The enclosed instructions claim that the "Hot Spot" does not heat items, but maintains their temperature. This is only partially true: Very hot cups of liquid cool down to hot (probably because there is no lid), and very full cups will cool down even more. That said, the Salton hot plate "mostly" maintains beverage temperature. I enjoy my now hotter coffee, and I've noticed I don't have to drink as much coffee as I did without the hot plate because I'm not refilling a cup at room temperature.

NO THERMOSTAT

That's right, there is no thermostat, so safety is really up to you. If you lay something on top of this, if it accidentally turns over-whatever-it will stay at the same temperature and start to burn. Even without this important lack-of-safety feature, the hot plate's complete ignorance of its own temperature can result in a scalded taste when heating coffee with milk-especially when the cup is near empty. Perhaps this item is hard to find because of this thermostat issue; however, I have yet to locate a similar product that senses heat.

The Salton does an adequate to good job at keeping beverages hot. It comes with a plain white cup which could have easily been left out. There is a white power cord and a simple on/off switch-a small red light indicates that the power is on. Please note that this product ships from independent sellers; therefore, Amazon.com does not offfer free shipping (with an order of $25 or more). For a similar price, you can order a mug warmer with a ceramic base from Vermontcountrystore.com. Given the adequate but not excellent performance of the Salton Hot Spot, this product might be worth checking out, although it does not have a thermostat either.

I bought this item based on the reviews and after looking at all other similar items and their reviews. This has been a great for my work. I spend most of my day in front of a computer/at at desk (like most of us today) and many times I get completely into what I am doing and forget to drink my tea, which ends up getting cold before I finish it. Well, no more. My tea stays hot until I finish it.

It does have one minor deficiency; it does not have an automatic on/off switch, so you need to be careful placing it in an area where you are not going accidentally cover it with any pieces of paper in case you forget to turn it off. On the other hand, the benefit of that feature is that you can turn it on before you go to get your coffee/tea/hot chocolate/soup so by the time you get back to your desk, the plate is already warm.

Note; this item is not for heating up a cold drink (as, oddly, some people seem to think), but rather, it is to maintain the temperature of a hot drink. Finally, it does come with its own cup, but you can also use your own.

After researching the reviews of mug warmers on Amazon I bought the Salton "Hot Spot". Upon turning it on for the first time, there was a slight burning aroma. I then placed my huge tea mug on top, accidentally spilling a bit. The spilled tea sizzled and crackled on the mug warmer until it had boiled away! Needless to say, the Hot Spot did its job and kept my large mug of tea at a very warm (but not too hot) temperature. Highly recommended!

I like my coffee piping hot, this warming plate doesn't keep it piping hot, but does ok.

I did a test on it using a digital thermometer that was graduated in whole degrees (not tenths)

I made a cup of coffee in a Keurig automatic coffee maker into the ceramic mug that came with the unit. I did not heat the mug first....it was at room temperature when the coffee began pouring into it.

I preheated the warmer for 15 minutes prior to making my cup of coffee.

Room temperature was 72 deg F.

All temperature readings were taken with the temperature probe tip located at the mid-point of the remaining coffee in the mug.

1. As soon as the coffee was made the temperature was 155 deg F.

2. The mug was then immediately placed on the PREHEATED warmer without having taken a sip of coffee.

3. 15 minutes after setting the mug on the preheated warmer, the temperature was 130 deg F. (I had still NOT taken a drink of coffee nor had the cup been removed from the warmer)

4. 20 minutes after setting the mug on the preheated warmer, the temperature was 125 deg F. (I had still NOT taken a drink of coffee nor had the cup been removed from the warmer)

5. I then periodically took a sip of coffee over the next 60 minutes. The mid level coffee temperature continued to fall until it stabilized at 110 deg F.

6. With 20% of the cup left with coffee, the temperature remained steady at 110 deg F. for 3 hours.

As a reference: I did the same test, however, the warmer was NOT used:

1. Removed from Keurig coffee maker the temperature of the coffee was: 155 deg F. (Room temperature was: 72 deg F.)

2. 15 mins later the coffee temperature was 122 deg F.

3. 20 mins later the coffee temperature was 102 deg F.

I like the cup warmer and recommend it, but, for me, I wish it could keep my coffee around 150 deg F.

I have purchased SEVERAL other brands of mug warmers, trying to find one that actually lives up to what the manufacturer claims. This one actually does! It keeps my coffee warm for literally hours (since I'm one to get busy at work and forget my morning coffee sitting on the desk, it will still be hot at lunch time). I would never purchase any other brand, and would tell others the same who ask me. This product is the only one to try. Trust me...I've tried the others.

I love my new fireplace entertainment center. It came in two separate boxes, one was the wood and the other the fireplace heater insert. The cherry wood is beautiful, but is a bit dark. When we first assembled it, two of my sons did it within 45 minutes. When done, the front doors didn't fit right. The left front door gapped and the right side didn't fit right at all. Cooperation from the manufacturer was not very good. The manufacturer did not call back when they said they would and I had to keep calling and getting the run around. Also, they wanted me to e-mail them a picture for someone in another department to decide what to do about helping me and I didn't have the camera or the ability to e-mail them a picture. Although the manufacturer had poor service, the seller was great! After I notified the seller of the problem, they immediately sent a replacement unit and that fixed everything. We've been enjoying the unit ever sense. My son seems to think one of the problems with the doors fitting correctly is to make sure the screws are the exact manufacture ones specified to go on the doors and to make sure you get the precise line up for the door and the spot to screw it in at. Anyone having the same problem, should check this. The fireplace entertainment looks so beautiful and makes the room feel so inviting and is nice and warm.

I love this a/c unit for my bedroom works like a charm and reasonably quiet if you keep all the filters cleaned. My only question is who designed the exhaust hose set up? It is absolutley ridiculous. I've gone through about $20 of duck tape just trying to keep the stupid exhaust hose in the plastic piece. Why the engineers took a lunch break on this part of the unit is just beyond me. I finally just superglued the darn pieces together. Otherwise, great machine but for the money they really dropped the ball on the exhaust hose set up.

We purchased this item based partly on the reviews here. We paid extra for overnight delivery. The item arrived ok and we unboxed and plugged it in. This unit initialized correctly and then the cold air came out. Ahhh. This is going to be just what we need. It ran for 15 seconds and then the compressor shut down. The fan kept running. We tried it different locations thinking it might be a power problem. It is not. We called Product Support only to sit on hold with no one to answer the phone.

It may well be that this is a good product but you roll the dice if you get one of the good ones.

We ordered this on Amazon Prime and paid for next day delivery. That all went fine. We were going to ask for a replacement but then found out that to get a replacement takes 3 to 5 weeks. Huh? What? You can get me the product in 1 day but it takes 5 weeks to replace it?

What's up with that?

I will state a couple of positives first. It cools fast and it's relatively quiet. There you go. Now worst to first. Set-up with the window adapter, exhaust tube and connecting it to the back of the unit took me an hour! I'm no Joe-contractor, but I've taken apart and put together enough things in my life to know that this is a total duct-tape job at all three points. Tomorrow I have to go to the hardware store to get some clamps that might work. It's ridiculous that the manufacturer of this machine doesn't spend a few extra cents per unit to include a few easy connectors. Get this the owner's manual actually says "duct tape may be required" for the window installation. Classy, huh? Okay, so knowing that I would have never purchased this. Next, the "swing" function designed to circulate the air on my unit is useless because if I employ it, there's a slow ratcheting sound as the louvers raise which lasts about five seconds and sounds three times louder than the unit at full compressor. This wouldn't be so bad, except that there is no left to right adjustment for air direction. Another design flaw is the cheap filter. It doesn't readily show ambient temp, you have to plow through the remote control to find the function. This is far and away the worst product I've ever purchased on Amazon. Why not return it? You put it all back together and haul it back to the UPS store up and down three flights of stairs in 100 degree heat after you just spent the most frustrating hour in recent memory and it's just not worth the hassle. Plus, I only need it a few weeks a year. Instead I would highly recommend the LG at this BTU. I had an LG and it was snap, snap, done in five minutes. I'll be selling this one after the heat is gone and getting another LG. Don't buy this product. I would never buy anything with this brand name. Sorry folks at Koldfront your product, at this price is a rip off. BTW if you're one of the people pulling your hair out trying to connect the hose, you can buy clamps similar to those you use on a dryer exhaust. Also, if using tape, I would suggest a high grade high temp pvc tape. Slightly less unsightly seals better and does not break down as quickly as duct tape. Just a couple suggestions to save you some headaches because you will have some.

We purchased this unit for our server room and it should provide plenty of cooling; however, it does not. We replaced a 12,000 BTU LG Unit after it died and hoped that this unit would be as good. It is not.

Our setup:

5" Ducting from the back of the unit to the ceiling to vent out the heat

Powered water pump unit to carry the condensation outside the building

The unit is sitting in front of our 42U Server Rack

Problems:

The EXHAUST Port on the back only sticks out 1/2" making it nearly impossible to hold the exhaust hose.

* We had to heavily duct tape the exhaust host and tie it up to keep it in place

* Warm air still leaks out

The Cold Output is minimal. The air is cold but does not travel very far.

* The 12k BTU LG worked well and kept the room cool

We are going to get rid of it and replace it with a split duct unit.

Sadly, my fireplace was shipped without a piece, the bracket to hold the glass panel in. The panel still fits snug, and until I get the piece from Customer Service, it seems to stay in place fine anyway. The flame effect is surprisingly,very good. I did not expect it to be as life-like as it turns out. The heater is very quiet, and actually warms both my living room and dining room, an area approximately 30 x 15, to a comfortable degree. I agree with the poster above that a separate setting for the thermostat and flame would have been great. Also, since it is RF, it doesn't work with my Harmony One remote, but the remote is small and only has an "on" and an "off" button. One strange thing, I looked on the Dimplex site, and can not find this model. Even if it was a closeout, shouldn't they still list the model?

I received this last evening. It arrived in two large boxes and required assembly. It is the assembly instructions that prevent me from giving the fireplace 5 stars. While the mantle/hearth was relatively intuitive, the fireplace connections to the hearth were separate and not as simple as they could have been. There is little good instruction regarding the installation of the glass front (which was pristine upon arrival).

Now to the good: Wow! The fireplace, both wood and fake fire are top quality when compared to others I've seen in big box retailers and it was considerably less money.

The remote turns on and off the unit only which makes good sense to me. The only reason I would have to adjust the thermostat would be if I were to move the fireplace to a different room. The thermostat is easily adjustable and the flame and heat can be controlled separately. The noise made from the unit is less than the space heater I'd been using in the basement and is certainly far more attractive.

I'm very pleased with the quality, fit, finish and look of this unit and I expect to enjoy it for years to come.

UPDATE: I've had this heater for almost two years now (12/12)and while I will admit that the heater has gotten a bit noisier, it's still more quiet than most other free-standing heaters. The flame and all other components are as good as the day I put it together. It heats well and the flames are as vibrant as ever.

Still Recommended!

I bought this to replace an original bathroom wall heater that was over 50 years old. That one had coils and the surface would get real hot. If you left a towel in front of it for awhile, I think it would ignite. The new version has a fan and is much safer. The surface doesn't get very hot and the fan is quiet. I just purchased another one to replace the heater in my other bathroom.

My old wall heater from the 1970's finally burned out. Because that model wasn't available anymore i want with something that looked similar, the Cadet heater. It was very easy to install and took only about an hour from box to turning it on. And it works perfect, heating up the room quickly. It doesn't get as hot as my old heater but i can understand why. The old heater seemed too much of a fire hazard. This new heater covers the heating units and blows the hot air out. Works great.

Despite being made in the USA (its not, its made in Canada) this is a mediocre item. I replaced the last one (A Cadet) which only lasted about six years. The original (no longer made) lasted thirty years.

The heat produced is minimal for a bathroom. This is not a particularly good heater... The only real advantage is that it fits into (with some pushing, etc.) the orginal wall "can." If you are like me and not particularly handy this is the only way to go. If you are handy enough to put in a new heater, ceiling or wall etc.. loose this one. Its just not that good a heater nor is the quality there.

The "protective coating" is some tape all over the chrome parts and had to be picked away sliver, by sliver a pain in the neck to say the least.

If you do buy one avoid buying from Gradysonline.com I made that mistake. It took eleven days to get the heater. I have amazon direct which offered free two day shipping but the web site said that Amazon was out of the product. The only communication from Grady's was a UPS tracking EMAIL two days ago. The tracking information indicated it left the seller's facility yesterday near my home!!! Eleven days is ridiculous without some communication. Wish I had just gone to the local ACE hardware to buy this thing its been a cold week.

Three stars, only because it is the "only game in town" for a direct replacement. Otherwise, there are much better heaters and stay away from Grady's. I am really surprised that Amazon (typically excellent customer service) allows this company to sell on the Amazon web site. Well, three stars is actually quite generous considering the overall product and sales...

The product description says "On-demand heat with thermostat control". It has a switch for high and low heat but no thermostat other than according to the manual if it overheats it will turn the heater off and wont come back one without being reset by switching off and on again. So this was disappointing and the product description should really be revised.

When I first turned it on it made a clunk clunk noise so I turned it off and took off the back panel and found the thing that rotates had fallen out of one of it's mounts. It was easy to put back in the mount and after that it works fine and quiet.

It's nice and small so can be moved from room to room.

Flames look pretty good and heater also seems effective for a small room.

This is a great little heater and the price is right. I use it with a programmable thermostatic plug and have it programmed to turn on about an hour before I get up, so my living room is nice and toasty when I sit down to have my coffee and read the paper, without having to heat the entire house that early. I bought the Dimplex because I all ready own a larger model, that is five years old,and has worked great from the start. It was $99.00 back then. So in the mean time I bought a small Duraflame model.Big dissappointment. Sounded like a hair dryer when you turned on the heat and the flame motor by itself was noisy. I immediately wanted the quiet flame and heater of a Dimplex model.

This Dimplex compact model is a good size for this 130 year old farmhouse.I all ready tested the flame and heat, no noise at all.So now I have two Dimplex models. Both are centerpieces, one for the living room and one for the family room.

Ordered this stove, came quickly and were very happy with it. It was just what we wanted for our RV......a gentle heat with a great "real" fire effect for those cold nights. Sadly, after a month, the light quit on us. I asked Amazon for another bulb but they said they couldn't do that, only exchange the stove. So thats what we did. Another came quickly and all was perfect again. Until, after 2 months the blower motor quit on us! Very unhappy with the product now. Amazon was very generous with us and refunded about 80% of my money since it was past a month's guarantee, I so wish this stove was better made! It was perfect for so short a time!! I was skeptical about this heater when I bought it. Usually really good heaters have to look more utilitarian, industrial and not so compactly designed. This little heater is a powerhouse. I used it on low for the first few weeks I had it; barely raised the electric bill two dollars. The cat sits right at the vent; I suppose missing the fireplace at our last house. Then I discovered the high button, flipped that and WHOA doggie, more like a furnace than a space heater. I enjoy this heater so much, I hesitate to mention a drawback, but for those of you with flexibility issues, the on/off/high/low buttons are located waa-ay down at the bottom on the right side. It's very sturdy, self-contained, child safe [nothing to open, nothing loose], cat/dog safe QUIET heater. I love it!

This is a pretty good, little, electric heater. It's in an all-metal case. It has a non-detented thermostat. The detented power knob (Off, Fan only, I. (less power), II., III. (more power)) works much like opening a prescription pill bottle. The plastic, hinged handle is nice, too. I tested the tip over feature while moving it on the floor, and it works well! The whole unit shuts off if it's even a little out of plumb.

"Sparky," as I named him, gets pretty hot. The fan blows at what I'll call a slow to medium rate--sufficient to circulate the air and quite quiet. The thermostat works well, too.

Bought this heater at my local hardware store before reading these reviews. Sounds like they either work or they don't. My didn't. I brought it home, took it out to the garage (about 35º F out there today), plugged it in and waited about an hour to see if it would warm up. Despite being on the highest setting and having the thermostat on it cranked, the heater barely put out any heat. It was level and stable, but the only heat I could feel from it was from about two inches away, and that felt like a hair dryer on the lowest setting (and that's being generous).

I returned it. I'm sure some of these heaters really get the job done, but I can't imagine that mine was functioning properly, and it sounds like a common problem. Light came on, fan whirred away (a little) but barely any heat came out. My halogen work light put out more heat at three feet away. Find another heater.

I took a chance on this heater because of the January 2010 review that said it had no toxic fumes. But the one I just received (in September 2012) was so smelly, without even being plugged in and heating up, that I quickly repacked it and returned it. (Since the return was not because of damage or any error by Amazon, return shipping costs of $10.99 were deducted from my refund.)

If you could bottle this heater's odors you might label it "Eau de Service Station". The rubbery cord smelled especially strong to me, like new tires. These are smells that I know from experience never air out or burn off.

This is sad, especially if the product has changed that much since 2010. Many people who buy an all-metal heater are trying to avoid inhaling toxic fumes and have serious health reasons for doing so.

I've been getting by with Markel 198TE all-metal portable heaters, which used to have minimum smell, but in recent years the new ones are smellier and break down quickly. In desperation I just keep getting them replaced on warranty through a local store. And searching for something better.

I was so happy with this heater, at first.

It had good heat output, was incredibly quiet, and produced no chemical odor after a couple hours of use.

However, within two weeks, it stopped working. Even the fan won't come on. The only sign of life is the indicator light.

Sigh.
