Cheap Honeywell HZ-690 7 Fin Oil Filled Radiator Heater

I got a one-month propane bill for $300 this winter and I hadn't even had the house comfortably warm. Overwhelmed at the cost of the bill, I sought an alternative. Since it was an exceptionally cold winter, it seemed there were no heaters to be found anywhere. Locating one at a Target, I purchased it as the only option available to me.

It was such a toasty, seep-into-your-bones kind of warm I decided to buy a second one. This has kept me very comfortable. It's such a welcome heating choice. Even my cat loves it. I can find her snuggled RIGHT next to one or the other of the heaters. It's a safe kind of heater too. Sometimes the cat will actually curl into contact with the heater. She'll sleep quite happily there until at last she gets too hot. When that happens she leaps away from the heater, giving me a very dirty look like it was all my fault. Silly cat.

The BIG advantage though is the cost savings. My $300 propane refill bill went to $0 (my tank hasn't needed refilling yet!) My electric bill did go up though (as one would naturally expect). The electric bill? $30 higher than the previous month!

So in effect, I purchased two of these heaters and paid $30 more in electricity and still came out ahead of that horrendous propane bill of the month before. From $300 for heating to $30.

YEAH!

With the cost of natural gas way up last winter, I wanted to see if I could save money by using supplemental heating in some parts of the house. I bought this one to use in my daughter's bedroom at night because I figured it was safer than a coil heater.

The Honeywell 690 has more than met my expectations. It is odorless and silent (except a very quiet click when the thermostat goes on and off), easy to adjust and move around, and on its lowest setting (which I use exclusively), it is hot, but not too hot to touch. I'm able to turn the house furnace down as low as I dare (to about 50...don't want to freeze my pipes) while my daughter stays nice and cozy in her bedroom. And I really didn't notice any increase in my electric bill. But while everyone I know was passing out over their gas bills, mine was quite reasonable all winter.

The nature of an oil-filled heater is that it takes time to heat a room, but then it does a fantastic job of keeping the temperature steady. You don't have a super hot zone right next to the heater with it cold everywhere else. In areas where we want quick, brief periods of heat (bathroom, kitchen table), I'm using fan-assisted coil heaters. But in rooms where the occupants will be spending hours (bedrooms, family room, home office), the slow, steady heat of the Honeywell 690 is perfect.

I was so pleased with how well this performed last winter, I'm going to get one for my bedroom this winter.

Note: If you buy one and it has anything beyond maybe a slight smell the first hour of usage, take it back for an exchange. I'm very sensitive to odors, and I never smelled anything with this heater.

It takes a few hours on the high setting, but it can warm up my small basement real good. Then I turn it to medium or low during the night, so I can get out of bed real comfortable in the morning. Dandy thing.

First a little info about portable ACs, then I will review the Haier 8000 BTU.

No portable will EVER match a window AC of the same BTU, so if you have the option to install a window unit, you should do so. A window unit will be cooler and use less power. Here is why:

A single hose unit means the hose will exhaust hot air thru the hose. But it needs an intake source of air the intake will be from the room itself so you are taking the air that you just cooled and exhausting it out the window.

Next, the exhaust hose itself as noted by other reviewers, gets very hot. As hot as a radiator in the winter.

And the AC unit itself gets hot the portables have the entire unit inside the room so it is heating up the room. Window units have the working parts outside of the room so they don't heat up the room anywhere as much.

So now you are heating the room as well as dumping cold air out the exhaust.

This is why a portable can never be as efficient as a window unit. I think you would need at least twice the BTUs of a window unit to get the same cooling power. I think the manufacturer's of the portables give you a theoretical BTU rating but with the issues of exhausting cooled air and heat generated by the unit and from the exhaust you will never get the theoretical BTUs.

This is true for all single hose portables. Dual hose portables will be more efficient (good luck finding an inexpensive one), but still not as efficient as window units as they still have the issue of the exhaust hose emitting heat into the room. Putting insulation around the exhaust hose will help. But please do not use pink fiberglass wall insulation it's not very healthy for you if it is not completely sealed off ie inside a wall.

Now to the Haier itself:

The model I purchased CPRB08XCJ can be controlled without the remote all the buttons that are on the remote are also on the unit. The screws are not too short to attach the adapter to the panel you must put the screws in from the front the side facing inside the room. The instructions are pretty simple so maybe the other reviewers got an older version of the instructions or I have a different model.

Depending on the humidity, you will need to empty the unit. I had my unit on for 3 hours, and there was a lot of water when I drained it. Had I not drained it, I think the unit would have shut off once the tank was full; it is supposed to have an auto shut off. I drained it before it shut by itself.

I also tried connecting a drain hose but that was a minor disaster the fitting is just a nipple that you push a hose into (does not come with a hose) -it came loose and water got all over. It would be nice if Haier included a hose that threads onto the nipple.

The room I used it in is 8x12. The air coming out of the unit felt cool, and it cooled the room a bit but it did not cool the room well; on a scale of 1 to 10, I give it 4 on cooling, probably due to the issues mentioned above. To be fair, I used the unit on the hottest nights (so far) of this year it was above 90 degrees at night. I have not used the unit during the day yet haven't been home. I expect the unit will perform better this week, as the night temps will be in the 80s.

The unit does not have directional fins it only blows straight out. I did not think this would be an issue but it is: the exhaust hose is very stiff and it is hard to turn the unit to the direction you want it.

Also, be aware that the cord is about 6 feet long, and it is not recommended to use an extension cord. So make sure you can reach an outlet, while trying to keep the exhaust tube as shortened as possible. The closer you can get the unit to the window, the shorter the hose will be and thus the less heat will be emitted into the room.

As others have mentioned it is not easily moved from room to room you must wrangle with hose and the weight.

Overall, I do not think the cooling capacity of other single hose units will be much better. It would be a better unit if it had a separate intake hose, an included screw in drain hose, and directional fins. So an okay unit if you have no option to use a window AC, with some minor annoyances. I gave it 3 stars, but is really more like 2 and 1/2 stars.

I was in the market for a new air conditioner for my 12x15 bedroom, and upon reading the other customer reviews was sure that for the size, BTU, and price the Haier CPRB08XCJ 8000 was going to be the right fit for my needs. Upon setup and as I began using the product I ran into several issues.

The first was that the directions on setup and installation were unclear, even for such a seemingly simple process.

Secondly, while the air conditioner is said to cool a room up to 250-300 sq feet, it was struggling to cover my 180. And while it does seem to do a better job at dehumidifying than cooling, the amount of drainage from the collected water is unmanageable. The product was said to be mostly self-evaporating with a reservoir tank that will hold the excess. I was aware that the unit may need occasional drainage. I however am unable to run the unit for more than 3-4 hours before the tank is full and shuts itself off completely. Since I am using this in my bedroom there is no convenient way to drain the tank without either completely detaching it from its window fittings and rolling it into my bathroom, or allowing it to drain into pots or pans and carrying them to the kitchen sink. The other night, while I was sleeping, I attempted to just allow the unit to drain as it cooled into a spare aluminum casserole pan but the amount of water was so great that halfway through the night it had already begun overflowing. I'm going to try to find some rubber hose to fit to the drainage spout to put out my window, but without elevating the incredibly heavy unit I cant see how it will ever truly drain efficiently. I could forgive this extra inconvenience if the unit was effectively cooling my small room, but it is all around lackluster.

Thirdly I think calling this air conditioner portable is a little misleading. In order for me to move the unit into another room I need to unplug the unit from the wall, disconnect the exhaust hose, unscrew the window fitting to change the size and remove it from my window frame then transport the unit to the other room and refit the exhaust hose and window fittings . It doesn't sound like too much, but the whole process takes about 15-20 minutes. i suppose by purchasing several of the panels that go into the window frame I could keep those preinstalled into other windows in the house, but with all of the extra expense and hassle I just don't think this air conditioner is worth the fuss.

I had also tried researching some troubleshooting methods, but Haier doesn't even list this product on their website.

Lastly, because I purchased the air conditioner sponsored by amazon but sold by this company called Beach Audio I cannot return the product to amazon. Beach Audio has a 30 day return policy that excludes certain items including air conditioners regardless if they are defective or not. It was my mistake for not researching this before my purchase, but I was told that their return policy was 30 days and I didn't see the need to investigate it further.

I have two LG 9,000's for the bigger rooms which I LOVE but needed one a bit smaller for my babies room (the central AC is horrible at cooling upstairs!), so we got this one the other day and it is perfect. You don't need to drain it so I don't know what the previous review was talking about. It is self evaporating and uses it's own water cond. to cool itself. The window mount it much better then my LG's too. It's a very stylish and a small box AC that works wonderful and keeps me less stressed at night worrying about the comfort of my 18 month old at night. I have a thermostat reading in my room that tells me the temp in his room and this AC keep it exactly at what I wanted it to. Love it so far and recommend for sure!

Honest reviews on Haier Portable Air Conditioner, 8000 BTUs, CPRB08XCJ

I was looking for a good, small, and cheap portable unit to install upstairs in my gameroom, HOA does not allow for window units. This unit preforms fairly well for its size. It does not have a water collection bin through you must drain it through a hose, but I have a central unit that removes alot of the humidity.

The installation was fairly easy except for a few small problems, it comes with 4 tiny screws that are supposed to attach the exhaust hose to the window spacer, but they where not long enough, I had to use 4 tiny bolts and washers instead.

When installing it remember to keep the exhaust hose as straight as possible any bends reduce efficiency. Also I bought some insulating wrap form home depot and covered the exhaust hose. I used a temp gun and saw that the exhaust hose had a temp form 95-110 degrees. The window insert they give you is a joke also you should install some insulation around it also.

Update on review:now one year later moved to garden level in Brooklyn cools much better than on the 5th floor south side apartment but still doesn't cool a large room even with cool air coming out solution -a very good fan to circulate the air. It is a fabulous dehumidifier but handling the water without a nearby drain is a problem still emptying buckets adn working on a solution . . .perhaps a fish tank pump from the bucket out the window :-).

Original review: We needed an air conditioner for a small East Village apartment in New York City for one of our kids going to school there. The apartment windows are on the south side. The alternative to this kind of portable unit was to have (and pay) for the installation of a window bracket and still buy a unit so we gave it a try. It does a great job given the windows allow the blast of hot sunlight in the afternoon (curtains are bound to help).

There is NO issue with water drainage when it is just being used as an air conditioner. The unit auto-evaporates as it works. According the the manual you only need to worry about drainage when you have it in dehumidifier mode. NYC is plenty humid in the summer and there has been no problem with the unit which is humming along 24/7 for two weeks now.

It is wonderful not to have a window blocked with an air conditioner box or to worry about taking it out for winter (or covering well enough to keep out the cold). Things that would improve this unit: include small screws with nuts instead of sheet metal screws to attach the exhaust conduit to the plastic window 'sleeve' and toss in the box some standard foam window weather stripping to pad underneath the window-sleeve.

Does exactly what it is supposed to do. I used it to transfer rainwater from one 30 gallon bucket to others. Did 2-3 squeezes on pump bulb to start it, and it did the rest. Also used it just stuck in an unconnected garden hose to water some plants. For the money--you cannot beat it.

I have two of similar models (LH-873/G and LH-872), both with the same problem. The fan quits after about 45 minutes, resulting in the thermal protection activating. Once triggered, I have to manually turn the thermostat all the way down and then back up again to reset it. Turning the unit back on right away results in the same issue because the fan never activates. The unit has to sit for a while (not sure how long I never have the patience to test this thoroughly) before the fan will work again.

beautiful piece...not that hard to put together...got this piece last december but paid for itself during Hurricane Sandy... no power for 8 days and the weather dropped into the low 30's...with my mom being with us it (with the help of a generator) kept us warm until the power returned

Best Deals on Fresno Electric Fireplace in Black

First of all, this thing is heavy. I hope you have a friend to call to help you get it in the house. I seriously feel bad for the FedEx guy who delivered it.

Second, I really appreciate the effort that went into the packaging. Every edge of the box containing the wood parts was stiffened by a hard length of heavy laminated cardboard. Inside the box, every piece was wrapped in a lightweight shipping fabric to protect the finish, and there was a ton of tight fitting styrofoam holding everything together, with more of the stiffened laminated cardboard protecting the corners of the box from the inside. This box could have shot out of the shipping truck, completed two bounces on the interstate and been run over by a semi and the contents would have been flawless.

Third, I'm really impressed with the materials and the ease of assembly. Nice heavy pieces of actual wood, and those pieces that are made from pressboard are made from the very dense, heavy variety with nice laminate. We purchased the dark espresso finish, and its pretty much black with wood grain showing through, a little darker than we expected, but we are happy with it. Assembly instructions were clear, all necessary hardware was in the box, and it went together very easy with a phillips screwdriver.

Overall I'm very happy with this item, the fireplace looks great for an electric, and the furniture aspect meets exactly what we needed. Would definitely recommend.

Honest reviews on Fresno Electric Fireplace in Black

This entertainment center is such a great piece of furniture with the electric fireplace. It took approx. 1 hour to assemble, my daughter & her husband put it together & everything worked perfectly. It is a real nice piece of furniture and looks great. The only part that took some time is to take each piece out of the large box 2 pieces were very heavy. Once I put all the pieces in the living room it took little time to put together. I would highly recommend this entertainment center.

I love this fireplace but it was slightly damaged even though it was beautifully packaged. The chip is right in the center front of the unit. That, actually, is quite minor and I expect I can repair it with a bit of shoe polish.

What I wasn't expecting is that it is a bit noisy when the unit is turned on. I might have expected that when the heater is turned on, but it is also a little noisy when just the "mood" light is on for the electric fire.

I haven't used it yet to supplement the heat in our small room.

I also wasn't expecting to assemble it although it was easy enough to do.

I recently purchased the SUNHEAT Electronic Infrared Zone Heater. I bought this product for my father who sleeps in a reclining chair at night. He wanted a heater that would warm the air in the room and after using it for less than a day, he said the room felt more comfortable and it was easier for him to relax and sleep. The product works better than expected and it is quieter than I thought it would be. My only complaint, [if you want to call it a complaint], would be that the remote control buttons are difficult to use for someone who has limited strength in their fingers. I definitely would not let this influence my decision in buying another one of these heaters, but it is something to think about if the person using it has limited hand strength, such as someone who is handicapped or is elderly.

This Sunheat has a 3-year warranty if you check with others in the same price range you'll probably find a one year warranty that, in some cases, does not cover labor. It has a wood cabinet not metal or plastic and nice digital readout. And most important it works great! And will last for years not just one year. I feel Sunheat is not that well known compared to mass advertised brands but it is the best heater for the money. I trust it because I have oil heat in my home and I refuse to pay around $4.00 per gallon I heat using two infrared heaters and two radiator heaters in a mild climate in winter of 20 to about 50 degrees my house is about 1200 sq ft., Over oil heat I save a least $200 per month and I am nice and toasty warm. Their other heater has a 5 year warranty and you can't go wrong with that.

Best Deals on Thermal Wave by SUNHEAT Electronic Infrared Zone Heater with Remote

The only disappointment I have is that on the SUNHEAT website, they imply they are a US company, only the cabinet is made in the US. (at least that's something). The unit itself is from China. Looks nice and works well, I have no complaints.

Update: 4/17/2013 Unit has never been in a damp area, yet the cabinet is starting to delaminate on the top front edge. Also, on the rear where the intake filter screen is located the chassis was not drilled correctly for the assembly screws causing the sheet metal to be rippled. This keeps the screen from fitting correctly. Poor Chinese workmanship.

When old man winter sets in you can trust this little baby will take the chill out of the air. Ca not go wrong with this truste name on the market.

I just received this for Christmas, it's something I've wanted for a while. Ever since my tea kettle died of old age, I've been boiling water for tea with a regular sauce pan and what usually happens is I forget all about it and only remember after it has been boiling for a while. Also, I didn't like the long wait for hot water. I want instant gratification! And now I have it with this Zojirushi dispensing pot. It's perfect since I'm an avid tea drinker, consuming several pots of tea each day.

A long long time ago, I used to have the "air pot" style dispensing pot where you just press on the top and it pumps out water. This one is a much newer design and dispensing is handled electronically. What I like is the "safety" feature which was lacking in the old "air pot" styles. You have to press the "unlock" button before the "dispensing" button which prevents accidentally dispensing hot water. You can set this to keep water at 205°F, 195°F, or 175°F. You can also set it to give you hot water in 7 hours, but this is a feature I really don't need to use. I'm using the 195°F which seems to be a good middle ground for making black (requires hotter water) and green (requires lower temp water) teas. This is also handy for making instant noodles, oatmeal, hot chocolate. Also handy when needing hot water for a dish I'm cooking, or making chicken/beef broth for a dish I'm cooking. This is very convenient ... no more waiting for hot water! (This beats getting a replacement tea kettle because with a tea kettle I still have to wait for it to boil/whistle, and it usually whistles shortly after I've sat down and gotten comfortable.) This pot will automatically reboil when it feels the temp has dropped too much. The water level gauge is easy to read, the lid lifts up easily for refilling (also removes easily to make pouring water out and cleaning a cinch). Another nice little detail is a removable power cord. It makes me feel a bit "safer" being able to remove this before cleaning out the pot in the sink.

I am confident that this will last me a long time. My in-laws also have a Zojirushi water dispensing pot and it has never failed on them. And I know people who have other Zojirushi products and have had no problems with them. So I feel comfortable with this brand, and I may look into getting one of their rice cookers.

Oh, I have to mention one more nicety of this dispensing pot. The base will swivel around (think lazy suzan style), making it easy to rotate it without scratching your kitchen counter top.

The only thing I need to be careful about is where to put the dispensing pot since there is a steam vent on the top. I don't put it directly beneath any kitchen cabinets, just in case the steam might damage the cabinet over time.

ADDED 11/19/05:

I just wanted to mention that I have had this for 2 years and it is still working as well as it did when I first got it. I have used this pot everyday for the past 2 years. I refill it at least once a day in the summer, 2-4 times a day in the winter. I use it mainly for making tea (big tea drinkers in this house) and cooking. It's easy to clean. No staining on the inside; of course this would depend on your local water quality. Not bad at all considering the use I get out of this. I still highly recommend this pot.

I have a baby now. I have found this dispensing pot handy for quickly warming up bottles from the fridge... instant hot water to immerse bottle in. My screaming baby doesn't have to wait long for her milk. Perfect! The pot has also been useful when mixing cereal... mix cereal with some cold water, then a splash of the hot water to bring it up to a nice warm temp for her.

I drink a fair amount of tea, and so this 3 liter size water pot is perfect for myself. I typically only refill it once a day, at night before I go to bed. It has a 7 hour delay timer that I use so that I have hot water as soon as I get up.

I use the hottest water setting that maintains the temperature at 208 degrees F. It heats up relatively quickly if it's left at 195 degrees or at 175 degrees to save electricity, but I'm impatient and don't like to wait.

I also use it for hot chocolate, apple cider, ramen, you name it.

It is very easy to refill thanks to the removable cover and removable power cord. The cord attaches magnetically, which makes plugging and unplugging incredibly easy.

I do have to turn the pot around so the back is facing me when I open the cover and remove it to refill the water. If I don't, the steam hits me on the wrist when I open it, and since I keep it on the hottest setting, the steam is scalding.

There is a safety feature where you press the "unlock" button before the "dispense" button so it doesn't accidentally dispense hot water, but it hasn't been that important to me.

It's super easy to clean. I bought a 1-lb package of citric acid. I weigh out 30g, dissolve it in water, and throw it into a full pot. Then I press the button to put the pot on clean mode. It takes about an hour and a half Afterward, I dump the water and boil another pot of water to rinse it. I dump that, and the next pot of water doesn't taste like citric acid at all. There are cleaning instructions in the manual.

I clean it every few weeks, or whenever I feel like it. Our water is very hard, and even though I use filtered water, a layer of calcium will accumulate on the inside of the pot, but the cleaning takes that away without any problems.

The interior is Teflon coating, I believe, but as long as I don't scratch it, it's perfectly safe. It hasn't shown any wear or tear yet.

The outside is plastic and easy to clean even when it gets splatter from the nearby stove top.

I have had my pot for 16 months and it hasn't given me any problems. For tea lovers, I can't recommend this enough.

Okay, this is going to seem like a silly purchase to a lot of people. And before I seriously considered it, it did to me too. The only reservation for me was the price. Now that I have it, I think it is worth it.

I bought it a month or so ago (and got the $25 off if you spend $125 on housewares discount amazon usually runs). It's a great machine. There are two people here and we drink a lot of tea, all day long. I refill it at least once a day, and that's without using it for cooking much. People who don't make a lot of tea will probably still go through a pot a day if they use it several times for hot water for drinks or soups, and then maybe for a pot of water for pasta. It's great for things like pre-heating a thermos or tea pot, which can really help them stay hot longer. (Doing that the old way, with kettle-boiled water was a lot more time-consuming, and I might not bother.)

It's nice waking up to hot water using the 7 hour timer. It's also nice for people who drink green tea or oolong, as opposed to black tea, because it has different temperature settings.

By the way, I used a lot less hot water before I purchased this thing--but I used to wait a lot for the water I did use. This is my second Zojirushi product, and I think they're really well made (I also have a fuzzy logic rice cooker). I've learned that a well-designed, well-made product lasts much better, and gets used much more often, than a poorly designed one. I fully expect this will be the case with this machine.

Honest reviews on Zojirushi CD-LCC30 Micom 3.0-Liter Electric Dispensing Pot

After two years' of continuous use, interior coating is coming off. A few rusty spots have developed in the past 6 months. The company's website does not provide a replace container. I liked the Zojirushi brand but this one seems a disappointment.

I purchased the Zojirushi 3 liter dispensing pot, and it runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in my house. We drink tea constantly, and it is wonderful not to have to wait to boil water. The Zojirushi allows you to set the desired water temperature based on your needs (i.e. 175 for green/white teas, 195 for other teas, 205 for cooking). The unit is tall enough to fit even our tallest to-go cup under the dispensing spout.

It also has a "7 hour" delayed start so that it can be off during the night, but you wake up to hot water.

The only downside is that it doesn't appear to be insulated as well as it could be. For example, the outside of the unit is warmer than an insulated thermos-style container containing equally hot water. This suggests to me that it is not as well insulated, and therefore not as energy efficient as it could be.

I recommend it, and would buy another one in an instant if anything happened to this one.

right out of the box worked great. Heated a 34x34 garage in no time at all. only problem the propane tank I was using was frozen. Temp in the garage before the heater was -5 after it was 50.

This is a FANTASTIC heater but there are some things a new buyer should be aware of. It'll bring a 30x60x12 garage from 0 to 60 in about an hour and a half. However you really do need a 100 lb tank. You can get away with a 40 or 50 lb heating a smaller area on low otherwise the tanks will condense and shut off the gas flow to the heater. They are louder than you'd expect if you haven't used one of these before because of the blower fan. Think mini jet. I've also used the convection style heaters and depending on your needs these are both great. The convection style is much quieter but takes a fair bit longer to heat a large space and you won't get as even a heat in the room. For larger spaces or fast heat up the forced air heater is an awesome product.Mr. Heater MH125FAV 125,000-BTU Forced-Air Propane HeaterMr. Heater 80,000 BTU Propane Convection Heater #MH80CV

I'm in the process of insulating and paneling a 12x30 portable building to be used as a workshop. During the winter it get's a bit cold here. I got this hoping it would heat the building enough to work comfortably. I couldn't. Kept having to turn it off after every 15 minutes of run time and wait 45 minutes to an hour before needing it again. That's a lot of heat from a device that's slightly larger than ones thigh. It uses very little propane for a LOT of heat. I heartily recommend it.

This thing really works like a charm. The only bummer is the slight propane smell when used in a slightly enclosed place. Heats up a large space in minutes.

I can now change my uninviting work area in the northernmost portion of Michigan from a freezing cold refrigerator into a shirtsleeves comfortable shop. This heater does everything I'd hoped for.

This is a very efficient heater and easy to install. Quiet and delivers adequate heat for my 2 car garage. After years of using and filling propane bottles, this is a welcome relief, only wish I'd have bought one sooner.

This is a wonderful little heater. There is a high and a low and each one will oscillate as well. If you are looking to heat a room this is not the heater for you, but if you are just looking to sit down and read a book or browse the internet this this thing is awesome.

This rack was easy to put together. I would recommend that your logs are cut long enough to fit on the rack. Ours were cut to short and we had to use a peice of plywood on the bottom to support the logs. Good product. Hghly recommend.
