By placing the fan near a wall and around 20' away, the air volume and dispersion is impressive. It really beats an oscillating fan given that the airflow is constant. We own another oscillating tower-style fan, and the Vornado blows it away! We opted for the smaller Vornado unit, and can't see any need for the larger one given this unit's performance. On the high setting the noise level is substantial, but this is only used to quickly ventilate the area before reducing the speed. Medium is much quieter and low is nearly silent. The remote is nice looking, fits well in the hand, and the signal is strong enough to reach the receiver at approximately 20'. The Vornado tower circulator is a solid design that really works well.

Update 7/7/2011 Still loving this fan, will be purchasing another soon.

Update 8/26/11 Still waiting for my other (old) fans to die to justify ordering more of these Vornado towers. Ours is still working great and is in use 10-12 hours daily.

-I was a bit nervous on the purchase of this fan when reading how some people said it makes a noise "that sounds like ball bearings going out" ... I will admit I was a bit sold simply on the looks. Ehh, I'm a visual man. Anyhow, upon receipt of the package, I put it together and quickly noticed this noise. Saddened initially, but without losing hope I pushed on it, shook it a little, then found myself a screw driver. Yes. Tightened every screw I could find on it. (about 6-8) and it hasn't made the noise again. I would say each screw was maybe a quarter to a half a turn loose. I think this is what was wrong with the other fans people complained about.

-Secondly, some said the lowest setting was hardly useful..well my friend I tell you this; I can stand on the other side of the room probably 20ft and the breeze is very apparent..oh well. Some people are very hard to please. The highest setting is comparable to your typical oscillating fan on high as far as noise, but I feel like this move more air. And the middle setting is what you would expect.. somewhere between silent and loud.

-And I think the remote is useless. Get up and turn it to the setting you want, probably burn a calorie or two doing so. :)

Great purchase and I would buy it again!

After a week or so of owning this thing I had to return it. The aesthetic is nice, but thats about it. The fan has 3 speeds: Jet engine, Turbo, and Aquarium pump. Let me explain. The highest speed is ridiculously loud and I can't imagine being suitable for any application other than a garage or workshop. The medium setting isn't too bad and pushes a decent amount of air, but still rather noisy for a normal quiet environment. Then the lowest speed is a joke. Rather than hearing air noise, you hear the drone/hum of a seemingly underpowered electric motor. And it kind of buzzes too on the lowest setting. It hardly pushes any air at all either so I don't know why that was even a consideration as a speed. So on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the fastest, I'd say the three speeds you get here are a 10, 7, and 1. There just isn't any balance.

I ended up purchasing the Honeywell QuietSet HY-108. I LOVE this thing. It has 8 speeds so you can get it just right. And they are all very quiet too, except for the air noise that you would expect on the higher settings. And it oscillates, which I like even better than Vornado's concept of a stationary fan with air shooting out in all directions.

Well, I just wrote a review of a fan. Now its time to go evaluate where I am at with my life.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat fan!! The ONLY thing that gets a big minus is the so-called magnet in the remote control. It BARELY does anything at all. Otherwise the entire fan is awesome.

I was hesitant to buy this product after reading so many reviews about the humming sound on the lowest setting. Then I saw one that suggested tightening the screws. So I bought it, and as it turned out mine made a pretty annoying humming sound on the lowest setting (the hum was louder than the fan noise). I was disappointed. Then I pressed down gently on the unit with my hands, and the sound disappeared. So I determined that the hum sound had to do with external factors, probably vibrations caused by all the screws not being tight enough (like the other reviewer said). So I got my screwdriver, tightened all the screw, and BAM hum sound gone. It is basically silent on the lowest setting now, and works perfectly.
