the fact the wiring on the control means it is placed backward on the nightstand.

Given the fact I sleep with a comforter and a cotton top blanket, the setting marked 4 is more than enough to warm the mattress.

The cords are amply long to reach from bottom of bed to unit and still reach an outlet close by. It is machine washable and UL listed.

I recommend this product made in America, highly.

I purchased this queen mattress pad because it had the option of having only one remote and that's what I really wanted. It was intended to be for my second home as I already have one in my main home. When I opened this pad today I could immediately feel the wires in it right through the fabric. It also has a big direction/warning sheet (approx 6x8 in size) that's made of very stiff paper right on the top corner of the pad so when you are in bed, it would end up being right under your pillow where you could certainly feel it (and hear it) through your sheet. After paying twice the amount as I did my original mattress pad, I would expect at least equal or better quality. This one is already in the package to be returned. The cheaper pads out there are far better than this one!

The pad is well construced. The duel control for the full size bed was a must and glad to have found one. The heating is great. But we have a problem. We can't keep the bottom sheet in place due to the shiny and slippery covering of the pad. It is a constant battle. Every time one of us turns over or moves around the sheet either bunches up or comes off the edges, top, bottom or sides. Very aggravating. We would like to have a solution. We have tried different sheet fabrics.

Works well, warms the bed nice... one review said the tag was on the top, and they could feel it while sleeping. Ours is at the bottom, don't even know it's there. Wires are barely noticeable.

Bought this about 6 weeks ago and use it almost every day to make tea or dissolve soup base. It heats 5 cups of room temperature water to boiling in 6 minutes and 20-something seconds. The max capacity is about 5-1/2 cups (1.2 L). I don't know if it boils water any faster than a kettle on the stove, but it's nice that it shuts itself off when the water boils. The on/off switch is on the top of the handle. There's an indicator light on the left side (handle to your right) to show that it's on.

The interior is stainless steel with the small exception of the sight tube. The plastic sight tube marked in liters faces the inside of the handle. The location makes it a little awkward to read the sight tube. Two small plastic rivets visible inside are the openings to the site tube and hold the handle on, but I don't detect any trace of a plastic taste. Only the bottom rivet is ever immersed in water. The top rivet is above the maximum capacity of the pot. That rivet and the sight tube are the only plastic parts that make direct contact with boiling water.

The base design allows the pot to be set in any direction on the base. I noticed the heating element is a semi-circle along the bottom of the pot towards the spout. This allows the water to set up a convection current from the hot front to the "cooler" back. I think that helps the water heat faster.

The pot makes a moderate roaring sound for a few minutes as the water above the heating element boils and the bubbles collapse, but it's not annoying. I find it pleasant. The water in the pot makes a satisfying bubbling sound just before the pot quietly switches itself off.

The plastic lid latches shut with a gentle push, and it's easily released in a natural motion by pulling with your thumb on the release at the top of the handle. The lid cannot be tilted back far enough to stay open, which I consider a small inconvenience when filling the pot.

I think the product could be improved if the sight tube were relocated to the side above the indicator light, made of glass instead of plastic, the rivets holding the handle were also stainless steel, and the lid could stay open to make filling a little easier. Also, if I were left-handed, I would like an indicator light on the other side of the pot when the handle is to the left and the right side is facing me. Add those improvements, and it won't sell as inexpensively as it does. There's always a trade off.

It's a nice looking pot that does it's job well.

FYI: Sept 13, 2011. The pot sprang a leak yesterday and I see no way to repair it. Seems to be leaking where the lower end of the sight tube exits the side of the pot. I'm not inclined to buy another Tayama, but I haven't made a decision.

I bought this kettle just a few months ago, and within the first month or so, it stopped shutting off automatically. We could live with that, but then last week it stopped turning on, which makes it just a tad more difficult to use. I cannot recommend this kettle. It's also got a kind of finicky capacity range you have to hit above the minimum and below the (not very generous) max, a bit of a bother. Skip it.

i'm disappointed that it won't shut-off. that makes it too dangerous for me to want to use. also, when you put down the pot after getting water the kettle stays on which is also hazardous in my book.

This in-wall digital timer is definately an upgrade from the old rotary timers I grew up with. However, installation is a little difficult as its size is as large as the common in-wall mounting box leaving very little room for the wires and connectors. I definately recommend this product though if you are confident in installation or are paying someone to install it for you.

After searching, I found the timer that will work with LED lights. Works great and was easy to install. One thing is that timer is large (deep) so will be very tight if your junction box is not full size. Many exterior walls against concrete block walls (CBS) use smaller boxes. It will fit but there is not a lot of extra room.

First of all the quality is great. Nicely built. Has a mechanical on/off switch which is essential if you are planning on placing this on a timer like I did. The problem I have with it is that it simply doesn't get hot enough. Does get warm, or maybe tepid. Certainly not like that right out of the dryer feeling.It does allow wet towels, placed on it, to dry faster.

I did buy another cheaper model for $68 at a local retailer because it had 3 settings. None were hotter. It also had an electronic on/off switch which didn't work with a timer. Its quality was cheap plastic as well.

Overall I would not buy another as the amount of warmness is not worth this price.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program We moved into an older home that has no air conditioning, high ceilings, no insulation, and louvered windows. This is in the eastern edges of LA county, in a valley, where it gets pretty hot during the summer and occasionally other times of the year (it was 103 yesterday, for instance, a record high).

When we moved here I got a Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with Heater (ARC-14SH) for my office, which is at one end of this ranch style home.

I'm a big fan of the Whynter. It worked fine in the heat, never quite cooling the whole room, but certainly giving a blast of cold air where I needed it. The room was at fault, so I don't blame the unit. In fact, later in the summer we moved it in the bedroom to supplement a far too small window unit. The room got downright chilly. It started cooling down and I moved the unit into our babies room, with the heater function keeping the room at a steady temperature throughout the relatively cool winter months. Now that its getting hot again, I was torn about moving the unit out of her room. She needs it cool in hot weather for the sake of all our sanity.

So, I was looking for an addition. The goofiness of our windows and lack of ability to do home repair projects tends to cancel out window units. This one looked like a good choice so I went for it.

Which do I recommend, this Honeywell or the Whynter? Well, both have 14000 BTU cooling, with equivalent cooling power, I look at other issues. And there's no clear stand out. The Honeywell is a bit smaller, and I the vent is more variable. Though, you can't quite enjoy the full force of it hitting you. Both units prefer to vent upwards. The vent on the Whynter just closes off, never getting a horizontal direction worth noting. The Honeywell does allow for more horizontal flow, but when you close the vent to focus it horizontal, it opens a gap in the back of the vent, with about half the power or more still directed upwards.

The big difference is in the air flow in and out. Both units have a standard sized intake and exhaust, but the Honeywell, for some reason, only comes with one hose and a window adapter with one slot. This creates a possible vacuum situation, where air is being sucked in from inside the room and sent outside, which means that air has to come in from somewhere else, a crack in the window or something like that. My office is old enough this isn't an issue, but it might create a problem for other situations, and some people highly recommend always using a dual hose setup. The Honeywell, again, allows for this, but doesn't come with the attachments for it. And the attachments are surprisingly expensive unless you're able and willing to patch together your own. The Whynter comes with two hoses and a window adapter with two slots, and caps in case you're not using one, leaving a one or two hose situation optional.

The window attachment on the Honeywall is fairly shorter. I only have to take off one of my louvered window panels, while the Whynter requires me taking off two. However, the Honeywell adapter uses pegs and slots to tighten in length. Unfortunately for those with nonstandard windows, like me, the pegs don't match up, and I have to jerry rig a way to keep the adapter secure in the window.

The remote works fine, and the display and buttons on the unit are pretty much the same for both units.

Which would I recommend. Well, again, the Honeywell is a bit smaller and that might be an issue. It also seems to handle water a bit better. The Whynter has a water tray and plug that's terribly inconvenient. Too low to put a bowl by, too high to really drain the inside pan. Have to tip it and finagle it. Fortunately, we live in a generally low humidity environment, but on those rainy days in winter I was having to empty the Whynter every couple of days, taking and lifting it into the shower.

But the Whynter does have that heater. So, there's a bit more bang for the price.

I like both and am happy I don't have to pick between them for my own use.

ADDED: Got pretty hot here the other day, had the air conditioner on. Was quite dismayed to see a trail of water coming from this Honeywell unit, leaving a puddle on my hard floor. Have no idea what was happening, as it wasn't leaking from any of the plugs, just coming from the bottom of the unit itself. I live in SoCal, so humidity isn't an issue, and if it's leaking because of that here, then I have to worry about how it will leak in higher humidity areas.

Unit appears well-made compared to the other junk out there. Interface is slick, and remote is somewhat useful. Three problems:

Unit is LOUD, even on lowest fan setting. It is a bit louder than most window-mounted units, and is about the same volume as those fan coil units installed in cheap motels. I have to use earplugs, and others have refused to sleep in the room with it on.

Unit works, but no way it is 14k BTUs! Cools more like a 6-8k unit. I have a 480sf bedroom and on a hot day (80's) it takes hours to cool down the room. Granted I have high ceilings though.

Remote control works to turn unit on & off, and to set timer (a neat feature although very coarsely-implemented). I have yet to reliably use it for anything else. Basically in middle of ight when you can't take the noise anymore you can shut it off without getting out of bed.

I have a 500 sq. foot (lower level) apartment in the city and I'm not pleased with the way this unit cooled. I expected a lot more based on the BTUs and price paid. It is also extremely noisy. I would not recommend it.

Two problems.

1) the unit had evidently been jarred significantly during shipping, as the metal grate below the top vent had come loose and was rubbing on the main fan, causing it to sound like a blender. I removed the grate entirely and things are much quieter.

2) Be careful and measure your window before committing. The window assembly will only expand so far, and it lacked a good 18 inches of coverage on our window. Luckily I had some leftover stuff from a previously failed air conditioner and was able to hack together something that worked. The little plastic screw thing is really not sufficient the old unit had sturdy wing nuts. Poor design here.

All that being said, the thing seems to be cooling the room well, which is the primary purpose. Too bad they couldn't avoid dropping it off of the loading dock or whatever happened.

There's not much to say if you own an espresso machine, you need this. Every time the machine boils water, any minerals fall out of solution the harder your water the more minerals resulting in sluggish performance as the heating element now has to heat through "stone". Used regularly, your machine will run as good as new, without the horrible smell and aftertastes of other decalcifiers, such as vinegar.

I used this descaler on my Tassimo machine. I worked fine and I am sure did the trick.

I wanted to write this review to warn everyone out there that this product will stain your granite counter tops. I had no idea. I set the bottle on my black granite and later found a stain in the shape of the ring left behind from the solution. Needless to say that I am totally bummed and saddened that my granite is ruined. This is the descaler recommended by my espresso maker. It works well, kind of expensive (well anything would be expensive compared to vinegar and water). I use the discarded solution to soak inside my electric teakettle before discarding so I do get twice the use out of each bottle. Recommend buying in multiple quantities to save on shipping.

I don't know why Amazon.com is using a drawing of a bathroom vanity instead of a photo of this great little heat panel. Visit other sites to see what it really looks like. Photos show it as a grey panel with rounded corners. This is accurate, but what the photos don't show is that the front surface is covered with a soft, felt-like covering which adds to the warmth of this little gem. The back is just metal. It heats up quickly and silently and radiates warmth almost instantly. It would easily fit under a desk. It's hard to believe it only uses 150 watts of electricity. I like this unit better than others I've looked at, since it comes with attachable feet and the on/off switch has a red light to remind you that it's on. The switch and light are on the right side and can be easily seen from the front. I'm very pleased with it. But keep in mind, it's meant to be close to you, and it probably won't help heat up an entire room. Still, the warmth it radiates is impressive.

Wonderful, warm, safe, uses barely any electricity, and adds just that right amount of warmth to one person (on top of normal house heating). Great if you have one person in a household who gets cold, but the other people are not cold. Great if you sit at a desk all day and want a heat source near you that is safe. I purchased this for under my desk in my home office as my feet are always cold.

It works "okay" and emits a constant, small, soothing amount of heat, but does not get real warm.

I was finding myself pulling it between my legs. Then it felt much warmer. (Heat comes out both sides.)

I was sensible when I purchased it knowing that it is only 150 Watts ... there is only so much heat that a unit of that size will throw.

What I did next was the "ticket" to total and complete warmth for my feet under my desk!

After this purchase, I purchased a heated floor mat. (Foot Warmer – Cozy Toes – 18"W x 19"D x 1/2"H)

That floor mat product is excellent and gets very warm.

I now use the 2 products together and I'm extremely happy.

This heating panel is definitely better than nothing, but If I could recommend one or the other, it would be the floor mat. It emits much more heat directly to the feet.

This is a great little heater if you need to heat a small enclosed space or simply provide some extra warmth to an area. I use this heater for my birds. I was forced to move them into the basement and this heater allowed me to do that without compromising their health. The birds can bathe, relax, and play without getting too cold or too hot. There is no temperature adjustment but, really, it doesn't need it. The front gets hot but not enough to really catch fire or burn someone right away. Although, leaving your hand there for a few seconds might result in a minor burn. The lighted on/off switch is a nice touch. Overall, I like it so far... we'll see how long it lasts.

I got this product because I live in an attic space and need the extra heat in the winter at night. Well, first of all this thing is loud. If you're a light sleeper, don't get this. Second, if you even scoot it along the floor (not even tilting it but just scooting), it shuts off. Every time the heat goes on or off depending on the thermostat, there's a loud beep. If you scoot it, there's a loud beep. If you do anything to it there is a loud beep. This heater is very annoying and I will soon be replacing it.

When my old Lasko heater died (the one whose remote control button function locations did not match the same function locations on the similar-shaped control panel on the unit a stupid design error), I looked for a different brand model heater that came with a remote control.

I thought I had found a reasonable substitute in this model, until I set it up and ran through the functions on the remote control, supposedly "the same functions as included on the control panel".

Guess what highly useful feature that I use frequently when I wish to adjust my heater before falling asleep withOUT getting out of bed got left OFF the remote control that comes with this machine:

THE TIMER.

THERE IS NO TIMER SETTING ON THE REMOTE CONTROL.

Whatever other features this machine has that might be nice, this machine is functionally useless to me, and I must return it.

Temperature sensor was bad on my heater...intermittently. This happen a couple of months after the purchase and Delonghi would not respond to my email.

Currently, the heater is broken (1.5 year old). The heater automatically turns off after a couple of minutes, in which it does not put out any heat during those few minutes. I'm shopping for a new heater now...hopefully the Lasko doesn't fail me.

Pros: small/easily placed, quiet fan, rotation (can be turned off), effective heat (at least for small space (area around a desk chair); I have not tried a large space), low price (I paid $40 from J&R)

Cons: high-pitched loud beep that sounds every time you change anything, including upon turning on and turning off, fan has only medium and high settings, no low setting

If you want a thermostat-controlled fan space heater then this is good for the price. If you want something with adjustable heat, this is not it. Heat is either on or off, depending on the temperature you set and the temperature that the heater's thermostat measures. If you want a little extra heat where you are sitting (e.g. chilly office), this is NOT a good solution because instead of providing a steady, low supply of heat that you can adjust according to your environment, the heater will just keep turning on and off according to the temperature setting. Every on and off is accompanied by a loud beep not really appropriate in an office.

If I had known that every change in setting and every on and off would be accompanied by a loud beep, I would not have bought this product.

This space heater apparently also acts as a space cooler-you might want to confirm that.
