Dyson advertises that this fan moves 5 gallons per second of air. That translates to 40 cubic feet per minute. This is how fans are typically specified. But Dyson won't use those units of measurement, because that would allow you to make the comparison yourself and realize just what a lousy air mover this fan is.

To put this into perspective, a small clip-on 6" fan can move 190 cubic feet per minute. That little fan costs about $20.

Dyson achieves this deception through props typically streamers placed around the edge of the fan in store displays and ads. Sure, the air does move quickly from the edge of the fan, just as fast as it moves from conventional fans. However, this is only a thin ring of air movement in the case of the Dyson fans versus a full circle of air movement from a conventional fan. This helps to explain the difference in air moving performance.

Conventional fans are also quieter. Again, that little 6" clip-on is only 37 decibels. The Dyson is 50 decibels.

The Dyson fan is beautiful and safe. But as a fan, it is loud, has terrible air flow, and is preposterously overpriced other than as a work of art.

Better to buy a fan that works and some artwork that isn't masquerading as a fan.

It lives up to all the cool blade-less design and all, but I was very surprised over that I payed so much money for some cleverly shaped plastic. For whatever reason I expected the base to be in brushed aluminum and maybe even part of the ring. But no, sadly everything is plastic. Using a heavier metal would have also helped with cutting down the noise a bit which also was a good bit more than I had expected. I have regular fans that do not sound as much as this thing. If you like cool design and know before hand that a) it is plastic all the way and b) it makes some noise, I am sure you will be happy.

Dyson Air Multiplier? table fan 10" white

I,m a product and design engineer by trade , and have years of experience , We live on Cape Cod and

do not use air conditioning during the summer, when its hot we use table fans and window fans and have

about 4 types that we use around the house to keep cool on the hot days and nights.

When I saw the Dyson 10" ring fan on a show room floor it seemed to move the air well , and did not seem noisy.

I then purchased the product and when I received it and and took it out of the box it moved the air well but

was very noisy on low speed and has a constant "loud" 500HZ tone that everyone in the house can hear , even in

rooms at the far end of the house on a quite day or night . This 500 hz Noise is not something you get used to and

compared to some of our other bladed fans running on slow , the Dyson Ring fan is very noisy .

Until Dyson fixes this problem , the product will not serve much purpose as we have our's switched

off do to the noise , it's now acting as a $300 dust collector , which it seems to do very well.

I can only say that for the price I expected more from Dyson , I would not recommend this product to anyone, do not buy

this product unless you have a house or building with a lot of background noise like in a city , In fact maybe

Dysons lab is in a noisy building in down town London . I give it a very Bad rating due to the Noise it makes.

Honest reviews on Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan, 12 Inches, Silver

A Haier ESA412J 12000-BTU Room Air Conditioner Energy Star with Remote which is a full 12,000 BTU air conditioner with a remote control costs less than this dyson air multiplier. So from a cost standpoint, this product is very overpriced.

From a volume of air moved standpoint, this product is also wholey deficient as it moves less air than a regular fan, the reason? this air multiplier uses a very small fan that is noisy to push air through a small ring shaped nozzle.

I'm all for the entrepeneur inventor making money and coming up with innovative products but this is just an example of a Brit with a big marketing team recycling old ideas from the 1960s and using them to dump overpriced products into the American market and taking Americans for fools. I don't give many 1 star reviews but here is one. This product should be illegal, it's akin to selling snake oil as a cure for cancer.

PROS:

it's a good conversation piece

on initial impact, it looks pretty (until you look closely)

CONS:

Price (costs as much as a full true air conditioning unit)

Very underpowered (it really doesn't move much air which is what a fan, ahem air multiplier, should do well)

Space (takes up as much space as a full size fan)

Common Financial Sense (when your friends figure out how much you paid for it and what $300 would buy, they'll think less of you)

Cleaning Difficulty (the outside is easy to clean but dust will get inside the fan and cleaning that appears to be a mess, get a bottle of compressed air)

No remote control (c'mon at this price, I should have a full remote control)

Mostly plastic construction (at this price we should be seeing polished aluminium or stainless steel)

Noisy (you'd think that this would be quieter than a regular fan but it's not)

It says it's less dangerous but most fans come with grilles so unless your regular fan has no grille, it's not an issue

I dont think dyson has ever invented anything as their sales pitches has led people to believe. They are just old ideas hyped up for the consumer. They are in fact marketing geniuses! But to have a fan at this price that is entirely plastic?? No thanks! Its not even powerful. I just have to sit here with my ever so old fan and listen to it chop through the air...CHOP, CHOP......Better yet, get a tower fan, strong, quiet and inexpensive. You can also buy a window AC unit, actually 2 of them with money to spare. E bay has air multiplier fans starting at 120 shipped from China, that just goes to show you how cheap they really are. Shame on you dyson!
